World Series of MMA to televise live event on NBC Sports in November

According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, new MMA promotion tabbed World Series of Fighting has been issued a license to promote events in the State with a targeted date of November 3 as its first event. It is believed the Planet Hollywood Arena will play host to the company’s initial show, providing a seating capacity of 6,000 attendees.

Also, on the documents turned into the NSAC, the promotion listed that the event will be televised on NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus). However, the broadcast date or actual deal haven’t been confirmed by the network.

MMAWeekly was first to report the matter.

The debut card, said to contain more than ten bouts, has not been announced though an ad on the company website is promoting a bout between UFC veteran Roger Huerta and Kurt Southern. Also on the site, a list revealing the company’s roster contains a few familiar names like Rolles Gracie, Marcus Aurelio, Thales Leites and Gilbert Yvel. The website also notes a tournament-format, stating, “Fighters will compete in five weight classes ranging from 155 to 265 pounds.  The tournament will start and finish within a twelve-month period and five champions will be crowned.”

It is also being reported that K1 and MMA fighter Ray Sefo will be serving as the organization’s president.

WALKER: Examining the Age of the Dominant Champion in the UFC

By: Brad Walker, MMATorch Columnist

JonesJones_180_74.jpg
It can be said that we have entered a new age of champion in the sport of mixed martial arts, the age of the dominant champion. Six of the eight weight classes in the UFC have champions who have successfully defended their belts, and they have done so in dominating fashion. Prior to this we have seen some champions come and go without a single defense, but now it seems the times have changed. Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, Junior dos Santos, Jose Aldo, and Dominick Cruz, are these the champions who cannot be beat? Let's take a look at each one and the possibilities that lay ahead of them on their path.

Junior dos Santos - UFC HW Champion (15-1 with 1 Successful Defense)

JDS will relentlessly punch you in the face until you fall over unconscious, and if that doesn't work he's going to make you bleed until the fight ends. He has run through the entire division with one fluke loss early in his career, but no matter who the UFC has thrown in front of him he has just picked up steam. He has defeated the best of the best so far, and will continue to fight the top tier guys, and will probably run straight through them without so much as a moment of hesitation. Can he be defeated? has become the question to answer; he's not even into his 30's and the man has so much room to grow. However, his future opponents do as well.

Cain Velasquez will test dos Santos again in December, wanting to regain his title, though it remains to be seen whether or not Cain will stand in front of JDS again and get knocked silly. Alistair Overeem is probably next in line after Cain, as long as his urine doesn't come out with muscle fibers already growing, but Overeem has a questionable chin and almost always has. After that we don't have many big challengers for him; Daniel Cormier would make for one hell of a scrap, but we are yet to see him face a striker of dos Santos' capabilities. Shane Carwin could theoretically work himself into a rematch if he comes back at full health, but only time will tell if his back is going to be a future problem. Lastly, Jon Jones moving up to heavyweight could be a hell of a scrap – but I highly doubt that Jones is going to move from his throne in the LHW division.

Likelihood of Dos Santos Being Beaten: Decent
Best Chance: Alistair Overeem

Jon "Bones" Jones – UFC LHW Champion (16-1 with 3 Successful Title Defenses)

Can Jonny Bones be stopped? It is a question that has been lurking in the minds of fans and writers alike since the day he stepped in and demolished Shogun Rua. After tearing through Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Rashad Evans, very few viable challenger lay before him in the division – but do any of them stand a chance of defeating the young champ? The honest answer is probably not, but stranger things have happened – like the fall of the Ice Man. Let's look at his potential future challengers.
First on the list is Vitor Belfort, a former champion himself with quick and powerful hands, Vitor may be able to stand and strike with Jones, but will likely wind up on his back and fall victim to a submission. Dan Henderson is also an awaiting challenger, but recovering from something like an MCL injury is not easy especially at his age, but I do stand by the fact that the H-Bomb may be the only weapon capable of stopping Jones. Chael Sonnen also comes to mind as a potential future suitor; I doubt Sonnen will do much against the much larger, and more powerful Jones, however I don't doubt that he will at the very least make it a fight. Glover Teixeira will likely wiggle his way into contender ship during the next year or so – his heavy hands and well-rounded game will make him a very viable opponent - but who knows how that will come out for him. Last but not least is Mr. Alexander Gustaffson, who possesses the length and power to throw Jones off of his game, but with his submission loss to Phil Davis I expect Jones would take him down and submit him in quick fashion.

