Renan Barao holds onto belt at UFC on Fuel 7

Renan Barao held onto the UFC interim bantamweight championship belt with a fourth-round arm-triangle submission win over Michael McDonald at UFC on Fuel 7 over the weekend. At 30-1, Barao hasn't lost since 2005. He won the interim title with a win over Urijah Faber over the summer when an injury sidelined champion Dominick Cruz.

The UFC is hoping for Barao to fight Cruz this summer, as long as Cruz's leg is healed from surgeries on his knee.

In other main card fights, Cub Swanson took a decision win over Dustin Poirier, Jimi Manuwa won by TKO after Cyrille Diabbate's calf was injured, and Gunnar Nelson and James Te'Huna won decisions.

UFC's Dan Hardy plans future training sessions with St-Pierre, targets spring return

After a four-fight skid that had him thinking about retirement, Dan Hardy's evolution is continuing in the midst of a two-fight resurgence.

The former UFC welterweight title challenger is coming off a stint at Montreal's Tristar Gym to help champion and former nemesis Georges St-Pierre prepare for common opponent Carlos Condit.

And recently, the Brit revealed he is planning to train in the future with St-Pierre and the Tristar crew.

Rashad Evans Talks About Regaining His Love For Fighting Before His UFC 156 Loss

UFC 145: Jones v Evans - Open Workouts

UFC President Dana White was clearly unhappy with the way the co-headliner played out at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar, and he made a rather cryptic statement about former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans shortly after the event. Evans lost an uneventful bout with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and, at the post-fight press conference, White said…

Michael Bisping, Vitor Belfort have heated staredown during UFC on FX 7 press conference (VIDEO)

Vitor Belfort and Michael Bisping stared off at the end of a press conference in Sao Paolo on Thursday. A simple staredown happens all the time in the UFC, but this one nearly came to blows.

I've never understood this kind of grandstanding. They will have their chance to put their hands on each other in two short days, as the main event of UFC of FX 7. For Bisping, it's a chance to get a step closer to the UFC middleweight title shot that has long eluded him. Why not wait and use all that aggression in the cage?

Of the fracas, Bisping responded with, "HE STARTED IT."

Clay Guida has a high school wrestling meet to coach before fighting at UFC on Fox 6

CHICAGO -- Clay Guida will take on Hatsu Hioki on Saturday's UFC on Fox 6 card. It will mark Guida's first fight at featherweight, but before the bout and weigh-ins, he has another match on his mind.

Montini Catholic's wrestling team will face the Oak Park River Forest Huskies, and Guida will be matside to coach. He wrestled in high school and was part of a junior college national championship team at Harper College in suburban Chicago.

"I got a big wrestling meet tonight with the team I help coach, Montini Catholic at Oak Park-River Forest. We're no. 1, going for our sixth-straight state title. I believe they're no. 1 ranked in 3A, no. 2 in the state. Two top-10 teams in the nation."

Guida's longtime wrestling coach, Izzy Martinez, coaches at Montini, and he's brought fighters like Guida in to help his team. Guida's fight taking place in his hometown of Chicago days after Montini's biggest dual meet is lucky scheduling because it allows Guida to be at the meet. Working with the high school wrestlers gives Guida inspiration.

"It's a huge part of my training. These kids motivate me," Guida said during open workouts.

Guida says this fight is a new start for him. He was criticized by UFC president Dana White and fans for the loss to Gray Maynard for a safe fight strategy. Guida says that fight is behind him.

"You're going to see a more energetic, revamped Clay Guida. Educated fight fans see the strides I have made. I believe I'm one of the most improved lightweights, and soon to be featherweights, in the UFC. You see my striking. I outstruck Gray, I outgrappled Gray. I beat him everywhere except on the judges' scorecards. I'm beyond that now. It was a learning experience, and Hatsu Hioki is going to pay for it."

But before he gets in the cage with Hioki, it's the Montini Broncos' turn to perform, and Guida will be there coaching them on.

Jon Jones? football dilemma ? big brother or little brother?

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones comes from a family of elite athletes. His older brother Arthur is a defensive end for the Baltimore Ravens, and his younger brother Chandler is a defensive end for the New England Patriots. Normally, that doesn't cause many dilemmas within the family. The Patriots and Ravens are in different divisions in the AFC and don't always play each other during the season.

On Sunday, things are different. The two will play each other for a spot in the Super Bowl. Jon, the middle child, is really stuck in the middle here. So who is he cheering for?

Sorry, Chandler. But really, the Jones family can't lose. A trip to New Orleans for the Super Bowl to support either Chandler or Arthur is in the offing, and in April, a trip to Newark to see Jon fight Chael Sonnen.

