Derek Brunson meets Chris Leben on two weeks' notice at UFC 155

http://www.mmafighting.com/2012/12/1...s-leben-on-two

All's well that end's for Derek Brunson.

Months after he was pulled off "The Ultimate Fighter" season 16 right before filming began due to a contractual issue with Showtime, the now former Strikeforce middleweight has agreed to step up on short notice to fight Chris Leben on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas. A slot opened up for Brunson after Karlos Vemola, Leben's original opponent, withdrew from the fight due to an injury.

MMAJunkie.com first reported the news Tuesday night.

Brunson (9-2) will look to get back on the winning track after going 0-2 in 2012, thus far. He lost to Kendall Grove via controversial split decision in June and was then knocked out in just 41 seconds by Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in August.

Then, on a recent episode of The MMA Hour, Brunson said he felt like his luck was getting worse this year after he was pulled off TUF.

"It's a nightmare," Brunson said "Throughout the day I'm like, man, that was the worst-case scenario that actually happened.

"This has not been my year," he said. "What can happen? Nothing, nothing good at this point can happen. I'm thinking all the things that could go possibly wrong are going on at this point."

But just hours before New Year's Day, Brunson can turn his nightmare into a dream. Amazingly, he will be the first Strikeforce fighter to make his UFC debut since it was reported that Strikeforce will fold following its Jan. 12 event.

As for Leben (22-8), he'll look to bounce back from an inactive 2012 due to his year-long suspension for a positive drug test following his UFC 138 loss to Mark Munoz in Nov. 2011.

The Leben vs. Brunson tilt is expected to kick off the pay-per-view, which will be headlined by Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez for the UFC heavyweight title, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

UFC 155 FX Prelims Recap: Wineland takes split, Perez rolls, Varner gets past Guillard, Jury surprises

UFC_on_FX_Logo_wide_12.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The FX preliminary card for Saturday's UFC 155 event provided some solid action in three fights that went the distance, along with another highly impressive showing from a rising prospect in the UFC.

Capping off the prelims was a good, but not great fight between bantamweights Brad Pickett and Eddie Wineland. It was a highly anticipated fight coming in, and nearly provided a great highlight in the first round, but Pickett's chin allowed him to continue. That first round saw Wineland stagger Pickett with some big counter strikes on more than one occasion, but Pickett managed to stay on his feet and recovered well.

He pressed the action throughout the remainder of the fight, landing some nice strikes of his own, but Wineland's counter-striking continued to be effective, and he kept Pickett off his game for much of the fight. Though the second and third rounds were close enough for Pickett to edge them on one judges' scorecard, the other two saw it for Wineland, who earned the split decision for his second straight win.

Prior to that, bantamweight Erik Perez continued the impressive start to his UFC career, winning his third straight fight with a brutal first round stoppage of Byron Bloodworth. Perez dropped Bloodworth with a knee to the body in the clinch midway through the round, and after a minute and a half of ground and pound, Bloodworth was finished. Perez is now 3-0 in the UFC's bantamweight division, and seems to have a bright future ahead of him.

One fighter who may not have a future in the UFC is Melvin Guillard. After winning five straight fights in 2010-2011, Guillard entered Saturday's preliminary card bout with Jamie Varner on a 1-3 run, and he left the event at 1-4 over his last five fights.

Varner took control of the fight from the final minute of the first round. A tentative start saw Guillard open things up with a series of leg kicks, but Varner came back with a flurry late in the round to take the frame. From there, he out-struck a tepid Guillard, and in the third round took him down thrice while still out-striking him. It was a smart, effective performance from the former WEC Lightweight Champion, who may have secured "Comeback Fighter of the Year" honors with his second win in three fights since his Octagon return.

In the opening bout on the night's FX broadcast, two Ultimate Fighter vets clashed in a fight that was seen beforehand as a step down for one of them. However, it was the underdog who came out on top, as Myles Jury dominated Michael Johnson for the entire 15-minute fight to cruise to an easy decision win.

Johnson had won three straight fights, and off his knockout win over Danny Castillo in October, Jury was seen as a strange opponent for his next fight. But it was Jury who surprised everyone, keeping his record perfect at 11-0 with a smart, one-sided performance. He took Johnson down in each round, and kept pressure on him throughout with punches and elbows to earn his second UFC win.

Ian McCall: “I’m 0-1-1, and I’m definitely not happy about it.”

Ian Mccall UFC 156 flyweight contender

There is no questioning that Ian McCall is one of the best flyweights in the world, but “Uncle Creepy” isn’t satisfied with his current status in the UFC. McCall has fought the champion Demetrious Johnson twice now, and he still doesn’t have a win in the Octagon. McCall currently has Joseph Benavidez in his cross hairs for their match-up at UFC 156, but as of right now the fan-favorite is directly south of satisfied with the way things have gone for him so far in the world’s foremost MMA promotion.

McCall told MMAJunkie:

“I’m no longer happy with my career at this point. I need a win. I came to the UFC claiming to be world champion. Now I’m 0-1-1, and I’m definitely not happy about it.”