Likelihood of Jones Being Beaten: Reasonable

Best Chance: Tie between Dan Henderson and Glover Teixeira

Anderson Silva - UFC MW Champion (32-4 with 10 Successful Defenses)

The best pound for pound fighter in the world, he has defeated literally every fighter the UFC has been able to put in the cage against him. He has no holes in his game, he doesn't tolerate trash talk, and he comes in ready to finish every single fight. The man is a monster of such terrible reign that his division is full of "hopeful contenders" rather than viable opponents. Silva can submit you, knock you out, or just flat out take points and walk away from the fight with an easy decision. Luckily for us as fans we get to see him go for the kill nearly every time, which really keeps his title reign entertaining to the fullest extent.

There aren't really more than a couple of contenders right now for Silva to possibly face. Chris Weidman has his name in the hat, but as much as he believes he's a dangerous matchup for the Spider, I don't believe there is such thing as "dangerous" in Anderson Silva's world. Vitor Belfort could earn his way back to the top with a strong showing against Jon Jones, and as far as I'm concerned has the best chance of defeating him. Chael Sonnen has bailed out of the division leaving somewhat of a gap at the top for either Michael Bisping or Brian Stann to fill, however neither of them would be very likely to defeat Silva. For any other opponents we'd have to look at Strikeforce champ Luke Rockhold and let's face it, that fight won't be happening anytime soon.

Likelihood of Silva Being Beaten: Slim to None
Best Chance: Vitor Belfort

Georges St Pierre – UFC WW Champion (22-2 with 6 Successful Defenses)

A man who has played second fiddle in the p4p rankings since the explosion of Anderson Silva, GSP is still at least the second most established champion in the UFC. He has defeated a string of opponents in easy fashion, only having lost maybe 3-4 rounds the entire time. He is the man who has changed the 170 pounds division into a battleground worthy of the days of gladiators; however, the men shedding their blood are probably doing it in vain. Coming back from his injury could be a tough road, and time will tell us if we will get the same GSP we had before. Also, although he has claimed to have re-found his love for the sport, we don't know exactly what that means. Can the real GSP remain the champion in the UFC of today?
His next bout is to unify the belts against Carlos Condit, a man I fully expect GSP to run straight through as if he was a wet paper bag. After that we have Johny Hendricks, because let's face it Kampmann will choke and get KO'd quickly. Hendricks can give GSP trouble on his feet, but once GSP takes him down, the fight is basically over. A returning Nate Marquardt at 170 pounds could be a problem for the champ, but again GSP would prevail in a long five round snooze fest if that were to come to fruition.

Likelihood of GSP Being Beaten: Abysmal

Best Chance: Nick Diaz (yeah, I said it)

Jose Aldo – UFC FW Champion (21-1 with 5 Successful Defenses)

Aldo is the smallest version of Anderson Silva that could ever be imagined, and his all-around ability makes him downright scary. He has torn through each UFC opponent thus far and his one career loss stinks of a fluke submission. Aldo is going to be facing a tough series of fighters in his division, which thickens up each time a lightweight loses. Being the champion was never meant to be easy, but Aldo has made it appear to be a cakewalk. How about those top contenders – who is going to put him to the test?

Eric Koch is the next guy in line, and though I have learned to expect less from Aldo's opponents Koch should give him a good test; but in the end Aldo will come out victorious. Frankie Edgar at 145 pounds could be a serious threat to Aldo's belt – and we all know Edgar will scrap until the very end. Other possible opponents will continue to line up but as far as the UFC goes those are the only two posing a potential threat right now. Let's take a look into Bellator because they hold the only fighter capable of beating Aldo right now – their very own champ Pat Curran. Both men like to stand and bang, and it would just be a matter of who fell over first at the end of the day.

Likelihood of Aldo Being Beaten: Unlikely

Best Chance: Pat Curran

Dominick Cruz – UFC BW Champion (19-1 with 4 Successful Defenses)

Cruz is a very scary man for his size and weight class, and I wouldn't wish anyone the bad luck of standing across the cage from him. He has definitively beaten every challenger thus far, and made most of them look downright foolish. It really doesn't matter right now who is in contention due to Cruz's being sidelined with an injury, but Interim Champ Renan Barao will happily thin out the division. The bout between those two will be a battle of the titans, but for now we have to sit back and wait on another injured champion. I have no doubt that he will return to form and once again dominate, but who is going to be left for him to fight?

