The Private Message that Went Awry

So, there was this girl I had accepted a friend request from, a girl I didn't actually remember from high school, who would post really clever things and seemed to be a devoted wife and mother. I admired her. Via facebook, we became friends, meaning we'd comment on eachothers status updates. She even posted a hilariously risque' photo on my wall once.

So, one day she asked me, within the body of one of my status updates, if I remembered who she was. I didn't. She told me she would send me a private message. This is what followed, virtually unedited. I hope you enjoy. I invite comments.

Her:
I worked at the drug store in high school.... You came in, we hung out & slept together!:-P lol..... You lived in an apartment in Desoto at the time. Hahaha! Small world, huh? :-) I've wondered for months if you made the connection !:-

Me:
Hmmm...I'm leaving here in a moment; unavoidable. I owe you a long, long inbox message. Wow, though!

Her:
Ahahahahaha... Love it! & you owe nothing.... I just think it's hilarious:-)

Me:
Where to begin? This really is so big for me. Maybe to you, with the limited capacity one would expect that you have to know why, this is having a surprisingly profound impact on me.
This really has been a memorable month, and particularly unusual day; a great one, though, but that's because I'm equipped with perspective and I'm merry! It's one for the ages, that's for sure. Maybe this is why such a surprising thing as finding out who you are feels this way. Maybe not.

So fasten your seatbelts. I'm going to take you on a ride. There will be fun. There's going to be an apology in there; better than the one coming up. I do want to tell you, though, I really mean this next one.

I am sorry.

I ask that you be my muse.

Wrestling: CM Punk backhands fan during WWE Monday Night Raw

Pro wrestling is to MMA what the McRib is to slow-cooked Memphis barbecue, but every once in awhile, pro wrestling gets a little too real.

On Monday night in Sacramento, WWE wrestler CM Punk apparently went off-script during a sequence with WWE chairman Vince McMahon and backhanded a fan in the stands. The initial assumption is that it was staged — even a heart attack, is initially suspect — but a WWE statement released Tuesday afternoon to Yahoo! Sports makes it clear this was not part of the show:

"During last night's Raw televised event, WWE Superstar CM Punk exited the ring into the stands as part of the show. WWE security was unfortunately not in the appropriate place at the time. Given CM Punk's persona as a 'bad guy,' fans were naturally heckling him, but unfortunately a few fans began shoving him and one struck in him in the kidney and on the back. WWE regrets that proper security measures were not in place, and CM Punk apologizes for reacting in the heat of the moment. Other than this isolated incident, WWE always provides proper security to ensure the safety of our fans and our performers."

Amateur video of the event shows that Punk just flat-out lost his temper with fans badgering him. And, as is so often the case in these audience brawls, Punk apparently went after the wrong guy.

Laura Cole, a Sacramento CBS reporter, sought out the fan whom Punk decked. According to Cole's Twitter feed, the fan "says he never hit Punk," and that "his face is a little warm. … He also says Punk broke his glasses." Cole further noted that the fan was filing paperwork with local law enforcement.

So what went wrong here? As you can see in the above video, Punk was almost completely swarmed by fans in the stands. Still, he's got to figure that at a wrestling match, people might just be a little hyped up. So, yes, while a lack of WWE security might have played a role, fundamentally it's on Punk to keep in control.

More on this as it develops.

Rampage Jackson says “Give me Forrest!”

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson recently sat down with Bas Rutten from Inside MMA to answer fan questions from Facebook.

Jackson’s next bout is expected to be against the fast-rising Glover Teixeira. Jackson and Teixeira were scheduled as the co-main event for UFC 153 but Rampage had to withdraw after suffering an injury. Now, Jackson learns that Teixeira is facing a possible six month medical suspension following his recent win over Fabio Maldonado at UFC 152.

Jackson last fought in February and he doesn’t appear willing to wait to Teixeira. He began calling for a rematch against Forrest Griffin saying that is the fight that everyone wants to see. Griffin defeated Jackson by unanimous decision at UFC 86 in 2008 to win the light heavyweight title. Griffin is already scheduled to face Phil Davis at UFC 155. In classic Jackson fashion he states that the Griffin-Davis fight is going to be boring…no disrespect to anyone.

Jackson also shares some good stuff on his fights with Kevin Randleman and Ricardo Arona.