On Being a number one contender:

“People keep saying, ‘Oh, you’re going to get a title shot after this. I mean, think about. Honestly, neither of us deserve it. I think Demetrious beat both of us. I would say maybe this one, if I win it convincingly, and then fight whoever else after this. Then maybe…. Honestly, I’ll take a title shot at any point. I’m not going to turn that down. But I don’t mind working for it. I’m not some guy that’s just going to talk and talk and talk and say, ‘I deserve this,’ and ‘I deserve that.’ I deserve a fight. Once I win, we’ll talk about what I deserve and what I should be doing.”

Strikeforce confirms January card will be its last

From the second Ronda Rousey's UFC bout with Liz Carmouche was announced, Strikeforce's end was rumored. The promotion has been teetering since having to cancel two cards in a row in September and November. Now, the Zuffa-owned, Showtime-backed promotion has confirmed that their January show will be their last.

“Since 2009, Showtime has been a great partner and we appreciate its support of Strikeforce and our athletes,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said via the promotion's website. “For our final event, we’ve loaded the card with some outstanding fights. This is going to be a memorable night for the sport of mixed martial arts.”

The event takes place Jan. 12 in Oklahoma City, and will feature:

Nate Marquardt vs. Tarec Saffiedine
Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring
Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino
Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Ed Herman
Pat Healy vs. to be determined
Roger Gracie vs. Anthony Smith
Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Smith
KJ Noons vs. Ryan Couture
Jorge Gurgel vs. Adriano Martin
Estevan Payan vs. Michael Bravo

It's a fun card for the finale to a promotion that has provided memorable moments but was plagued with inconsistency.

Demetrious Johnson talks about life as the champ, the skill of flyweights and more

At UFC 152, Demetrious Johnson became the UFC's first flyweight champion. He will attempt to defend that belt against John Dodson at UFC on Fox 6 in Chicago. He spoke with Cagewriter about the fight, life as the champion, and training during the holidays.

Cagewriter: How has life changed since becoming the champion?
Demetrious Johnson: Life has pretty much stayed the same. A lot more people are noticing me. Training is the same. It's still good.

CW: With people noticing you, have you had any weird fan encounters?
DJ: Actually yes. On my Facebook page, there's a guy from Belgium who fights in the Shooto Belgian League. He wants to fight me. I didn't respond, and he said, 'You're scared to fight me.' I didn't even say anything back to him.

CW: With your fight on Fox, casual fans will get to see flyweight fights. What should they expect?
DJ: Flyweights are the most exciting weight class in the UFC. We've got the cardio, the power, the technique, the speed. Fans say I want to see fights finished, but you're going to see great fights in general.

CW: What do you say to people who criticized the lighter weights?
DJ: You have to give us a chance. People are used to seeing heavyweights in boxing and seeing knockouts and all that. When you watch guys from 125-155, we're more skillful and tactical. It's harder for them to respect it. But in the long run, they can see it's smart.

CW: During your win over Joe Benavidez, fans booed and UFC heavyweight Pat Barry stood up and yelled at the booing fans on your behalf. Have you talked to Pat since then?
DJ: No, not at all, but I appreciate Pat doing that. It shows a lot of character. What he did was fantastic. People out there don't understand. Anyone out there who says, 'Flyweights suck,' I can run them through the ringer and show them what I do every day. Show them what's up.

CW: Were you aware of the booing during your fight?
DJ: I was aware a little bit of it. It just happened. You put into play that it was one of the last fights of the night. There was alcohol involved. People getting tired, and I think that's all part of it.

CW: After being an underdog in your last fight, you're a 3-1 favorite in this fight. Does that change anything for you?
DJ: Not at all. It doesn't change anything for me. It changes things for people outside the fight. I'm still focused. I still have to prove myself to the world and prove that I'm the no. 1 flyweight in the world.

CW: On another note, why do you wear neon green shorts?
DJ: One of my sponsorships with Xbox 360, and I wear the green for them. I wear the spandex because they're more comfortable. Everybody loves them. My lady appreciates them.

CW: Does the Xbox sponsorship mean you get games ahead of release date?
DJ: Sometimes I'll get them a few days early. Nothing crazy.

CW: The holidays fall smack in the middle of your training camp. How do you avoid all of the unhealthy treats of the season?
DJ: I'm pretty self-motivated person. I typically eat healthy year-round, so I just keep motivated and keep my eyes on Jan. 26.

CW: Finally, what are you asking Santa for?
DJ: Nothing. I pretty much have everything I want. As long as I have a roof over my head, I'm healthy and my wife is healthy, I can keep training, I'm happy.

UFC 155 ROUNDTABLE: MMATorch staff and contributors rate and review

UFC_155_poster_wide_11.jpg

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST: (5.0)

Solely for Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller

So, I'm watching the Fuel TV post-fight show, despite the presence of the grating Karyn Bryant, and the Todd Duffee vs. Phil DeFries fight was covered in the opening segment. I think that says it all, but since I get paid by the word...