Michael McDonald comes to mind, with his heavy hands he can be a very scary man to step into the cage with. Renen Barao will likely still be carrying the interim belt with him when Cruz returns, and I suspect we could see the belts unified on a new champion. Outside of those two men anyone else giving him a run for his money is a serious reach. Faber is all but beaten out of the title picture, and Miguel Torres is on his way to a new company. Cruz may have the luckiest division of them all in terms of top 10 opponents, because he can decimate almost every one of them.

Likelihood of Cruz Being Beaten Good

Best Chance: Renan Barao

UFC Loans Image Rights To Deadmau5 For Music Video

The electronic music giant known as Deadmau5, has released the most expensive electronic music video of all time. You are likely wondering how this affects your day and why you’re reading it on an MMA news site. There is a simple reason for that, the UFC has partnered with Deadmau5 and allowed him use of the brand as well as their commentator, Mike Goldberg. The song is called “Professional Griefers”, and features Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. The video’s treatment is a futuristic UFC: “Fight Night” (remember those?) that features the two performers battling with giant robots, as we’ve become accustomed to seeing in drops on Fox cards.

Greg Jackson Responds To Dana White's Harsh Comments

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

Today it was announced via conference call by UFC President Dana White that UFC 151 has been cancelled due to an injury suffered by Dan Henderson in training. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was offered a fight against Chael Sonnen for the September 1st card but turned down the fight thus forcing the company to cancel the pay per view event.<Br><Br>

White's blamed Jones and his trainer, Greg Jackson for Jones not accepting the fight, calling the coach from New Mexico a "sport killer". Jackson responded while speaking with Mauro Ranallo on <a href=http://blogs.thescore.com/mma/2012/08/23/the-mma-show-podcast-luke-thomas-spencer-kyte-bjorn-rebney-eric-albarracin/>The MMA Show</a>:<Br><Br>

"I was asked if it was smart to take a fight on three days notice and I don't think it's smart to do that," Jackson said on The MMA Show. "Three days to fight a guy that caliber is not a smart thing to do. I'm not trying to ruin the sport or cancel an event. I don't know about that stuff, but thought it wasn't a wise course of action."<br><Br>

"I really like Dana and respect him...there is no ill feelings. I'm more confused than anything else."<Br><Br>
"It's a serious fight with serious ramifications. I don't think I need to reach out to Dana. I didn't mean to cancel an event and was asked to give an opinion and I gave it. We all got together and are on the same sheet of music. These guys are professional promoters and that's what they do," he continued.<br><Br>

"I didn't know they had it all riding on one fight. It's one of those things...as a trainer. I'll give you my opinion. I'm not a yes man...I do what's best for my guy. I'm surprised by the veracity of his response but that's my opinion."<Br><Br>

Mark Munoz interested in fighting Hector Lombard

UFC middleweight Mark Munoz was on the cusp of contending for the divisional title before running into Chris Weidman last month and suffering a devastating knockout in the bout’s second stanza. The loss snapped a four-fight winning streak for Munoz and sent him back to the drawing board.

Though Munoz is still serving a medical suspension it appears he already has a specific opponent in mind for his return to the ring – Hector Lombard. The two talented 185ers exchanged some trash-talk leading up to their most recent outings with Lombard even stating he would rather fight “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” than compete for a championship.

“You know Hector Lombard has been talking a lot about me so I don’t mind fighting him. I know he’s upset about what I said about him…I didn’t want to disrespect him at all. That’s just how I felt…I didn’t want to disrespect him as a fighter. He’s a very good fighter, but if he wants to go, we can go,” said Munoz in an interview with BJPenn.com, adding, “I’m anxious to get back in there.”

Lombard: “I want to fight him bad.”

Earlier this month, the 31-3-1 Lombard announced he would be out until mid-September in order to heal from a few injuries he suffered while training for his Octagon debut. The former Bellator champ ultimately lost a Split Decision to Tim Boetsch at UFC 149 but was competitive throughout, even deserving the judges’ nod in the eyes of many, and had won more than twenty straight scraps entering the event.

Anderson Silva: 'A Lot Of People Thought I Was Gay'

"A lot of people thought I was gay," Anderson Silva admits.