If not Teixeira or Griffin then who is next for Rampage?

A Stranger in a Strange Land

It was in August of last year when Tom Gallicchio decided he needed a change.  So, like many before him, he packed up his things and left, eschewing the daily comforts familiarity brings for a new life, a new setting, and a new world of possibilities.  What makes Tom story different is that he's a fighter by trade, a fighter who exchanged his native New Jersey for the sunnier skies of Murrieta, CA, and the training prospects available.  In other words, Tom moved so he could join Team Quest.

You know Team Quest as the place where the legendary Dan Henderson trains, the place where Chael Sonnen gets in occasional workouts and where at any given time UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator fighters like Yushin Okami, Ed Herman, Tarec Saffiedine and Tyson Nam can be seen getting their spar on.  But it's also a kind of mecca for the aspiring, or — as is the case with Tom — for accomplished dudes keen on taking things to the next level.  In that regard, it's similar to Greg Jackson's camp, or American Top Team, or Xtreme Couture, or wherever else people trek to like pugilistic pilgrims eager to worship at the altar of combat.  Tom is one of those pilgrims.

Snapshot of Tom: his first fight was in 2006, and in the span of 12 years, he's amassed a 16-8 record fighting mostly in the Northeast.  He was Ring of Combat's welterweight champ, a Battle Cage Xtreme champ, and when M-1 Global held a tournament in the States, he won it, defeating three opponents in the process.  He's fought in Russia, fought on Showtime, and battered Igor Gracie for three full rounds.  He's always been sort of a wrestler-face puncher hybrid, and if he's got a signature move — a finishing technique or "go to" that he most frequently pulls out of his bag of tricks — it's taking an opponent's back and sinking the choke (he's won nine bouts that way).  He's also, for one reason or another, never been able to burst through the invisible ceiling that's hovered over him.

"I had the opportunity to train out of a more prestigious and bigger facility, with more experienced coaches," says Tom on why he made the move across the country.  "Honestly, I kind of felt that I was going stale where I was at.  Especially being with the hometown distractions, and knowing too many people.  I just felt that the coaching staff was a lot better at one of these bigger camps than at one of the local camps.  I was at a good local camp, but I really had to step up my game if I wanted to make it to the next level and pursue my goals."

Prior to the move, Tom was a Jersey Shore denizen, training with UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino's crew.  How does Tom get along with his new team?  "The whole team is great," he says.  "I mostly hang out with my team, and they're kind of all in the same boat.  One of the fighters is from Alaska, my roommate is from Wisconsin, a buddy here is from France… we got a lot of French people, actually.  Our Muay Thai coach was the head of the French national team, so he came down, and Cyrille Diabate comes down — I guess they're a tight-knit group.  We just had the Bellator champ, Christian M'Pumbu down, getting ready.  You get all walks of life, and even a few locals here and there."  He adds, "I live with some pretty good fighters.  My buddy Sam Alvey is on this season of 'The Ultimate Fighter'."

How many of the fighters there have traveled from distant locales to train at Team Quest?  "I would say half.  Maybe even a little bit more than half."

For a lifelong resident of the Garden State, transplanting to California can mean quite a bit of culture shock.  "It's a lot different," he says.  "I hear there's a thing called 'California time', and that's where everybody's a little late.  The weather's a lot nicer, so that's nice...  It's definitely a lot different, but overall it's the same.  You see the same chain restaurants, same places everywhere."

How's the food in California?  "The Italian sucks, the Mexican is good.  You get great Mexican food, but you won't get a good bagel, or pizza."

To pay the bills, Tom bounces at a local bar, and when he can, he helps out with the kids' class at Team Quest.  "I don't even have a car out here," he says.  "I have a little scooter I ride around."

Of course, it hasn't been all smooth sailing since Tom made the move.  He tore his meniscus checking a kick in training, which required coming back to the East Coast for rehab and downtime, and he's had trouble finding fights.  "For a while, with my experience, people were saying no," he says.  "Especially since I have to fight back at the local shows again.  There's not a lot of guys that have 24 professional fights at local shows."

Still, as grim as things were when Tom was injured, things have started looking up.  He's since fully recovered, and an opponent has agreed to fight him at an upcoming King of the Cage event, and another has agreed for a show after that.