UFC 155 sucked, okay? Sorry. True. The title fight was abysmal. I mean, it wasn't TUF 10 or Rothwell-Hunt, but it sure as hell wasn't Fedor vs. Nog (1 or 3), either. It wasn't Cormier vs. Barnett. It was most comparable to Couture vs. Sylvia, with a split crowd. Meaning, a decent at best fight that people desperately want to claim as something more than what it turned out to be. Nobody remembers the 2005 World Series, and no one's going to remember this fight, partisans aside.

Boetsch vs. Philippou? Brutal.

Okami vs. Belcher? Too Okami.

Leben vs. Brunson? Imagine if they fought in Denver.

Pickett vs. Wineland? Great... for about seven minutes.

Guillard vs. Stephens, I mean Varner? Enough said.

Moraga vs Cariaso? Tedious, until the last 15 seconds. Kind of like sex when you're 60 years old.

But damn if Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon didn't save UFC 155 for me. I don't do eloquent prose, so I won't try to do it justice. Just find a stream if you didn't see it. One of the five best fights of the year, maybe even the best fight of the year.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST: (6.0)

A very promising card on paper, but save for the last two fights, this card hardly delivered. Even exciting fighters like Chris Leben and Tim Boetsch failed to deliver any excitement and the crowd was dead until the phenomenal bloody brawl between Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon. A great fight that really woke the crowd up and delivered on the promise of their announced fight months ago. Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos had a big fight feel and delivered in spades. The only reason this card didn't get a lower rating was because of the last two fights, this one especially. It went longer than it had any right to, but Velasquez put a hurting on Dos Santos in route to regaining the championship. The announce team may want to say that Velasquez looked impressive in regaining his belt, thing is, he couldn't finish a guy that he should have put away in the second. Either way, a solid win for Velasquez, and guarantee, we WILL see a third fight between Dos Santos and Velasquez.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR (8.5)

The under card on FX was good, but not great. Looks like Jamie Varner is preparing for another run at a title. What was the judge that scored the fight 30-27 for Guillard doing instead of watching the fight?

First up was Chris Leben vs. Derek Brunson. It was good to see Leben in the Octagon after serving his 12 month drug suspension. This was a rock em sock em robots kind of fight. How many times have we seen Leben look like he was done and come back for a last minute KO win? It was not to be in this back and forth battle. Leben looked like he had a bad case of ring rust. I am not sure how many more times we will see Chris Leben in the cage. I think his best days are behind him. Brunson has a bright future and with Greg Jackson in his corner the sky is the limit for him. Brunson won a rather boring decision victory.

Yushin Okami vs. Alan Belcher started slow and dead even on my score cards for the first round. Round two went to Okami because he was able to get Belcher to the ground and maintain his dominant position. Round three was an exact duplicate of the second. Belcher will need to once again go back to the drawing board. He was only a fight or two from a title shot before this fight. With this boring loss to Okami he will have much work to get back into title contention. Okami looked better than he has in a while, but I think he will never again challenge for a title.

The first round in the Tim Boetsch vs. Costa Philippou was very even with neither fighter gaining an edge. Boetsch looked as if he had an injury to his right hand and pulled his punches when he threw that hand. In round two Philippou started to gain the advantage with his superior striking and he used some ground and pound to cut the forehead of Boetsch. The fight was stopped in the third round and Boetsch lost because he was not defending himself. Boetsch will need to reload and find ways to improve if he wants to stay in the mix at 185. I am not taking away anything from Philippou, but Boetsch had a possible broken hand, a cut due to an accidental head butt, and his eye was closing from an eye poke. Philippou did not look great and will need to do way better in his next fight if he wants to climb the ranks on the middleweight division.

Joe Lauzon vs. Jim Miller started with Jim Miller landing early and often. Miller opened a cut with a nice elbow and the blood flowed. Miller was dominant from the opening bell to the closing bell of the first. Joe Lauzon looked as if he had been shot in the face he was so bloody. Miller took Lauzon down in the second and stayed in full mount or half guard for more than half the round. Louzon was able to sweep and ended up on top for the second half of the round. Joe Lauzon looked as if he had been shot in the face he was so bloody. GREAT FIGHT! The third round was all on the feet and I scored the third for Lauzon. This fight was to this point in the PPV the fight of the night. What a shame that one of these fighters had to loose. This fight will be a fight of the year candidate. Miller won a close decision. Miller takes another step forward in his progression for a title shot. Lauzon lost this decision but I think this loss will not hurt him too much in the standings and he will be given another top ten fighter in his next fight.

Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez started fast with Velasquez being the aggressor and landing often. I thought that Velasquez had to fight the perfect fight to win. He destroyed Junior in the first round. The second started like the first ended. Junior was taken down at will and could do nothing with Velasquez. This was an unbelievable fight. Cain looked unstoppable. Round three was the same as round one and two. Round four was an exact duplicate of the third. Round five was another total dominant performance by Velasquez. JDS will be back and this loss will make him a better fighter. Velasquez will hopefully meet Overeem soon and that will be an all-time great fight. If JDS can put a win or two together we could see an awesome trilogy with Velasquez. So many times the fights do not match the hype. Tonight they were better than the hype. I am looking forward to many exciting fights in 2013.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: (6.0)

The Facebook prelims were mostly exciting, the FX prelims were pretty good, and then the pay-per-view card got off to a momentum-halting start. The Leben-Brunson fight was awful, attributed to a long layoff from Leben and short notice from Brunson, and even Dana White admitted they made a mistake in putting it on pay-per-view. Then the Okami-Belcher fight was a frustrating viewing experience with Belcher having success, then making little mistakes that allowed Okami to control from top position. And it wasn't all that entertaining. Follow that with a less than thrilling fight that saw Tim Boetsch fall to an eye poke that led to a third round loss against Costa Philippou, and the UFC desperately needed the main and co-main events to step up.

The co-main absolutely saved this card from being a complete dud, as Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon battled for 15 thrilling minutes. Miller's first round beating was ridiculous, and lesser fighters than Lauzon wouldn't have been able to continue from there. But continue he did, and though he wasn't ever able to really get back into the fight, he made things interesting with his submission attempts. It was just a fantastic fight, and late entrant into the "Fight of the Year" discussion.

As for the main event, it was a tale of two fights. The first two rounds were excellent, and hate the fight on its way to all-time great status, and the final three represented everything many loathe about heavyweight MMA at times. Too much clinching, too little offense, and two very tired fighters. Velasquez did plenty to win the rounds, but the fight was essentially decided in that first round.

Roy Nelson Has a Christmas Gift for the Heavyweight Division

Nelson v Mitrione

With a win under his belt at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale over Matt Mtirione, you didn’t really think Roy Nelson‘s focus on VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency) was just going to go away did you? In fact, don’t expect it to ever stop. Whether Nelson is really trying to clean up the sport or he is just trying to needle UFC President Dana White is open for interpretation. What we do know now is that this wasn’t something Nelson aimed at only original opponent Shane Carwin – it’s a practice he plans on on doing from now on.

Nelson told Bloody Elbow:

If you fight Roy Nelson, don’t be surprised if you get asked to participate in VADA. If I can get sponsored, and I can offer a gift to my opponent, it has nothing to do with calling people out or accusing them of anything. It has to do with cleaning up the sport. I want to help keep the sport as pure as possible. I think a lot of people get confused. When I say ‘get sponsored’, I mean on both sides, both figfhters. I’ve basically taken all your freaking excuses out. ‘Oh, it’s gonna cost me money.’ Nope. I’ve taken that out. ‘Oh, I don’t have time.’ Nope. They come to you. You shouldn’t have excuses. It’s a yes or no question. You either think you’re clean, or you’re not.

Nelson spoke of TUF Finals and Colton Smith:

I think at the end of the day, when you’re in TUF, it’s a game show. The goal is to win, so if Colton Smith had the ugliest fight, but won the show, like he did, they have to give him a contract, because that’s the rules. He won the show, and after that, he can fight any which way he wants. They can’t take it away from him, because it’s a game show. He had a game plan, and he executed it. He went out there and rode a guy’s back for three rounds. I think they thought Mike Ricci was gonna win, otherwise GSP wouldn’t have gotten on a plane and come out to be in his corner, but Colton beat him up.

Paul Daley pulled from Bellator MMA's season eight tourney after arrest on assault charges

Bellator_MMA_logo_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Bellator MMA had hoped to kick off their first season on Spike TV by incorporating fans into their season eight welterweight tournament. Unfortunately, neither of the two fighters who received the most fan votes will competing in the field.

The fan vote would have put British welterweight Paul Daley against War Machine in the opening bout of Bellator's first Spike TV show, but an injury to War Machine put that on hold. Now, Daley has been pulled from the tournament as well.

According to a report from Josh Gross at ESPN.com, Daley's tumultuous MMA career hit another snag as he has been arrested on assault charges stemming from a bar fight. Per the report, he's been barred from entering the United States, and faces up to two years in prison with the charges.

It's another major setback for Daley, who was released from his UFC contract in 2010 after sucker punching opponent Josh Koscheck after the bell at UFC 113. However, despite the pending charges, Irish MMA site SevereMMA.com reports that Daley will return to action in Dublin at Cage Contenders 16 on February 23. No opponent is yet set, but his manager says they are looking at four former UFC vets for the fight.

Frankie Edgar brings you with him while exploring the storm-ravaged Jersey Shore

Frankie Edgar, the one-time UFC lightweight champ and the featherweight contender, is a proud native of New Jersey. He grew up on the Jersey Shore, one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. In this video, Edgar tours what used to be the boardwalk and where he used to go for fun as a kid and then brought his kids for fun.

Edgar filmed this video so people around the world would see the devastation, and not forget that the Jersey Shore needs help even though the hurricane isn't on the front page any longer. Check out Restore the Shore to donate or buy items that will benefit the cause.

Rashad Evans Not Looking Beyond Bout with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Rashad Evans

Former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans hasn’t merited much talk as of late in terms of a UFC title-shot with fighters like Dan Henderson, Alexander Gustafsson, and Chael Sonnen stealing the spotlight. However, Evans is definitely one of the division’s best with wins over a number of elite 205ers and a single loss since mid-2009 (by decision to Jon Jones earlier this year).

