-Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan welcome everyone to FX and run down the fights coming up on this preliminary card broadcast before discussing tonight's pay-per-view main event. Then it's on to the quick pre-fight video for our first televised fight of the evening.
FIGHT ONE: DUSTIN PAGUE VS. CHICO CAMUS (BANTAMWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Pague pressed forward early as both fighters feinted and tested the range. Camus landed a nice counter right after a jab. They exchanged a few big strikes. Camus caught a kick from Pague and drove him down to the ground. Camus tried to work some ground and pound, then Pague popped up with a triangle choke. Camus tried to defend as Pague continued trying to tighten the hold. Camus had his hand inside, but it left him open to elbows and strikes from Pague from the bottom. Camus continued defending the triangle, but Pague also continued landing strikes from the bottom. Camus finally broke free after staying patient in the hold. He landed some big short forearm strikes and opened a small cut on Pague's head. He landed another hard elbow to the jaw and continued landing strikes. Pague went for an omoplata, but Camus circled out and got back into his guard. He landed a couple more elbows and strikes from the top. Pague continued trying to attack from the bottom, but he was eating strikes as the round came to an end.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Camus. Pague almost stole it with the strikes in the triangle position, but Camus survived the attempt and delivered a lot of blows from top position.
ROUND TWO: Camus landed an early punch. He got a kick in and another right. Pague caught a kick and tripped Camus up, then dropped down into his guard. Camus got up fairly easily, though. Camus landed a jab. Camus landed a good short combo. Camus ducked under a punch and scored a single leg takedown into half guard. Camus landed a few strikes. Camus struggled as he tried to pass. He landed a few big strikes to Pague's head, then passed nicely to side control. Pague regained guard. They traded elbows. Camus landed a hard left. Pague tried to throw his legs up for an attack again, but Camus kept himself out of trouble. Camus landed a couple of hard elbows and short forearm strikes. Pague landed an elbow from the bottom. The crowd booed the action, which didn't make sense as they were both working. Camus continued landing strikes from the top. Pague tried to get to his feet, but Camus got his back standing as they stood. The round ended in that position.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Camus. More of the same from Camus, with less of an attack from Pague. Could be tied up going into the final frame, but Camus is doing a lot more offensively thus far.
ROUND THREE: Pague rushed in and tried to score a takedown. Camus tried to block it, but gave up his back and got dragged down. Pague locked on a body triangle as Camus defended. Pague had positional control, but wasn't doing much with the position as Camus defended well. Camus then exploded to spin out and got into Pague's guard. They traded strikes and Camus passed to half guard. Camus landed a hard elbow. Pague tried to regain guard but Camus kept in half guard. Camus tried to pass to mount but Pague held it off. Camus landed a few big strikes as he continued to work in half guard. Camus again tried to snake his leg out and did a lot of damage as he got to mount. He landed a couple of big strikes. Pague gave up his back and Camus rolled him over looking for the submission. He landed some heel strikes to the thighs. Camus went for a one armed choke, but Pague survived and got to his feet as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Camus. He was in a bad spot for two minutes, but Pague did almost nothing to him in that time, and he controlled the action for the remaining three minutes of the fight. Should be a clear win for Camus in an good UFC debut.
WINNER: Camus via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)
STAR RATING: (**+) That was a really enjoyable ground battle. Pague was attacking from his back for most of it, while Camus did damage from the top, but the fight also had some nice back and forth swings of fortune. Camus took better advantage of things, defended when he needed to, and all around put together a very nice UFC debut performance.
FIGHT TWO: KEN STONE VS. ERIK PEREZ (BANTAMWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Perez opened up with an inside leg kick. Perez then dropped Stone after an exchange. Stone tried to pop up but got clipped by a few big strikes that put him out cold. Another strike brought him back to life as Herb Dean stepped in, and the crowd booed as Stone tried to pop up to continue. It was the right stoppage, and Stone only continued because he was brought back to consciousness by one of the last blows from Perez. Crazy short fight there, though, as Stone had cracked Perez before getting faceplanted.
WINNER: Perez via TKO at :17 of the first round
STAR RATING: (**+) That was the fastest TKO finish in UFC or WEC history in the bantamweight division. Stone cracked Perez with a really big shot right before getting faceplanted, and Dean gave Stone a chance to continue before getting put right back out by Perez. Really impressive stuff from Perez in such a short amount of time.
-With a little time to kill, they run a video on Edgar's background heading into tonight's pay-per-view event.
