Bellator FC bolstered their light heavyweight ranks this week with the signing of Renato Sobral, a former UFC title-contender who held Strikeforce gold as well. Nicknamed “Babalu”, the Brazilian veteran is expected to make his debut in January on Spike TV as part of the promotion’s Season 8 tournament of 205-pounders.
Sobral’s status was confirmed by a Bellator press release where he said, ““I’m really happy to be a part of the Bellator family. This is my new home, and I can’t wait to get into the tournament. My only wish was that it could all be in one night, but I don’t think we can do that, so I’ll just put one more tournament under my belt, and I’m going to take this opportunity and get my shot at the Bellator World Title.”
The 37-9 Sobral last fought in June, stopping Tatsuya Mizuno with a submission less than a minute into their match-up. The victory, his 24th finish, added to other past instances of success in the cage including those against Robbie Lawler, Chael Sonnen, and Mauricio Rua.