As a favorite in a match-up against veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira scheduled to take place in February at UFC 156, it would be easy for Evans to underestimate his adversary and focus on climbing back into contention. Fortunately, to hear Evans tell it, his sights are squarely set on beating “Little Nog” and not what might come afterwards.

“I don’t know. I don’t know where that puts me if I get the win over ‘Little Nog’. I’m just gonna do one fight at a time and then let my fights speak for themselves. I want to put a lot of people to sleep and then, if the fans call for it the UFC is gonna give it to me.”

“I’m not gonna worry about how long it’s gonna take. I’m just gonna be consistent and keep winning.”

Check out the full interview with Evans below:

Chris Lytle Would Consider Comeback Under the Right Circumstances

Chris Lytle

Former UFC fighter Chris Lytle may have never challenged for a title but when it came to event-bonuses “Lights Out” was a divisional king. The seasoned scrapper won ten extra paychecks during his time in the Octagon including six Fight of the Night awards.

Though Lytle retired in his relative prime, opting to focus on his loved ones and an attempt at being elected to public office instead of in-ring glory, that’s not to say the 38-year old hasn’t considered a return to the ring. Lytle recently explained he wasn’t actively training for a comeback but would take a fight depending on the specifics involved…

“There always is and it never really left me. The reason I retired was because I wasn’t putting enough time in with the family and I cannot commit myself to that kind of training again, where I’m gone at all times. You never know. I always said if the guy I wanted to fight has something happen to his opponent a week out, I might take that. That could happen, but barring that I’m not gonna go back to training full time.”

“There are a few guys, like a Nick Diaz type guy…maybe something like that. I like the way he comes forward, wants to fight you, punch you in the face, take you out…doesn’t really care about a decision, that’s the way I am. Carlos Condit, something like that.”

Strikeforce Vet Bobby Voelker Welcomes Patrick Cote to Welterweight Division at UFC 158

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Str...-UFC-158-48515

Strikeforce veteran Bobby Voelker will make his Octagon debut on March 16, facing Patrick Cote in a UFC 158 welterweight attraction.

Cote had initially been scheduled to rematch Alessio Sakara at the event, but “Legionarius” was forced to withdraw due to injury. As a result, “The Predator” will make the cut to 170 pounds for the first time in his career against Voelker. UFC 158 takes place at the Bell Centre in Montreal and is headlined by a welterweight title collision between longtime champion Georges St. Pierre and former Strikeforce ruler Nick Diaz.

A winner of three straight fights, Voelker recently capped his trilogy with Roger Bowling by posting a pair of second-round technical knockout victories over the Ohioan, the last of which came in July 2011. Voelker, 33, has not fought since. The five-time Strikeforce vet has competed professionally 32 times in over six years as a pro, stopping 15 of his 24 victims by form of knockout along the way.

Cote, 32, began his career as a light heavyweight before making the move to 185 pounds in 2005, eventually challenging Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title in 2008. Following his defeat to “The Spider,” Cote returned to the Octagon in 2010 after a lengthy injury layoff. Back-to-back losses would then signal Cote’s UFC release, but the native Quebecer was called back to the organization earlier this year, as “The Predator” was outpointed by ex-Strikeforce king Cung Le at UFC 148. Cote most recently fought Sakara last month at UFC 154, winning by disqualification after the Italian landed a series of illegal blows to the back of his head.

Bellator and ‘TUF’ to new nights: How your MMA-watching will be different in 2013

Your MMA watching schedule will look drastically different in 2013. You will be able to catch MMA from the UFC and Bellator on weeknights.

According to MMA Junkie, an advertisement in the next edition of UFC 360 (formerly the UFC magazine) said the next edition of the show will air on Tuesdays on FX. Chael Sonnen and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones are the coaches for the next season. Currently, the show airs on Friday nights, and ratings have taken a nosedive. With a new night and two of their most popular fighters serving as coaches, the UFC is hoping to right the TUF ship.

Bellator announced Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal's debut will air on Jan. 17, a Thursday, according to MMA Fighting. There have also been reports that the promotion's first show on Spike will air on Jan. 10, but only the Jan. 17 date has been confirmed. This signals the promotion's move from Friday to Thursday nights.

The best part of this is that the two promotions won't be fighting for MMA fans' eyes. Tuesday nights are generally light on sports, so the UFC has a chance not just to have MMA fans tune in, but also to pick up new fans.

For Bellator, their season begins when the NFL is in playoffs. They won't have to compete with football on Thursday nights. The new night and the move to Spike -- and a widely available HD channel -- should help to get more eyes on the tournament-based promotion.

Will the night change affect how much you watch "The Ultimate Fighter" and Bellator? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

ASK THE TORCH: Amadi answers reader questions on the death of Strikeforce, fighters refusing fights, and more

Amadi_Jason_wide_banner_5.jpg

By: Jason Amadi, MMATorch Columnist

Pete writes: I recently went on a trip to northern Arkansas and was surprised to see several MMA training facilities in a couple of very small towns. Do you believe that in the next 10 years we may actually be looking at MMA as a totally different animal, maybe even collegiate MMA? I can tell you that I didn't see any volleyball training facilities during my entire trip!