"I want to just keep moving forward and keep moving up the ranks," he says.  "I had a slump and I want to get out of it, so I'm taking it one fight at a time.  But I don't want to say no to tough fights, either.  I'll take all bets."

"It's nice to have everything in one facility and not have to go to several different locations — to a boxing coach, to conditioning place, to a jiu-jitsu guy," says Tom, reiterating his motivation for moving.  "That's one of the reasons I went to a place that had it all."

Years ago, when the sport was much younger, what Tom has done would be considered something of a phenomenon.  But times have changed.  Where once it was unique that Jens Pulver had moved to Iowa to train with Pat Miletich, or that Forrest Griffin had ditched Georgia and Amir Sadollah had bailed on Virginia for Las Vegas, it's become more commonplace.

Does Tom ever miss New Jersey, the place he'd called home for most of his life?  "I miss my family," he says, "and certain friends, but no.  When I was in New Jersey [rehabbing], I couldn't wait to come back and train."

Hopefully, for Tom — a stranger in the strange land that lacks decent Italian food and bagels — the move to California and Team Quest will pay off.

Rashad Evans likely fighting Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in February

Two of the finest light heavyweights to ever grace the ring have been linked to a meeting over Super Bowl Weekend in the form of a fight between Rashad Evans-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Evans is a former UFC champion with wins over a number of notable foes, while Nogueira built his reputation as a winner in PRIDE and has experienced similar success since turning his attention to the Octagon.

Though the upcoming show has not been officially announced it is likely to take place on February 2 in Las Vegas.

News of the match-up was first reported by SporTV and has been confirmed by other sites since.

Evans is coming off a decision loss to current title-holder Jon Jones, seeing a four-fight winning streak snapped in the process as well. The Ultimate Fighter 2 winner has racked up a 17-2-1 record over his career including success against the likes of Tito Ortiz, Forrest Griffin, Phil Davis, and Quinton Jackson.

“Sugar” ‘Shad Still Interested in Eventual Move to Middleweight

The 20-5 Nogueira hasn’t fought since stopping Ortiz with strikes last December. He also holds past wins over Vladimir Matyushenko, Dan Henderson, and Alistair Overeem.

UFC champion Junior dos Santos thinks he could beat boxing great Wladimir Klitschko

It’s been a long-standing belief that a top Mixed Martial Artist could easily defeat the world’s best boxer in a MMA fight with the same being true in reverse were a UFC champion to head over to test himself in the sweet science. However, UFC heavyweight title-holder Junior dos Santos is confident he could prove that statement to be false.

Dos Santos was recently asked for his thoughts on how he might fare against boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko and, rather than give the talented Russian his due, “Cigano” offered up a surprising prediction.

“I could beat that guy, man. Maybe not easy, but I could knock him out,” said Dos Santos in an interview with the Associated Press. “I watch a lot of fights with Wladimir, and I see a lot of holes.”

The 28-year old Dos Santos is seen as one of the best boxers in MMA, blending technique and power unlike many of his peers. He holds a 15-1 record with eleven strike-based stoppages. By comparison, Klitschko – who owns every heavyweight belt of note in boxing – is 58-3 with 51 knockouts.

Regardless of how they might match up, Dos Santos made it clear he has no interest in actually giving boxing a shot, stating, “I love who I am, and I want to stay in MMA. Boxing is going down.”

Dos Santos Aiming for Another KO in his Next Fight

The Brazilian’s next bout is scheduled for December 29 where he will put his gold on the line against Cain Velasquez. Meanwhile, Klitschko is set to scrap on November 10 against Mariusz Wach.

Chris Weidman’s house decimated by Hurricane Sandy

The sport of MMA may not have a home in New York yet but a number of Mixed Martial Artists do including unbeaten UFC middleweight Chris Weidman. Over the past few days, Weidman found himself in the same position as millions of East Coasters who were caught in the wrath of Hurricane Sandy.

While many folks were merely inconvenienced by the mega-storm, Weidman wasn’t so lucky. According to the Long Island native, his house suffered an enormous amount of damage though he and his family escaped unscathed.