Watch Dana White pranking Lorenzo Fertitta and other behind the scenes action from UFC 155

Dana White's latest video blog shows that while he may be the president of a multimillion dollar business, he's also still an 11-year-old kid who can't help himself from pranking UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta. White fills the pockets of Fertitta's suit coat with grapes and cheese, and hopes Fertitta will explode. Watch to see if he does.

Other things to watch out for from behind the scenes at UFC 155:

-- Junior dos Santos staring in the mirror and psyching himself up for his bout with Cain Velasquez.

-- A beat-up Joe Lauzon watching replays of his fight.

-- Seeing emotions pour out of Velasquez after he won the UFC heavyweight championship bout again.

-- As dos Santos' swollen face is worked on, fans begin to chant his name. Despite being in obvious pain, he takes the ice off of his face to wave to his fans.

Ronda Rousey is not impressed with Georges St-Pierre?s fighting style

In six fights, UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has ended every fight in the first round. Her go-to armbar submission means her fights are predictable, but they're rarely boring.

But as for fighters she finds exciting? Don't put welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre on her list. Rousey called him boring last year, and confirmed what she said.

"I respect Georges St. Pierre as a businessman and an athlete," Rousey said to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I don't have anything against him personally. But he's not the kind of fighter I like watching."

"He fights to win matches. He doesn't fight to defeat his opponents. I lost a lot of judo matches because of points fighters. It was extremely frustrating for me. And when I see that same style being played out in a different sport, it brings out the same reaction in me."

The last time GSP didn't have a fight go to the judges was when he won by TKO over B.J. Penn in 2009. Rousey is hardly the first person to criticized GSP's strategic style, but this is from a fellow champion who has the standing to say what she likes. It gives the criticism even more weight.

Vitor Belfort did not fail UFC on FX 7 drug test, says UFC President Dana White

UFC_on_FX_7_poster_7.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"There was an irregular test. Something was wrong. Whenever something wrong happens, or weird, [the samples] get retested and, usually, it's not a good thing. It f***ing was not Vitor Belfort. Yet, right now I bet if you talked to 100 people, 100 people will tell you that Vitor Belfort failed his drug test in Brazil. That's bulls***... I do know the results. They'll be out Monday."

-Dana White comments on rumors surrounding a failed drug test at UFC on FX 7 after the UFC 156 post-fight press conference (via MMAWeekly.com).

Penick's Analysis: The results of the UFC on FX 7 drug tests will be back on Monday, and the rumor was that it was Belfort who had tested positive for something. Another rumor suggested he was on TRT for the event, but it wasn't known whether he had gotten approval for it. Regardless, White has shot down those rumors, and we'll find out on Monday just which fighter from the card had an issue. For now, White is adamant that it wasn't Belfort, and it wouldn't make sense to deny it as vociferously as he did on Saturday night if Belfort was the failed test in question.

HANSEN: My top 10 UFC fighters in every division

Rich_Hansen_staff_pic_wide_6.jpg

By Rich Hansen, MMA Torch Columnist

The UFC released their first set of official media rankings today, and as a whole they didn't entirely embarrass themselves. Sure, some of the individual voters made absolute fools of the sport, the UFC, and themselves, but the more voters you have the more normalization you get, covering up most cases individual incompetence.

The UFC put a few ridiculous constraints in place. First, fighters are only eligible at the weight class their NEXT contracted fight is scheduled to be. Meaning, Chael Sonnen is a light heavyweight, despite not having fought there since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Inactivity is NOT to be taken into consideration, so even though Shane Carwin hasn't won a fight since I was age nine, he has to be considered.

It really is slick what the UFC is doing here. They're using independent media (no Anik, Helwani, Goldberg, Junkie, etc), to vote on ONLY UFC fighters. Meaning, ostensibly independent media members are being used as promotional tools for the UFC. And then the UFC can use these rankings as a way of shoehorning fighters from other promotions out of the consciousness? Michael Chandler? Never heard of him.

And in forcing the voters to disregard fighters coming off of long layoffs (again, Shane Carwin hasn't won a fight in THREE YEARS), when said fighter returns (for anonymity sake, let's just call him Fighter X, or better yet Shane Carwin) from said hypothetical layoff, they can bill him as a returning top-10 fighter.

So, reservations aside, and since my opinion is worth exactly squat, here's how I would have voted.