A: There's no way we'll ever see collegiate MMA, but I do think with the UFC now on Fox and more big time sponsors getting involved in the sport, we'll definitely see a greater cultural acceptance of mixed martial arts in the United States.

Training MMA is a great way to stay and shape and build self confidence, even if you don't necessarily intend to become a professional fighter.

Victor writes: Do you think Strikeforce is over in January? Or is a scheme to get viewers to tune in for that event for ratings.

A: Strikeforce is almost as big of a liability to Showtime as it is Zuffa at this point. The roster is so top heavy that if any of the few genuine stars they have get injured, they'll have to scrap entire cards. We saw this happen twice in the span on a few months with Strikeforce. For Zuffa, they'd obviously love to be able to take the rest of their stars and bolster the UFC roster.

It's been confirmed that Ronda Rousey and the 135 pound women's division is bound for the UFC. If there were even a chance that Strikeforce were going to continue on Showtime, there's no way the network would be willing to part with a star like Rousey and all of her challengers.

Strikeforce is dead and all mixed martial arts fans should rejoice.

Tanar writes: How are UFC contracts structured? Specifically, how are they structured when it comes to who fights whom? During the UFC 151 debacle, it was stated that Jon Jones refused to fight Chael Sonnen, Lyoto Machida refused to fight Jon Jones, and then suddenly we get Belfort v. Jones. Or with Carlos Condit electing to wait for GSP to get better rather than defend his interim title. Or from what I've read about everyone refusing a fight with Glover Texeria.

In past experiences with EVERY JOB I'VE EVER HAD, electing not to do your job (for UFC fighters, fighting), doesn't go over well. Is it because the UFC doesn't have a structured set up for who fights next (#1 contendership, tournament, etc) that they give the latitude to the fighters? Or are the fighters independent contractors to the UFC rather than actual employees?

A: First of all, yes, fighters are independent contractors and not actual employees. As for the other part of your question, every fight is put together with bout agreements. Technically, the fighters have the right to opt out of competing against anyone they want, but only legitimate stars have the option to exercise that right without fear of getting cut. Obviously, a relative unknown that gets signed isn't going to come in with a long list of demands.

For fans, it would be awesome if fighters had no rights and would be obligated to compete when the UFC wanted and against whomever they wanted, but at the end of the day, the fighters deserve that kind of freedom.

Professional fighters generally have short careers. For their sake and for the sake of their families, they have to find ways to make as much money as they can, as quickly as they can. Sometimes, that means taking fights that have the right balance of risk and reward.

The best of example of that was really the proposed Mauricio Rua-Glover Teixiera matchup that was bandied about earlier this year. "Shogun" was vilified for his decision to turn down that fight, but at that point in time, beating Glover Teixiera wouldn't have progressed his career in any way. No one knew who he was and it's apparent to everyone now that Rua would have had to have gone through hell to pick up a win against Teixiera.

The same is true even at the highest level. We've seen Georges St-Pierre hesitate to accept a fight with Anderson Silva, Anderson Silva hesitate to take a fight with Jon Jones, and Jon Jones hesitate to take the fight with Anderson Silva. The fact is, all of these guys are super rich, and unless there's just a ridiculous amount of money on the table, they'll proceed with their careers any way they please.

With all of the talk of fighters being "modern day gladiators," it often gets lost on people that they're also professional sportsmen with a limited window to make an amount of money that will support them and their families for the rest of their lives.

Tim Kennedy Blasts Fellow Strikeforce Fighters for Late Withdrawals

Strikeforce: Rockhold v Kennedy

Strikeforce middleweight Tim Kennedy lives his life by a certain code as a man who has spent a good deal of his adulthood in the military as a Special Forces sniper. He believes in loyalty, honor, and respect, embracing many of the same concepts as a widely respected Mixed Martial Artist.

As such, Kennedy often speaks openly pertaining to issues he’s passionate about even if his opinion isn’t always going to be popular. The latest subject the 14-4 Kennedy has addressed in such a manner has to do with the number of Strikeforce fighters who have withdrawn at the last minute from recent events including the company’s upcoming finale on Showtime in January.

“It’s pathetic and convenient for every single marquee fighter in all of Strikeforce, that we all know to be going over to the UFC, are pulling out of their fights, two weeks before the final card. It’s like, are you guys fighters, or are you just a bunch of little vaginas?”

“The whole thing seems like a big bunch of horse sh*t. ‘Yeah, I’m gonna call all these dudes out, because I’m a super tough fighter, this is MY hood, fight me, blah blah blah, oh wait, I hurt my wrist, and I’m gonna be going to the UFC, so I’m not gonna fight. I’m just gonna wait and fight somebody in the UFC.’ What? What just happened? Blech. Whatever.”