“First floor, garage, backyard, (and) deck all pretty much destroyed. We lost a lot of stuff but as long as we are healthy that’s all that matters. I actually documented a lot through video and pics. We had water up to my chest in some parts of my house,” stated Weidman in a text to MMAFighting.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to have done $5-$10 billion in damage based on early estimates and is considered to have been one of the five worst hurricanes in the nation’s history.

Weidman is currently scheduled to face Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 in late December.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum to Coach ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2′

UFC Heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

According to Brazilian website GloboEsporte, former UFC heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictured) and Fabricio Werdum will serve as opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2.”

If the report holds true, this would mark Nogueira’s second stint on the reality show. Big Nog lead Ryan Bader and Efrain Escudero to six-figure UFC contracts on TUF 8.

In regards to his day job, Nogueira has alternated between wins and losses over his past seven scraps. He was last seen submitting Dave Herman at UFC 153 in front of his Brazilian brethren.

Wedrum is victorious in both of his Octagon bouts since returning to the UFC. The former Strikeforce star made his claim to fame by snapping Fedor Emelianenko’s 27-fight winning streak in June 2010.

Light heavyweights Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had also campaigned for the mentoring gigs, but it appears UFC officials decided to go in a different direction.

The third international installment of the long-running reality series features lightweight and welterweight hopefuls.

This marks the second time TUF has taken its talents to jiu jitsu country. Rony “Jason” and Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira claimed their respective tournaments in the inaugural season of “TUF: Brazil.” Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort served as rival coaches.

Donate to Bellator fighter Brian Rogers’ Fund a Fighter campaign, see your name on TV

Bellator fighter Brian Rogers would like your help. He is fighting at Bellator 78 on Oct. 26, and is running a fun contest on Fund A Fighter, a website that encourages fans to make donations large and small to a fighter's camp. In return, fighters give away merchandise, fight experiences and other cool stuff.

Rogers is adding a twist to his campaign. Half of the money raised through his campaign will go to Leap, a special education program Rogers used to work for. He recently quit his job as a special education teacher to focus on fighting full-time, and talks about what more technology for the students would do here:

The biggest donor over the course of this week will get the chance to have his or her name written on Rogers' sponsor banner. The banners are unrolled during a fighter's introduction, and it would be really fun to see a Cagereader's name on that banner.

Here's what to do: go to FundAFighter.com and make a donation for Rogers' campaign. He has a ton of goodies listed for donors, so even if you can't make a huge donation, a small one can still help Rogers and Leap.

Japanese MMA promotion DREAM has been resurrected, as Glory Sports International, owners of kickboxing promotion Glory World Series, has overtaken the organization and will be presenting a New Year's Eve event at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

GSI announced the acquisition and planned event on Thursday. GSI is taking over production of the event, running it as their own event with the DREAM name. Top DREAM fighters Hiroyuki Takaya, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Satoru Kitaoka have all been confirmed for the event, and GSI revealed that there will be 10 MMA bouts and three kickboxing matches presented on the card.

"We are very fond of the DREAM brand and the company's world-class production team. The GSI team is passionate about Japanese MMA and is intent on restoring it to prominence," said Pierre Andurand, chairman of Glory Sports International. "The DREAM 18 event on New Year's Eve is a first step towards this goal."

"New Year’s Eve is traditionally the high point of the martial arts calendar in Japan, and DREAM has staged superb events at Saitama for the past four years. This year, GLORY will be taking over presentation of the event and you will see a better production than ever before. Fans worldwide can expect a spectacular show."

“Rampage” Jackson turned down chance to coach against Chael Sonnen on TUF 17

Light heavyweight Quinton Jackson may not like what Chael Sonnen represents as a fighter but he’s apparently unwilling to take it a step further by facing the outspoken grappler inside the Octagon. Recently Jackson and UFC President Dana White confirmed the 34-year old former champion turned down a chance to back up some tough talk criticizing Sonnen’s skill level by coaching against him on TUF 17 before eventually mixing it up in the cage.

The gig ultimately went to champion Jon Jones who will face Sonnen in late April.

“I don’t want to fight Chael. He’s the kind of fighter that I don’t want to fight. He’s a boring fighter that just wants to hump people,” said Jackson in an interview with MMAFighting after initially revealing his decision to decline a match-up with Sonnen.