HEAVYWEIGHT

Champ Cain Velasquez
1 Daniel Cormier
2 Junior dos Santos
3 Fabrico Werdum
4 Antonio Silva
5 Frank Mir
6 Alistair Overeem
7 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
8 Roy Nelson
9 Stefan Struve
10 Gabriel Gonzaga

My rationale: I think Heavyweight is pretty straight forward from Champ through six. Nog, Nelson, and Struve are interchangeable, but even though Nelson's KO happened almost 3 years ago, and the statue of limitations of that win has long since passed, it makes for a good tie-breaker amongst two evenly ranked fighters. As for Cormier ahead of dos Santos, I think Cormier and Velasquez are clones, and since one of the closed just decimated JDS, there ya go.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT

Champ Jon Jones
1 Dan Henderson
2 Lyoto Machida
3 Alexander Gustafsson
4 Chael Sonnen
5 Rashad Evans
6 Phil Davis
7 Glover Teixeira
8 Mauricio Rua
9 Ryan Bader
10 Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

My rationale: Look, I was awake on Saturday night, I saw Evans look bored, unmotivated, and disinterested. I know he lost to Nogueira. But you tell me right now; if Nog and Evans were to fight five times in a row over the next year or so, who wins the majority, and who is favored more often than not? Rashad Evans, that's who. Evans is a former champ with some huge UFC pelts on his wall. Nogueira got a gift win over Jason Brilz, and lost to Bader and Davis. One ugly win does not a UFC resume make. As for the rest of the division, Hendo and Machida are as 1A and 1B as it gets. We'll break that tie in three weeks. Unless Henderson tore an ACL, lacerated a kidney, lost an arm, has third degree burns on his face and chest, and just hasn't bothered to tell Dana yet.

MIDDLEWEIGHT

Champ Anderson Silva
1 Vitor Belfort
2 Chris Weidman
3 Yushin Okami
4 Luke Rockhold
5 Ronaldo Souza
6 Michael Bisping
7 Costa Phillipou
8 Tim Boetsch
9 Hector Lombard
10 Mark Munoz

My rationale: I think Weidman is just as good as Belfort, but Belfort has more big wins. Weidman has Munoz and Maia, that's it. Weidman is getting his shot at Anderson Silva, or so it seems. And if he wins, he's #1 with a bullet. I know Okami beat Boetsch, and the statute of limitations on that fight is still in play. But you can't ONLY use past W/L to rank fighters. It's impossible. I think Okami beats Boetsch 8 out of 10 times, and by definition there has to be SOME subjectivity in this exercise.

WELTERWEIGHT

Champ Georges St-Pierre
1 Johny Hendricks
2 Carolos Condit
3 Demian Maia
4 Rory MacDonald
5 Martin Kampmann
6 Jake Ellenberger
7 Jon Fitch
8 Nick Diaz
9 Josh Koscheck
10 Mike Pyle

My rationale: Diaz at 8? Yup. Who's he beaten? Thank you, I win. Now, if he beats GSP, he's the best in the world, and he finally has a signature win. Doesn't make me wrong putting him at 8, though. Other than that, this list was pretty easy for me to compile, Demian Maia being the wildcard now.

LIGHTWEIGHT

Champ Ben Henderson
1 Anthony Pettis
2 Gray Maynard
3 Gilbert Melendez
4 Nathan Diaz
5 TJ Grant
6 Rafael dos Anjos
7 Donald Cerrone
8 Jim Miller
9 Khabib Nurmagomedov
10 Pat Healy

My rationale: Honestly, I think TJ Grant beats Nate Diaz in a fight. But slaughtering Miller and Cerrone outweighs impressive victories over Wiman and Dunham. If they make Grant vs. Diaz as they should, we'll know soon enough. I think Gray Maynard is criminally underrated, and I thought about putting him ahead of Pettis. Couldn't go that far, but since I think he's a better fighter than Gilbert Melendez, I ranked him as such.

FEATHERWEIGHT

Champ Jose Aldo
1 Ricardo Lamas
2 Chad Mendes
3 Frankie Edgar
4 Chan Sung Jung
5 Dennis Siver
6 Cub Swanson
7 Clay Guida
8 Dustin Poirier
9 Nik Lentz
10 Hatsu Hioki

My rationale: Frankie Edgar is obviously ranked this highly not because he's 0-1 at featherweight but because 1.) he was damned impressive against the best featherweight in the world and B.) his impressive resume at lightweight carries over. Other than that, I had no problems putting this one together until the bottom three. Pat Curran wipes the mat with the bottom half of this top-10.

BANTAMWEIGHT

Champ Dominick Cruz
1 Renan Barao
2 Michael McDonald
3 Urijah Faber
4 Eddie Wineland
5 Rafael Assuncao
6 Scott Jorgensen
7 Brad Pickett
8 Brian Bowles
9 Francisco Rivera
10 Takeya Mizugaki

My rationale: Just in case you think bantamweight is deep, it's not.

FLYWEIGHT

Champ Demetrious Johnson
1 Joseph Benavidez
2 John Dodson
3 Ian McCall
4 John Moraga
5 Darren Uyenoyama
6 Jussier Da Silva
7 John Lineker
8 Chris Cariaso
9 Louis Gaudinot
10 Tim Elliott

My rationale: I'm not 100% certain, but I think I ranked every flyweight that is under contract with the UFC. You're going to see a lot of rematches in this division until they rank Pancrase...