On the pride he personally takes in being part of Strikeforce’s last show:

“Strikeforce has been good to me. I’ve had a great run with them. I fought for their title twice, but a lot of the fights that I’ve wanted to take place, haven’t, because of relationships with Showtime. I think we’ve kind of been the ugly, red-headed step child that shows up at Christmas that nobody is truly excited to see. That’s how it’s felt for the past couple years.”

“I’m excited to be on the final show, and I think it’s a testament to the guys that are still on the show, that they are actually real fighters, and not just going out there to make a buck and promote themselves. Great things will happen after this.”

Chad Mendes vs. Manny Gamburyan possible for UFC 157

http://www.mmamania.com/2012/12/20/3...57-anaheim-mma

Former UFC featherweight No. 1 contender Chad Mendes will make a quick turnaround after his knockout victory over Yaotzin Meza at UFC on FX 6 as "Money" is reportedly scheduled to take on Armenian judoka Manny Gamburyan at UFC 157 on Feb. 23, 2013.

A featherweight bout between former division number one contender Chad Mendes and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season five runner-up Manny Gamburyan has reportedly been added to UFC 157 for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 23, 2013.

Both men are coming off recent victories; Mendes over Yaotzin Meza at UFC on FX 6 last weekend (Dec. 14, 2012) and Gamburyan over Michihiro Omigawa at UFC on Fox 4 back in August.

Grant Gordon of the Glendale News-Press first reported news of the bout; however, UFC officials have yet to confirm the featherweight match up.

Mendes (13-1) is coming off back-to-back first-round knockout victories, most recently over Meza, who he finished in the first round in Australia. "Money" currently holds an 8-1 record under the ZUFFA banner (UFC and WEC) with the lone defeat coming to UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 142 last January.

After unsuccessfully challenging "Junior" for the title, Mendes will take on an unranked opponent for a third consecutive fight.

Gamburyan (12-7) only competed once in 2012, earning a unanimous decision over Omigawa. Prior to the victory, "The Anvil" suffered three consecutive defeats at the hands of Diego Nunes, Tyson Griffin and Jose Aldo.

Over the course of his nearly 14-year MMA career, the 31-year-old has finished eight of his 12 opponents; including notable victories over former WEC champion Mike Brown and Leonard Garcia.

It is unknown at this time if Mendes vs. Gamburyan will take place on the pay-per-view (PPV) portion of the card, or the preliminary card, which is expected to air on FX and Facebook.

UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" is headlined by the first ever UFC women's bantamweight championship bout as Ronda Rousey attempts to defend her UFC title for the first time against Liz Carmouche. Also announced for the card is a light heavyweight contender bout of Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida and a bantamweight rematch between Urijah Faber and Ivan Menjivar.

All 22 fighters from The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale test negative for PEDs, drugs of abuse

TUF_Fridays_Wide_Image_21.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The Nevada State Athletic Commission administered drug tests to all 22 participants of December 15's Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale event, and all fighters on the event tested clean for performance enhancing drugs and drugs of abuse.

NSAC executive director Keith Kizer informed MMATorch on Monday that all drug test results came back negative for any banned substances.

The event was headlined by Roy Nelson vs. Matt Mitrione on FX, which Nelson won by TKO in the first round. That was just one of many finishes on the night, as the main card alone also saw Pat Barry knock out Shane Del Rosario, and Dustin Poirier submit Jonathan Brookins with a D'Arce choke.

The 16th season of The Ultimate Fighter came to a close at the event as well, as Team Nelson's Colton Smith defeated Team Carwin's Mike Ricci by decision in the night's co-main event.

HYDEN BLOG: Dana White vs. Bob Arum on The Art of Sport

Hyden_wide_7.jpg

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

Dana White recently said that Bob Arum, current promoter of boxing's Manny Pacquiao, was a moron for booking Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao was 2-0-1 against Marquez, but all the fights were close. White says that Pacquiao should have fought Timothy Bradley in a rematch that Pacquiao lost by decision even though most saw it in Pacquiao's favor.

Basically, Dana is saying that Arum should have booked Pacquiao in an easier fight. I'm of two minds on this, though I do lean heavily towards one side. On the one hand, I do understand the idea of protecting and building up one of the few money draws in the boxing business. On the other hand, I think that the sports aspect should always take precedent. I'm not a fan of anyone ducking someone else. That brings to mind a situation earlier this year where Mauricio "Shogun" Rua turned down a fight with Glover Teixeira, because it would have been a tough fight with no real upside for Shogun since Teixeira is a relative unknown.

At the time I said that Shogun is within his rights to refuse the fight, but that he weakens himself when he admits to his reason. He would have been better off not saying anything. It's not as though this has stained him forever or anything like that, but anything negative is bad. The phrase "There's no such thing as bad publicity" or the variant, "Any publicity is good publicity" is a crock. It ranks right up there with, "Money can't buy you happiness" as one of the biggest lies ever said. Bad publicity isn't a good thing, and the only people who say otherwise are just plain lying. If Chael Sonnen wasn't goodtime buddies with Dana White he'd be teaching wrestling in Oregon instead of being gifted title shot after title shot in the UFC. The reason is that Sonnen brings bad publicity to the UFC. You could put up with that if he was worth the trouble, but Sonnen isn't.