“Rampage” Wants to Fight Forrest Griffin

Jackson is currently waiting to test out free agency after getting in the final bout on his deal with the UFC. He was expected to take on Glover Teixeira earlier this month but withdrew due to injury.

Quinton Jackson: "Fighters like Chael Sonnen are ruining the sport."

Former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton Jackson is quickly getting sick of the antics of Chael Sonnen. Jackson has always been direct when questions are asked of him, and now that everyone and their brother knows his next bout will almost certainly be his last fight in the promotion, he is somehow being more straightforward. In the wake of Sonnen moving up to the light heavyweight division and skipping to the front of the contendership line despite no success to back it up, Jackson has had enough.

“His mouth gets his him fights,” Jackson said on Inside MMA. “The dude is exciting for like two minutes, but then you just wanna turn down the volume, like, ‘What the hell you talkin’ about?’”

“He sounds like he practices his stuff in the mirror, and then he goes out and says it,” Jackson quipped.

As for Jackson’s thoughts of Sonnen inside the Octagon, “Rampage” was tight-lipped with any compliments to say the least, stating, “He’s a great wrestler. That’s all I’m gonna say, ‘cuz everything else sucks. He can’t punch hard. Look what he did to Anderson Silva. He did a great job holding him down, making a boring fighter out of a decorated champion, for five rounds. After the fight, I see that Anderson Silva didn’t have a mark on him. Not a mark.”

“Rampage” Wants to Go Out of the UFC on his Terms

Jackson  has never shied away from smack-talking in his career, and fans shouldn’t expect him to stop doing it, but he feels Sonnen takes it too far.

“I talk trash, but I talk trash about people I’m actually gonna fight…people in my weight class. This guy, he talks trash about ring girls. He talks trash about the President. Now, that’s a little bit too much. He’s very disrespectful. I don’t like the guy. For real,” he concluded. “The stuff he says about me. I like to joke around as much as anybody, but, for real, if I see Chael Sonnen, and he says anything to my face, I don’t know if I’m gonna smack him or not. I don’t know. I don’t like the guy.”

With one fight on his contract left, all signs point to Jackson fighting Glover Teixeira to finish off the deal, as both have publicly said they would take the fight.  “Rampage” is looking to rebound from his first losing streak of his UFC career and is anxious to put his February loss to Ryan Bader behind him.

“Losing to a guy like Ryan Bader has lit a fire under my ass. I’m getting back in the gym and working on my new skills. My main focus is to destroy Glover Teixeira. It’s the last fight on my contract, and I’m gonna destroy Glover, then I’m gonna put my deuces up,” Jackson  said.  “There’s no love lost with the UFC. They’re a great company. They’re doing great things for the sport, but I just don’t think they’re doing great things for me.”

“Glover’s a tough guy. I like his fighting style. He’s a jiu jitsu guy, but he throws it. I respect fighters like him. I think the UFC and MMA needs more fighters like him. Fighters like Chael Sonnen are just ruining the sport, taking people down and just humping on them,” Jackson added, showing no ill will towards Teixeira. “Fighters like Glover can save MMA.”

Former UFC Commentator Jeff Blatnick Passes Away at Age 55

http://www.mmaweekly.com/former-ufc-...away-at-age-55

Former Olympic gold medalist and UFC commentator Jeff Blatnick passed away on Wednesday following complications after having heart surgery.

Blatnick was 55 years of age at the time of his passing.

A gold medalist in wrestling in 1984, Blatnick was one of the first Americans to ever capture the gold in the Greco-Roman category.

In 1994, Blatnick joined the UFC as a color commentator and advisor, where he continued to work for the next 7 years. His last show with the promotion was UFC 32 in June, 2001.

Blatnick helped develop some of the unified rules of MMA still used in competition today, and eventually he became a licensed judge and referee with the New Jersey State Athletic Commission.

A staple of the wrestling community as well, Blatnick worked closely with young athletes, and coached at the high school level up until his passing on Wednesday.

Blatnick is survived by his wife and two children.

Shane Carwin vs. Roy Nelson Betting Odds

UFC Shane Carwin

“The Ultimate Fighter 16″ might not be moving the needle for the UFC like the reality show’s first few editions, but at least there is a genuine beef brewing between this season’s opposing coaches that has made things a tad more interesting.