It has been observed numerous times over the years that the middleweight champion has an unusually high-pitched voice for such an alpha male and Silva says that when he was a teenager, more than one person thought he was gay.

That probably wasn’t helped by the fact that until around the age of 14 he thought it was "normal" to allow his sister to dress him up with girl’s clothes and play with dolls.

"We would wear a dress, put on her shoes," the UFC champion tells Tatame with admirable frankness. "And because I am very vain about my appearance, and have a high voice, a lot of people were sure I was gay."

Silva is married to his wife Dayane of 15 years, and has five children (three sons and two daughters).

Initial autopsy report inconclusive in South Carolina fighter’s death

An initial autopsy performed on Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, an amateur fighter who died on Saturday night after competing at a regional fight show in South Carolina, has proven inconclusive, according to the Charleston County Coroner.  Toxicology tests are pending.

Mims was stepping into the cage for the first time, and was competing at an event called "Fight Night at the Point VI."  He allegedly suffered minimal damage during his bout, and witness accounts had him dominating throughout the first round.  But Mims began appearing exhausted in the second round, and when the 30-year-old seemed unable to improve his position, the referee stopped the bout.  Mims was taken backstage; when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he died.

Mims, a Georgia resident, was taking part in a reality show titled "Georgia Boy's Grits-n-Glory."  The show released the following statement:

One of the fighters, who happened to be our own Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, was fatally injured tonight, possibly as a result of his fight.  The promoters and the South Carolina Fight Commission consulted with the fighters and all involved and decided as a result of the death of one of their own we should call off the rest of the fights.  The promoters and the Athletic Commission did everything in their power according to protocol and this accident was beyond their control.  We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you'll understand as we deal with the gravity of the situation.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Teestea and his immediate family, which include his five children.

This is the second mixed martial arts-related death in South Carolina history.  In 2010, amateur fighter Michael Kirkham died from a brain hemorrhage after suffering a knockout at an event in Aiken, S.C.

As per state regulation, amateur fighters must pass an eye exam, be screened for HIV and Hepatitis, and pass a cursory examination by a physician prior to getting in the cage.  It is unknown if Mims had completed those requirements.

Georges St-Pierre medically cleared, bout with Carlos Condit on for UFC 154 in Montreal

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GSP_WK150_32.jpg
After a spring and summer that has featured nothing but injury woes and shakeups for the UFC, some good news came out on Tuesday for one of the events this fall.

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, who has been on the sidelines since last year with a pair of knee injuries, and who has spent most of 2012 rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn ACL, announced on Tuesday that he's been medically cleared to return to competition.

Going on Twitter and other social networking platforms, St-Pierre revealed the good news, and confirmed that he's set for Nov. 17 and UFC 154 in Montreal. His bout with Carlos Condit has been expected for that event for the better part of the year, and now he's set to return home for sure.

Penick's Analysis: This is fantastic confirmation for a fight we've been expecting. St-Pierre's return has been long-awaited, and this fight with Condit should be a fantastic event. After a string of really negative news in the last couple of weeks, it's nice to have something to truly look forward to, and St-Pierre's return is just that.

Jon Jones' camp fine with Anderson Silva rooting for Vitor Belfort at UFC 152

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JonesJones_180_75.jpg
This week in Brazil, Anderson Silva expressed his support for Vitor Belfort against his friend Jon Jones, telling a Brazilian media outlet that he was pulling for his fellow Brazilian at UFC 152.

Jones' manager, Malki Kawa, responded to the comments in an interview with ESPN.com, and said their camp doesn't hold any ill will towards the Middleweight Champ for his thoughts.

"Anderson isn't saying anything bad about Jon,” Kawa said. “The heritage thing is taken into account and that's fine. I understand that."

“Anderson is a really good dude. He's always been really good to Jon. And Jon has always had a really good relationship with him. It should not affect anything."

Penick's Analysis: Silva's comments really were innocuous, and weren't likely to cause any rift between the two camps, but they did represent a tinge of hope for those wanting to see the two champions square off. Considering they've both said their friendship is in play for why they're not interested in a super fight, having something said that could have damaged that would open the door to that fight in the future. For now, there's nothing to see here, and Jones won't be taking offense to Silva rooting for his countryman.

