A pair of bouts is now official for UFC 157 as lightweight Mike Chiesa (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets Anton Kuivanen (17-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Lavar Johnson (17-6 MMA, 2-1 UFC) faces Brendan Scahub (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC).
UFC officials today announced both fights are now scheduled for the Feb. 23 event, which takes place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.
Johnson vs. Schaub is likely to be part of the main card, and Chiesa vs. Kuivanen likely will be on the prelims.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported the Johnson-Schaub booking, which was rescheduled from UFC on FOX 5 when Johnson suffered a pulled groin a week prior to the event and was forced to withdraw.
The fight comes at a time when both heavyweights are in need of a win inside the octagon. Johnson faced Stefan Struve on short-notice at UFC 146 and lost via first-round submission, which was his first loss in the octagon after back-to-back first-round stoppage wins.
Schaub, meanwhile, has lost back-to-back fights, both in the first round. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira knocked him out at UFC 134, and Ben Rothwell did the same at UFC 145. However, prior to that, he had put himself in the title picture by winning four straight fights.
Meanwhile, Chiesa was also expected to fight at UFC on FOX 5 before illness forced him off the card. His scheduled opponent, Marcus LeVesseur, ended up serving as a late replacement for Tim Means and fought Abel Trujillo at the event. Now Chiesa, the winner of "The Ultimate Fighter 15," meets Finnish fighter Kuivanen, who looks to build on the strength of a UFC 149 split-decision win over Mitch Clarke. Prior to that, he suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Justin Salas in his UFC debut, which snapped the Estonian-born Finnish fighter's nine-fight win streak.
The latest UFC 157 card now includes:
Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche - for women's bantamweight title
Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida
Urijah Faber vs. Ivan Menjivar
Lavar Johnson vs. Brendan Schaub
Court McGee vs. Josh Neer
Mike Chiesa vs. Anton Kuivanen
Neil Magny vs. Jon Manley*