Speaking of making things more interesting, the Gambling Gods have released the early betting lines for Shane Carwin (Pictured) and Roy Nelson’s impending shootout.

Despite riding the pine since June 2011 due to back surgery, Carwin is pegged as nearly a 2-to-1 odds-on favorite to beat Nelson.

“Big Country,” meanwhile, checks in just behind as a +150 underdog.

The heavyweights will collide December 15th inside The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Here are the early wagering lines for the TUF 16 coaches (Courtesy of BetUS):

Anderson camp seeking a superfight with GSP

Quote:

10:48PM EDT October 23. 2012 - What's next for Anderson Silva? He's got options, but there's one his longtime manager thinks is best.

Ed Soares believes it may be time to settle the long-running discussion of who the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world is – UFC middleweight champion Silva or welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.

In a Monday interview with "Inside MMA" on AXS TV, Soares said he'd like to see a Silva vs. St-Pierre superfight as his client's next fight.

"At the end of the day, GSP is the greatest welterweight of all time," Soares said. "People argue back and forth who the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world is. Some people say it's Anderson, some people say it's Georges St-Pierre. So I think the way to settle it is to do a catch weight at 177 1/2, right down the middle, and see what happens.

"I think it'll be a fight that the fans want to see and it'll be a great fight."

Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC) is coming off a first-round TKO win over Stephan Bonnar in a light heavyweight fight in the main event of UFC 153 earlier this month. The win kept him unbeaten in the UFC and was his third first-round knockout in fights at 205 pounds.

St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) is getting ready to come back from a 19-month layoff. He returns next month in a title unification fight against interim champ Carlos Condit (28-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at UFC 154 in front of his home fans in Montreal.

If St-Pierre gets past Condit – he is a better than 3-to-1 favorite with oddsmakers – there has been widespread speculation that the UFC would try to make a fight between the two most dominant champions in the company and two of its biggest pay-per-view draws.

In fact, UFC President Dana White believes such a fight would be perfect for Cowboys Stadium in Dallas – where the promotion would have the potential to break its own North American attendance record of 55,000, which it set the last time St-Pierre fought at UFC 129 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

But White also has another potential mega-fight in mind for Silva at some point, and that is against light heavyweight champ Jon Jones. Really, though, there is little doubt that White and the UFC would be just fine with either option.

"There are so many options for him right now," White said after UFC 153. "He never ceases to amaze. And like he says, there's a lot of talented guys now in that 185-pound division. But as he says, he's at this point in his career where there are some superfights there. The Georges St-Pierre fight is a big fight. I think the Jon Jones fight is a big fight."

An arm injury suffered in his win over Vitor Belfort will keep Jones idle until April, when he'll defend his title against Chael Sonnen after the two coach opposite each other on Season 17 of "The Ultimate Fighter." So that would appear to put a Silva-Jones fight more on the back burner than a possible Silva-GSP bout.

Waiting in the wings, potentially, for St-Pierre is the winner of the UFC 154 co-main event between Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks. For Silva, the options are greater. Michael Bisping remains a long-discussed candidate for a title shot, as does the winner of an upcoming fight between Chris Weidman and Tim Boetsch at UFC 155.

But it sounds like Soares is hoping for a St-Pierre win over Condit, and then a fight with Silva.

"Who knows what's next. Maybe after (a possible fight with St-Pierre), who knows. A possibility it could be (Jon Jones), or maybe even Bisping," Soares said. "There are so many different fighters out there that could potentially be big fights."
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...fight/1653497/

I told you he would duck Jones — who he is naturally closer to in size — to fight GSP instead. One word: PUSSY

TUF 16 Results: Colton Smith wins controversial decision

Yin caught up to yang this week on the Ultimate Fighter 16 when Team Nelson was awarded a controversial decision preventing a third round in a rumble most felt should have gone to the extra frame. Last week the same situation improved Team Carwin’s record to 3-1, though Colton Smith‘s victory over Eddy Ellis this past Friday night certainly narrowed the gap.

Smith was outclassed in the opening stanza, even getting dropped by Ellis’ powerful, precise striking. However, he battled back in the second and dished out a ton of damage. The lopsided nature of the round ultimately influenced things, resulting in some 10-8 scores to hand Smith a Majority Decision nod.

