Fans can add MMA icon Randy Couture to the growing list of individuals who feel Strikeforce’s days are numbered. “The Natural” was recently asked for his informed opinion on the company’s woes, a matter he has some personal investment in as well considering his son Ryan Couture’s spot on the Strikeforce roster.
“I think you’re going to see the Strikeforce guys absorbed and plucked like they did the WEC,” explained the elder Couture in an interview with MMA Uncensored.
Strikeforce recently cancelled their second straight show after injuries and a lack of divisional depth left the cards barren to the point broadcaster Showtime pulled the plug on airing the events. The company is expected to put together a stacked lineup in January with multiple champions scheduled for action, though it’s unclear what will happen to Strikeforce beyond the effort.
Couture refused to speculate beyond his initial remark, though the former champion’s assessment certainly seems logical. Zuffa brought over the likes of Antonio Silva, Nick Diaz, and Alistair Overeem to the UFC shortly after purchasing Strikeforce in March 2011, and UFC President Dana White has also publicly stated his interested in having Gilbert Melendez and Ronda Rousey join the UFC as well.
Regarding his baby boy’s future, Couture things were ultimately up to his son and felt a resolution would be in place in the next few months when his contract expired.
“They’re not gonna do (Ryan) any favors in the UFC,” acknowledged Couture, adding he also felt his son was at the same level as a number of UFC lightweights but still needed to make sure he was ready for a run in the Octagon in case he only gets one shot at success in the infamous eight-sided structure.