Chad Mendes facing up to six months behind bars for battery

UFC featherweight Chad Mendes doesn’t currently have a bout booked but it looks like he does of a time and place for his next fight, albeit one he’ll be waging inside a California courtroom rather than the cage. Mendes has been formally charged with battery relating to a July 29 incident where he is alleged to have sucker-punched an individual.

If found guilty, the 27-year old could end up paying a $2,000 fine and having to spend up to six months in jail. He will be arraigned on September 19.

A More Detailed Report of Mendes’ Run In with the Law

Mendes narrowly avoided arrest last month after authorities responded to a call involving a large-scale bar fight in the featherweight’s hometown of Hanford, California. Though not one of the main culprits, Mendes refused to leave the scene and is then said to have struck one of the business’ patrons as he fled through the establishment’s back door. He was pursued by police for further questioning but managed to escape on foot.

No comment has come from Mendes on the matter though his legal team has denied the accuracy of the story being circulated by country officials.

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?

Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?

Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.

The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.

Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.

"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.

"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."

Dan Henderson's knee: And here we come to the real culprit behind the cancellation of UFC 151. How dare you become injured when training in a brutal, dangerous sport, knee?

Canada: Always blame Canada.

Bellator 73 Highlights (Video)

With the dust settling from an explosive card this past Friday night in Tunica, Mississippi, Bellator has released a highlight reel of the MTV2 main card. With fantastic performances from headliner Attila Vegh and co-headliner Marcos Galvao, the reel had plenty to show and nearly made people forget that featherweight champion Pat Curran had to exit the card a few weeks ago. The “Summer Series” finale may mark the end of Bellator’s summer shows, but the promotion will return to action a month from now for the start of their new season at Bellator 74.

Dan Henderson: “Chael might’ve done okay in the first round…”

Seasoned scrapper Dan Henderson has the utmost respect for Chael Sonnen. The two have worked closely together for years and spilled buckets of sweat alongside one another at the Team Quest training center. That being said Henderson is also a realist who has a good mind for MMA given his extensive experience with the sport and is rarely if ever afraid to offer up an honest opinion.

On that note, Henderson was recently asked about Sonnen’s chances against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones without a proper camp in place, as would have been the case this weekend had “Bones” accepted a proposed bout with Sonnen in place of the injured Henderson, and responded on the matter without a hint of bias involved.

“Chael might’ve done okay in the first round, maybe take Jon Jones down and then probably run out of gas pretty quickly,” said Henderson on The MMA Hour. “Being out of shape, for Chael to take Jon Jones down would require probably a little more energy than to bounce around the cage and exchange punches with him. So I think he definitely would’ve needed a little bit more gas than sitting on the couch for six weeks would give him.”

The former PRIDE/Strikeforce title-holder also dismissed the idea he’d informed Sonnen about the status of his injured knee weeks before telling the UFC as a way to let Sonnen start prepping for a potential go at Jones.

“My guys told me that (Jones’ coach) said in an interview that Chael was down training with me and getting ready for the fight and knew I was hurt. It was nothing like that at all. He wasn’t even down here. I asked him if he wanted to come down and help me train a couple months ago, but he didn’t come down,” explained Henderson.

Though sidelined for an undetermined amount of time while healing up from a torn MCL, Henderson has remained hopeful he’ll still get his shot at Jones – or potentially Vitor Belfort depending on how he fares against the champ in a few weeks – before the calendar rolls over into 2013.

“Whatever I need to do, I just want to fight,” stated Henderson frankly. “I think myself and the fans would like to see me have that title fight, especially against Jon Jones, the fight everyone was kind of hoping to see. We’ll see what happens, but I just want to get back in there and fight.”

LL Cool J, rapper, actor and Jackson’s MMA student, stops break-in

LL Cool J, the actor and rapper, recently stopped by Jackson's MMA, the gym that trains Jon Jones, Donald Cerrone, Clay Guida and many more UFC stars. According to a tweet from Jackson's MMA, he worked out there before a show in New Mexico. It turns out that workout came in handy when his Los Angeles-area home was broken into.

According to the Los Angeles Times, LL Cool J, whose full name is James Todd Smith, was upstairs when he heard a noise in the kitchen. He fought with the burglar, who suffered a broken jaw in the scuffle. Smith then controlled the burglar until police arrived.

There is no word as to whether Smith's mama told her son to knock the burglar out.