“After the fight, I felt disappointed with my performance. It seemed like I couldn’t find my rhythm, even during the first round I got caught up in the excitement. In the second round, things were still chaotic in my mind. I wasn’t able to settle down and implement my fight,” explained Ellis after the loss, adding that in retrospect he “would have collected myself after catching him, settled down, thought clearly, and finished an obviously hurt opponent.”

“The mood on Team Carwin after my fight was surprisingly lifted not because I had lost but because I had really fought. The first few fights were rather lack-luster so after watching me go out hard and exciting, it made the other guys want to do the same,” he concluded.

Other highlights from the episode included Roy Nelson‘s squad complaining about the level of training being provided, as has been the case in the past, as well as Matt Secor rubbing Michael Hill the wrong way by accusing him of chicken-breast theft.

Quinton Jackson: “Forrest don’t want to fight me again because Forrest knows I beat him the first time.”

For the past few months it has seemed as though Quinton Jackson was destined to dance with Glover Teixeira at some point soon before starting the next chapter of his career as a free agent. The two were booked for a bout at UFC 153, and though it ultimately fell apart when “Rampage” went out with an injury, each expressed interest in making sure the match-up was still going to happen.

However, with news that the rising Brazilian star could be out six months based on damage he sustained in his UFC 153 fight with Fabio Maldonado, Jackson has turned his attention to a new target in hopes of avoiding the need to wait for Teixeira to heal up.

“Give me Forrest Griffin. Why they won’t give me Forrest? Why won’t the UFC give me Forrest? I’ll fight Forrest right now. See, the fans think we get to choose who we fight. Who is Forrest fighting right now? I’m calling my manager right now. I told Dana White I would fight Forrest and Glover the same night,” exclaimed Jackson this week to Inside MMA, saying Griffin’s UFC 155 fight with Phil Davis was going to “be a boring fight”.

“This is why I’m leaving the UFC. I don’t understand what (matchmaker) Joe Silva is doing. Joe Silva has a complex. Something’s wrong with him,” continued the former light heavyweight champion. “The guy can’t match shoes. What kind of matchmaker is this guy? What is he thinking?”

“Give me Forrest! Everybody wants that. That would sell. Everybody want to see me and Forrest fight again. Everybody keeps talking about it. Everybody wants to see that but Forrest. Forrest don’t want to fight me again because Forrest knows I beat him the first time. He knows it, the whole world know it. The only people that think Forrest beat me are haters,” he concluded.

The two originally went toe to toe in July 2008 where Griffin scored a somewhat controversial decision win to take Jackson’s UFC title. “Rampage” has been asking for a rematch ever since, though for whatever reasons the organization has opted to avoid granting his wish.

The full segment with Jackson can be seen below:

With wife expecting, Stephan Bonnar ready to jump on private jet after UFC 153

Though Stephan Bonnar has UFC 153 and Anderson Silva on his mind, he has another concern when he's in Brazil this week. Bonnar's wife Andrea is pregnant and due at the end of the month. Since babies are born on their own schedule and not the UFC's, Bonnar has a contingency plan ready to go for the event Andrea goes into labor earlier than expected.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, UFC president Dana White has offered to fly Bonnar back to his home in Las Vegas immediately after the fight with Silva in his private jet.

Bonnar took White up on his offer, but the Bonnars still have another plan in place, according to TMZ.

Andrea says Stephan plans to video conference in to his wife's birth if he can't make it in time -- but she adds, "We're trying to avoid even thinking about that."

Their son's birth will be forever connected to Bonnar's last-minute fight with Silva. After featherweight champion Jose Aldo's injury threatened UFC 153, Bonnar stepped up to fight Silva, the middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king at light heavyweight.

There is a chance their son will be connected to Bonnar's most famous fight, as well. As Iole also mentioned, Stephan and Andrea are considering naming their son Griffin Bonnar in honor of the Bonnar-Forrest Griffin bout at the first "Ultimate Fighter" finale.

WWE Hell in a Cell 2012 Results: CM Punk retains thanks to referee interference, Big Show becomes champion

The WWE’s annual card featuring caged calamity was back tonight with an extremely interesting lineup topped by WWE Champion CM Punk putting his gold up for grabs in the main event against unbeaten behemoth Ryback. In the WWE Hell in a Cell 2012 headliner, Punk was out to make good on his claim of being “the best in the world” by taking out the much larger man who had his way with the title-holder in recent weeks.