POUND FOR POUND

1 Anderson Silva
2 Jon Jones
3 Georges St-Pierre
4 Jose Aldo
5 Ben Henderson
6 Dominick Cruz
7 Demetrious Johnson
8 Renan Barao
9 Cain Velasquez
10 Anthony Pettis

My rationale: No need to explain rationale for P4P, as this list is completely subjective. There are eight champions and one interim champion in the UFC, and I ranked all nine of them. Add Anthony Pettis, and there's your 10.

Anthony Johnson vs. Andrei Arlovski reportedly to headline World Series of Fighting 2 on March 23

Andrei_Arlovski_Affliction_wide_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson had a fairly successful run in the UFC as a welterweight, winning seven of ten fights in the weight class while there. However, he had issues with making weight throughout his run, and ultimately was released when he drastically missed weight for what was supposed to be a middleweight bout with Vitor Belfort.

After that release, he moved up in weight, first taking a 195 lb. catchweight fight in Titan Fighting Championships, then moving to light heavyweight. He's won four straight fights since his UFC release, and in his next fight, he'll move up once again.

According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Johnson will move up to heavyweight at World Series of Fighting 2 on March 23, headlining the event against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski.

Both fighters competed on the first World Series of Fighting event, with Johnson knocking out D.J. Linderman, and Arlovski taking out Devin Cole. For Arlovski, the win moved him to 3-0-1 after a four-fight losing streak. He added a fourth win in five fights in December at an event in Russia.

World Series of Fighting 2 will air live on NBC Sports Network from the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the first event in a new television deal for the WSOF on the network.

Penick's Analysis: This is actually a highly interesting fight. It's insane that Johnson was fighting as a welterweight for so long, because he looked perfectly suited to the light heavyweight division. He'll probably be walking around at 220 lbs. or so for this heavyweight fight, but he's got the striking skills to compete against Arlovski, who has some issues with his chin despite the turnaround of success in his last five fights. This is a really good fight for the WSOF as well, and with Marlon Moraes vs. Tyson Nam booked for the card, they've got two really interesting fights set for this televised event already.

Trainer: Anthony Pettis wants both Jose Aldo bout and UFC Lightweight Championship bout in 2013

Anthony_Pettis_wide_banner_18.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

A night of shocking moments at UFC 156 didn't stop in the cage, as UFC President Dana White revealed at the post-fight press conference that he received a text from top lightweight contender Anthony Pettis expressing interest in a fight with Jose Aldo.

Pettis has been promised a shot at the UFC Lightweight Championship following the Ben Henderson-Gilbert Melendez fight, but with that fight not happening until April, Pettis is interested in keeping himself busy. On top of that, he's not abandoning plans for the Lightweight Championship, as trainer Duke Roufus said on Monday that Pettis still wants that fight as well.

"What if the guy who wins the Henderson-Melendez fight gets hurt or it's a close decision, when does [Pettis] fight?? Roufus said in an interview with ESPN.com. ?He's been in that situation before. So, he's a little gun shy about that. What if the guy who wins the [Benson] Henderson-[Gilbert] Melendez fight gets hurt or it's a close decision, when does [Pettis] fight?"

"Besides, he's coming into the prime of his life. He wants to fight now. He'd fight next week if [the UFC] gives him a body; that's his attitude. He'd fight three more times this year if you could. He wants both. He wants to fight Aldo and then fight for the Lightweight Title. I'm all for it if he wants to do it. I think he matches up great with Aldo."

Roufus believes Pettis hasn't reached anywhere near his potential in MMA, and sees a drive from his protege to become one of the great fighters in the sport's history.

"He has reached that stage of his career and life where he realizes what gets him up are big challenges," Roufus said. "I see the hunger in his attitude and performance daily in training, his lifestyle. He wants big things and he wants them now."

"He wants to put himself up there with guys like [Middleweight Champion] Anderson Silva, who go out there and win big fights."

Penick's Analysis: If Pettis is allowed to go down after Aldo's title, then up to lightweight to go after that championship as well, it'd be an opportunity to assert himself as one of the greatest fighters currently competing in the sport. He's got the skill set to accomplish a lot, and given Aldo's never faced a striker the likes of Pettis, he might be the man to dethrone him. He already holds a win over Henderson, and though the current UFC Lightweight Champion has improved greatly since their first meeting, Pettis' win over Donald Cerrone just over a week ago showed off how far his dangerous striking game has come as well. Pettis-Aldo could be an incredible fight, and if both are ready to go by May, that's a fight that could very well happen.