Chael vs Forrest who you got?

I know they've already fought, and Forrest triangled him. But that was I don't know how many years ago that was.

I say Chael beats Forrest, he looked like shit against Tito. Honestly I think Chael might be better in the striking, the wrestlings a given. Forrest is alright, but I see Sonnen picking up the UD.

Father of Wanderlei Silva killed in car crash

Sad news from Curitiba, Brazil. Holando Piniero da Silva, the father of MMA veteran and all-around good guy Wanderlei Silva, died in a head-on car collision. Silva left his camp in Las Vegas to head to Brazil for his father's funeral services.

Silva recently released video from a visit with his family in Brazil. His father talked about how his son is the pride of Brazil, and beamed as he introduced his entire family to the camera.

"I learned a lot from my dad, even with our hectic life. My father worked three jobs. My parents lived for us," Wanderlei said. "The biggest lesson is that we can achieve anything through hard work and honesty."

Ramsey Nijem paired with Joe Proctor at UFC on FOX 5

After stumbling against Tony Ferguson in the finals of TUF 13, lightweight Ramsey Nijem has looked incredibly sharp en route to racking up back-to-back victories inside the Octagon. This December he’ll get a chance to make in a true winning streak when he faces fellow TUF alum Joe Proctor at UFC on FOX 5.

Their bout was confirmed this week by UFC brass. The December 8 event is scheduled to take place in Seattle and will feature lightweight champion Benson Henderson putting his belt on the line against Nate Diaz.

UFC on FOX 5 the Perfect Storm for Network Television

Nijem made an impression on TUF with his personality as well as his promise, showing a slick submission game along with solid wrestling and improving hands. He holds an overall record of 6-2 with an even split between wins involving tap-outs, TKOs, and decisions.

Meanwhile, the 8-1 Proctor has come out of four straight fights with his hand raised including his official Octagon debut at the Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale.

The Fighting Farm Women of Guerrero, Mexico

http://www.vice.com/read/mexican-fem...ource=vicefbus

In May of every year, farmers from La Esperanza—a Nahua village in the state of Guerrero, Mexico—prepare their land for seeding. The fields are ploughed and the seeds germinated, but it's common local knowledge that the rain to grow the crops won't arrive without a little extra seduction. So, while the farmers outfit their land, the rest of the villagers begin preparing a ceremony to ask for rain.

The basis of this quaint little ceremony involves women from a few of the local communities beating the living **** out of each other so that they can collect the spilt blood in buckets and use it to plough and water the land. Real gentle, spiritual stuff.

Following the promotion's Friday show in Tunica, Miss., Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said the company plans to expand its horizons in the United States - and eventually wants to take the show to Brazil.

Bellator 73 took place at Harrah's Tunica Hotel and Casino in Mississippi and was the promotion's debut in that state and its 72nd overall event after launching in April 2009.

Wanderlei Silva, Sarah Kaufman, Tyrone Mims: The Morning News Roundup – 8.13.12

One fighter should be riding off into the sunset, one fighter has the biggest fight of her career coming up, and one fighter was taken from us too soon.  It's a mixed bag of news in today's roundup, so come, grab your cup of joe (or java, or mud, or whatever it is you coffee drinkers imbibe) and join me.  I brought bagels!

  • UFC president Dana White says that Wanderlei Silva — the legendary Brazilian fighter and PRIDE FC champ — will fight again.  Hooray… I guess?  Look, I love the "Axe Murderer" as much as the next guy, and watching some of his old fights is akin to watching a snuff film where the participants wear four-ounce gloves and fight shorts.  But it's an undeniable fact that the man has gotten old and is nowhere near the killer he once was.  Remember what happened when he fought Quinton Jackson?  Or Chris Leben?  I don't want to see something like that again.  Do you?  I say give him an executive position in the UFC's Brazil office and let him smile and shake hands and stuff.

  • Female bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey is headlining a Strikeforce this weekend, and of course you're going to be inundated with all sorts of things pertaining to her (she is the "new" face of women's MMA, after all).  So, for the sake of balance and yin and yang and whatnot, here's some Sarah Kaufman stuff.  She is challenging Rousey for her belt, you know.