Things looked good for Ryback throughout the bout, even going so far as to “Hulk Up” and recover from an attack with a Kendo Stick, but Punk ultimately emerged with his title-reign in tow after the referee landed a low blow, then dished out a quick-count for the pinfall victory. As might be expected, Ryback reacted poorly to being screwed over, decimating the official and eventually hitting Punk with a “Shell Shock” finisher on top of the cell.

Also scheduled for Hell in a Cell, Sheamus failed in his attempt to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against the Big Show, fighting valiantly before being caught with a K.O. Punch while trying to deliver a Brogue Kick. Both men dished out a ton of damage on the other with each landing a finisher prior to the final sequence leading to the strike-based stoppage.

The surprisingly successful team of Kane/Daniel Bryan each remained the “tag team champion” against the duo of Damien Sandow/Cody Rhodes though by way of disqualification rather than actually defeating their opponents. The end came when Kane decided to beat down Rhodes/Sandow despite not being the legal man in the ring, teasing dissent in the ranks of “Team Hell No”.

A rundown of winners/losers from the evening’s action can be found below:

Randy Orton def. Alberto Del Rio via Pinfall (RKO)

Cody Rhodes/Damien Sandow def. Kane/Daniel Bryan © via Disqualification

Kofi Kingston © def. The Miz via Pinfall to Retain Intercontinental Championship (Trouble in Paradise)

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture believes Strikeforce is approaching its end

Randy_Couture_wide_banner.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The future of Strikeforce as a fight promotion is very much in doubt as 2012 comes to a close. After injuries took out their headlining fights for two straight events, Showtime pulled their plans for televising the events, which in turn caused both events to be canceled.

Though they've publicly stated plans for an event in January, many see it as just a matter of time before the organization is folded entirely. One of those is UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, whose son Ryan has competed in Strikeforce for his entire professional career.

Couture spoke with Spike TV's MMA Uncensored Live on Thursday, and articulated his thoughts on the future of the organization.

"Yeah, there are some questions there," Couture said (transcribed by BloodyElbow.com). "I know the Showtime relationship with Zuffa has been rocky. I know they hoped to renew that relationship and build that relationship, but they weren't able to pull that off. I think you're gonna see the Strikeforce guys absorbed and plucked like they did the WEC."

"So, then the question is, is Ryan gonna be one of those guys they want to keep, or is he gonna be one of those guys that gets cut loose? Where are we gonna go with him? The Showtime contract's up this year, so early next year, I think you'll see something happen."

Penick's Analysis: Couture's on point with his thoughts here. It really seems like just a matter of time before Strikeforce is folded, and it seems like the card planned for January could be one final soiree for the organization. There doesn't seem to be much reason for Showtime to keep television rights for the organization when they're dependent on so few fighters as headliners for their cards, and all of the fighters on roster would be better served to be brought in the UFC or allowed to go elsewhere. As far as Ryan Couture is concerned, he may have done enough through six fights in Strikeforce to get a shot in the UFC, but even if he hasn't, a couple wins outside would surely bring him in. Regardless, it's more than likely time for Strikeforce to be done, and it will be better for all parties involved when that happens.

DREAM 18: “Special New Year’s Eve 2012″ Set for December 31 at Saitama Super Arena

Tatsuya KawajiriIt’s official, DREAM will be holding a New Year’s Eve event at the Saitama Super Arena on December 31. Kickboxing promotion GLORY and head promoter Pierre Andurand have stepped up and invested heavily in making the event happen. Much like the past few years, the bill will be lined with both MMA and kickboxing bouts.

Already confirmed for the night are DREAM Featherweight Champion Hiroyuki Takaya, as well as former title challengers Tatsuya Kawajiri and Satoru Kitaoka. Also rumored for the event is the retirement bout for all-time women’s MMA great Megumi Fujii.

A New Year’s event has been a long-running tradition in Japanese fight culture, dating back to PRIDE and Antonio Inoki’s events. While it remains uncertain as to whether this will be a one-off event or DREAM will continue operations, fans of Japanese MMA can look forward to at least one more rodeo from the promotion. Additional participants will be announced in the coming weeks.