This leads to the garbage side of what White said about Bob Arum. For years he has ripped boxing and Arum for not putting together the big fights that people want to see, for putting guys in fights against easier opponents for a less risky payday. Now, Dana is advocating just such a thing. This leads directly into Chael Sonnen getting a title shot against UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones even though Sonnen hasn't competed in the division in years, and is also coming off of a trouncing at the hands of UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Giving Jones a title fight against Sonnen is the least risky of the potential options for Jones at this point. Jones has nothing to fear from Sonnen in the stand-up or submissions areas. The only thing that Sonnen does well is his wrestling, and at this point I would say that Jones even has the advantage there, given Sonnen's age.

It sounds as though White has changed his tune on Arum because the UFC has changed its tune on these kinds of fights. The bad news for us is that the Jones vs. Sonnen fight is going to do well on pay-per-view, almost entirely based on the allure of Jon Jones. Honestly, I don't think Sonnen will help the draw at all. I think you could substitute anyone else in there and achieve the same numbers or better. In fact, I think a Jones fight against Dan Henderson would do even better numbers.

This fight is bad news for several reasons, most of which I've discussed at length. It's also bad news because it will do good numbers on PPV, which will make Dana and the UFC even more bold in booking Sonnen in fights he doesn't deserve. UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos better watch out, Chael Sonnen will be showing up for a title shot in late 2013/early 2014.

Another "UFC vs. Strikeforce" bout has been booked for an upcoming card, as lightweight Sam Stout will welcome Caros Fodor to the Octagon at UFC 157 on Feb. 23, 2013, in Anaheim.

We may not have ever gotten that UFC vs. Strikeforce dream card so many (few?) of us wanted but as more and more of the latter promotion's fighters migrate over to the former, we'll still get to see plenty of interesting match-ups that may or may not have ended up on said hypothetical dream card, were it to ever happen.

Like this one.

Neil Davidson of The Canadian Press brings word that Sam Stout will welcome Caros Fodor to the Octagon in a lightweight battle booked for UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" on Sat., Feb. 23, 2013, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

It will be a quick turnaround for Stout, who is fresh on the heels of his loss to John Makdessi on the preliminary card of the UFC 154: "St. Pierre vs. Condit" event that went down just this past Nov. 17 in Montreal. The Canadian couldn't get his stone hands off and found himself on the business end of a unanimous decison.

Fodor, meanwhile, will have gone nearly a year between bouts by the time fight night rolls around. He last competed back in March at Strikeforce: "Tate vs. Rousey" in Columbus, where he was submitted by top 155-pound contender Pat Healy in the third round. It marked just the second loss of his career and his first in his last six fights.

This is a statement fight. No title contenders will be made but we'll have a much better idea of where each guy's career is headed by the time it's all said and done.

Couldn't ask for much more than that.

UFC 157 will make history as the promotion's first-ever female champion, bantamweight badass Ronda Rousey, puts her 135-pound title on the line against ex-Strikeforce contender Liz Carmouche. Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson will also be squaring off in light heavyweight action.

UFC Champ Jon Jones hopes to show "wisdom outweighs age" as coach on TUF 17

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I'm definitely excited to show America that age is just a number, and wisdom outweighs age any day. I guess the biggest thing that I did was demand respect through legitimacy between everything I said to the guys and what I expected out of the guys to the vibe I gave off to these guys. I was definitely there to be those guys' mentor, friend and supporter. Obviously it's about those guys and not me, but I want to be a role model, too, despite the age difference. I want to lead by example and show these guys what has made me me and give them a piece of that.

I need to show America that I'm a champion. I'm a champion coach. I'm a guy who is not going to be stingy with his success. I'm going to try and motivate others with his success and share his success and ultimately bring up the whole sport of mixed martial arts, whether it's an individual athlete or an ideal or anything. My job is to pay it forward.

I look at this way, and it's very simple: Somebody put me on to this world of mixed martial arts, and I owe a great deal to that person. the only way I can truly ever say thank you in my eyes is to put someone else on it. So when I'm in the locker room, I look at all of my guys as, 'Which one of you guys is going to be the next guy? Which one of you guys can I bless by giving you my best?' That's the way I feel about the whole situation. I want to put someone else up. I want to change someone else's life. I want to give back to the sport and be a contributor to one of the next great fighters."

-UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones talks to MMAJunkie.com about his role as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter.

Penick's Analysis: Jones' confidence in himself doesn't always sit well with fans, and at times he's not the best at articulating exactly what he means, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that he's the best fighter that has come into this sport in a very long time, and no matter how badly he rubs people outside of the cage, there's no denying the things he brings inside of it. I don't know how he's going to come across as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, and honestly, the way he comes across in interviews like this may not translate to a positive effect on everyone who works with and/or under him. Still, he's got a lot to offer just from what his natural skills bring into the cage, and what he can do once he's in there, so if the fighters under him are attentive, and open to what he brought to the TUF gym from a coaching standpoint, they'll all be better for it.