  • As I hinted at yesterday, a fighter died at an amateur MMA event in South Carolina on Saturday night.  His name was Tyrone Mims.  This was Mims' first fight, and it was fully-sanctioned and under the auspices of South Carolina State Athletic Commission.  The cause of death won't be known until an autopsy is performed (one is scheduled), but according to onsite accounts, it didn't appear as if Mims took an inordinate amount of damage in his bout, which has led to speculation that a pre-existing condition could've been a contributing factor.  What sort of medical screening do amateur fighters go through?  It varies by state — in New York or South Dakota, a person can step into the cage after signing a waiver and maybe getting a quick look-over by a doctor, while in South Carolina you need the standard bloodwork done (HIV, Hepatitis B and C), an eye exam and the thumbs-up from a physician.  Regardless of what pre-fight screening Mims went through, though, it's still a tragedy that he lost his life.  He stepped into the cage and took part in a sport we all love; let's honor him by never forgetting and by striving to make our sport better.

That's all for now.  Today's the last day of my temp gig here at Cagewriter, but you can expect at least one more post from me, so you can post your parting insults there.

Brendan Schaub battling Lavar Johnson at UFC on FOX 5

It looks like MMA fans have been guaranteed at least one knockout on December 8 when the UFC returns to network television for UFC on FOX 5, as a bout between heavyweight sluggers Brendan Schaub and Lavar Johnson has been added to the Seattle-bound show. Both men are known for their hard-hitting ways and have racked up 22 strike-based stoppages in 25 total victories.

The match-up has been confirmed by UFC officials. Other bouts scheduled for the card include BJ Penn-Rory MacDonald and Alexander Gustafsson-Mauricio Rua, as well as the headlining lightweight title-fight between Benson Henderson-Nate Diaz.

Though he’s struggled to find success in his last two outings, Schaub holds an overall record of 8-3 including wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Filipovic.

Schaub: “Just being tough isn’t gonna get you to the belt.”

On the other side of things, Johnson is 17-6 with a 2-1 run inside the Octagon featuring knockouts of Pat Barry and Joey Beltran since coming over to the organization from Strikeforce.

‘Cyborg’ Santos wants her shot at Ronda Rousey

Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey will attempt to defend her belt on Saturday against Sarah Kaufman. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the former featherweight champ, would like the next shot at Rousey.

"I really wanna fight Ronda," she said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I really want to. She says bad things about me. I never say bad things about my opponent. I want to do my best in the octagon, and if she says she wants to fight me, she can come to my weight or at 140."

Of course, there are a few problems with this potential matchup. For one, Santos is suspended through mid-December. Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has shown reluctance in setting up fights for suspended fighters in the past because there is too much risk. Promoting a fight on the hopes a fighter can get a license is just begging for trouble.

Secondly, why would Rousey move up? It's Santos making the challenge. If she wants to fight Rousey, she should drop down to 135 -- and therein lies the problem. Santos has never weighed in lower than 135. For her bout with Hitomi Akano, she weighed in 7 pounds over. Don't expect 135 to happen. Rousey competed in the Olympics at 154 pounds and has fought at featherweight, but has been so comfortable at bantamweight that she won the belt there.

Do you think Rousey should move up to fight Santos? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Jon Jones: “Coming up to heavyweight is something I’d like to do maybe in the next two or three years.”

As spectacular as it has been to watch UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones ascend from highly-touted prospect to pound-for-pound great, the 25-year old’s unmatched success has also left the 205-pound division in a situation where legitimate contenders are hard to come by.

If Jones comes out on top against Dan Henderson at UFC 151 he will have essentially dominated the entire weight-class minus one or two potential challengers like Alexander Gustafsson or Glover Teixeira. Fortunately, “Bones” already as a plan in mind if such a scenario unfolds – move up to face bigger foes.

“I’ve put thought into it and, like I said, not to be cliché, but Dan Henderson is my main priority and focus, but I have a lot of years left in fighting,” explained Jones in an interview with Fuel TV. “Coming up to heavyweight is something I’d like to do maybe in the next two or three years. 2013 or 2014, it would be cool.”

Jones Signs Endorsement Deal with Nike

As a physical specimen standing 6’4” (with the same reach as 6’11” heavyweight Stefan Struve), there’s no doubt Jones could very well deliver on his dream down the road. Fortunately, for the current crop of heavyweights that is, he still has some business to handle at 205-pounds starting on September 1 when he faces Henderson.

Check out the complete interview with Jones below:
