Former Ultimate Fighter finalist Ed Herman has been tabbed to replace an injured Lorenz Larkin to face former champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at Janurary's final Strikeforce event. Find out all the details below.
What was once pegged to be a middleweight title tilt now has none of the original participants....and it also won't be happening at middleweight.
Strikeforce announced today that current UFC middleweight will be heading to Strikeforce for the promotion's final event to face former Strikeforce Middleweight champion Ronaldo Souza. Herman replaces Souza's original opponent, Lorenz Larkin, who is apparently out with a knee injury.
Due to the short notice of Herman's fight acceptance, the bout will be taking place at a 194 pound catchweight.
Larkin was originally supposed to fight Luke Rockhold for the Strikeforce Middleweight Title but the champion backed out with an injury, leaving him with the former champion "Jacare" as a replacement. Now, Larkin joins the laundry list of fighters who have backed out of this upcoming Strikeforce show with injuries.
Ed Herman has an opportunity to be the first UFC fighter to transition over to Strikeforce. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir was supposed to break the seal but he also was (you guessed it) injured before the last November Strikeforce show, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the event.
Herman enters the fight coming off a unanimous decision loss to former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields, although the result was overturned when Shields tested positive for a yet-to-be-named banned substance.
Souza has fought twice since losing his title, stopping Bristol Marunde and Derek Brunson in consecutive fights. The Brunson bout in particular was exceptionally violent, resulting in a brutal 41 second knockout, the first of the former Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion's career.