FIGHT THREE: JARED HAMMAN VS. MICHAEL KUIPER (MIDDLEWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Hamman landed a couple of leg kicks early, along with a few short combos. He got in a good knee to the body as Kuiper tried to walk him down. He continued to land kicks and press Kuiper off of him, though Kuiper kept stalking. Kuiper landed a left. Hamman got in a hard leg kick and avoided a strike. Kuiper connected on a right. Hamman continued throwing short combos and Kuiper blocked many of them. He closed the distance and grabbed a body lock. He pulled off a nice throw but Hamman worked back to his feet. Kuiper held a body lock, but Hamman broke free. Kuiper landed a hard right and Hamman looked a bit wobbly. He landed a left as Kuiper stalked. Kuiper landed a hard leg kick and a flying knee. Kuiper continued to connect with several big strikes. Hamman fought back and landed a couple. Kuiper knocked Hamman down with a rush, but Hamman popped back up. Hamman continued throwing strikes, but Kuiper walkers through them and cracked him with several exchanges. Kuiper pressed in with more strikes. Hamman threw some more lesser strikes, but kept getting hit by bigger strikes from Kuiper. Kuiper landed a couple more big strikes before the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Kuiper. The overall strikes may go to Hamman, but it was Kuiper doing all the damage that round. Good start to the fight.
ROUND TWO: Kuiper landed a hard kick to start the round as Hamman was clearly having issues with his lead leg. Kuiper landed another kick. Hamman connected on a few punches. Kuiper landed a right and a few more kicks to the leg. Hamman landed a few hard strikes. Kuiper then walked through it and landed some big strikes. He knocked Hamman down with another big combination, but Hamman survived and worked to his feet. Kuiper held a body lock, then backed off and landed another huge right. He continued to connet with big strikes as Hamman was barely on his feet. He landed a huge uppercut and Hamman went down hard with the ref coming in to stop it. Hamman was in audible pain with damage done to his left leg. He had a knot in the back of his thigh as his muscle was torn. Nasty, nasty stuff.
WINNER: Kuiper via TKO at 2:16 of the second round
STAR RATING: (**+) Crazy, sloppy battle that should have been stopped much, much sooner than it was. Hamman's corner never should have sent him out there in the second round, and they should have thrown in the towel as he continued getting cracked by massive shots. That's shameful work on their part. Fighters need to be protected from themselves sometimes, and this was absolutely one of them.
-With more time still available, the Facebook bout between Nik Lentz and Eiji Mitsuoka made the broadcast.
-Now it's time for a background video on the Champ, Ben Henderson.
FIGHT FOUR: DENNIS BERMUDEZ VS. TOMMY HAYDEN (FEATHERWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Fairly tentative start from both as they tried to feel out the range. Bermudez landed a couple of short strikes in close as Hayden briefly engaged. Hayden jumped in with a punch. Bermudez grabbed a single leg, then lifted Hayden in the air to score the takedown. Nicely done. Hayden tried to control the posture of Bermudez to sweep, and he managed to work up to his feet. Solid work. Hayden threw a couple of high kicks but they were blocked. He connected on a jab. Bermudez landed a nice left. Hayden then landed a right and shot for a leg. Bermudez stuffed it. Hayden tried to roll through, and then he ate a knee as they got to their feet. Hayden then dropped Bermudez with a standing knee to the jaw. He got Bermudez's back as he was spinning. He tried to transition to an armbar, but Bermudez popped out of it and landed some solid strikes as he passed to half guard. Hayden kicked him off and got back to his feet. Bermudez landed a straight kick to the face. Hayden backed up after taking it, and Bermudez rushed him. He locked on a standing front choke and pressed Hayden back to the cage. Hayden tried to fight it off as the round was coming to an end, but it tightened as a guillotine choke and Hayden had to tap. Excellent finish by Bermudez after nearly losing that round.
WINNER: Bermudez via submission (standing guillotine choke) at 4:43 of the first round
STAR RATING: (***) That was a massively entertaining round. There was some great back and forth action in the early going, then Bermudez got dropped with a huge knee to the jaw from Hayden and had to survive a choke and then armbar attempt to continue on. Then he landed that straight kick and scored the submission win a short time later. Great action, and a great way to close out the FX prelims. Very good preliminary card tonight.
-With plenty of time to kill before the pay-per-view broadcast, the UFC had time to go into the behind the scenes material for the co-main event between Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard.
-Joe Rogan and Dana White yell at the TV for the final sell for the pay-per-view event.
=====Pay-Per-View Main Card=====
-Goldberg and Rogan break down the top two fights on the card for tonight and run down what else is on tap, then it's time for our first pay-per-view bout.
FIGHT FIVE: JUSTIN LAWRENCE VS. MAX HOLLOWAY (FEATHERWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Lawrence opened up first with a side kick to the body, but the opening minute was tentative overall. He landed a kick and Holloway popped in a couple jabs. Holloway landed a solid jab. Lawrence grazed with an overhand right. Holloway sidestepped a kick and landed a short left. Holloway threw a high kick that was blocked. Lawrence caught a leg kick but Holloway stayed on his feet. Holloway landed a hard left hook. Lawrence connected on one of his own. Holloway accidentally landed a hard kick to the groin that brought a halt to the action. They restarted with half the round still remaining. Holloway landed a good short uppercut as Lawrence came in. He landed another strike as Lawrence shot in, and Lawrence was opened up but completed the takedown. Holloway got up quickly. They traded punches in a nice quick exchange. Holloway got in a good knee and ate a couple of strikes. They traded strikes again. Lawrence got in a good body kick. Lawrence landed a good overhand right. Holloway connected on a few strikes as he backed Lawrence up to the cage. Holloway went for a flying knee and his foot went low right before the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Lawrence. Really even round, but Lawrence edged it. The striking was almost even, but Lawrence scored a brief takedown and scored a bit more on the feet, despite the cut.
ROUND TWO: Lawrence moved forward with some attacks early on, and pressed Holloway back for the first minute. He landed a nice left, and was getting the better of the early exchanges in the round. Lawrence went for a spinning back elbow that slightly connected. Holloway popped Lawrence's head back with a nice right. He got in a good body kick. Lawrence landed an inside leg kick. Lawrence shot in but got stuffed. Lawerence landed a left and slipped away from a counter. He kept Holloway back with a front kick. Lawrence landed a nice two-punch combo. The crowd booed a bit with some tentative action. Very impatient crowd tonight. Lawrence shot in again, but once more got stuffed. Holloway landed a couple good strikes and pressed Lawrence back. He got in a good knee to the body, but ate a couple of counter strikes. Holloway walked him down and landed a couple to the body. Holloway rocked Lawrence with a body shot and he buckled over in pain. Holloway then unleashed a big flurry that brought a stoppage with very little time left in the round. Big finish from Holloway as he was losing that round again.
WINNER: Holloway via TKO at 4:49 of the second round
STAR RATING: (**+) That was a solid, competitive fight with a great finish. Body shot TKOs just look brutal, as the visual of fighters doubling over in pain from those shots just adds to the proceedings. Holloway was on his way to being down two rounds to none there, and he snatched that win back with some great work on the cage.
FIGHT SIX: YUSHIN OKAMI VS. BUDDY ROBERTS (MIDDLEWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Roberts rushed in and landed an overhand left almost immediately. He continued pressing in, trying to keep Okami out of sync. Okami missed a right. Roberts landed another right in close. He had the better of the early exchanges. Okami landed a nice left. Roberts got in a solid body kick. Okami tried to walk him down. Okami ducked under a punch and Rogan said he got clipped and was wobbly. That didn't appear to be accurate, but shortly thereafter Roberts landed a hard right. Okami closed the distance and got a body lock on. He took his back standing, but couldn't take him down. Okami tried to bully him down, and finally succeed in dragging him down. He tried to spin to mount, and Roberts got him into his guard. He tried for an omoplata, but Okami rolled back into his guard. Okami passed to half guard. He almost got mount, but settled for side control. Okami tried to pass to mount but Roberts defended well. Okami got to mount with 30 seconds left. He landed some strikes, a couple that went to the back of the head. Okami swung with a series of strikes, but Roberts covered up well enough to reach the horn.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Okami. He was losing the striking exchanges early, and needed the final 30 seconds of mounted damage to take the round back, but he's got the clear advantage on the ground here.
ROUND TWO: Roberts tried to rush in and may have twisted his knee as he landed awkwardly. He landed a solid punch to Okami. Okami closed the distance with a left and again took his back standing. He dragged him to the ground and went to work. Roberts went for a guillotine, and though he lost it he used it to get to his feet. Okami stayed on him and took him down again. He passed to half guard and tried to pass to mount. He completed the pass to full mount once again, then looked to posture up and rain down punishment. Roberts gave up his back again and Okami landed some strikes. Roberts just put his arms over his head to defend and Okami just continued throwing strikes. The strikes weren't doing much damage, but Roberts wasn't doing anything but covering up, and Herb Dean stopped the fight. The crowd let out some boos at the finish.
WINNER: Okami via TKO at 3:05 of the second round
STAR RATING: (*+) Not much to the fight. Roberts showed some signs of life early on, but he had nothing to offer once Okami took him down, and he essentially gave up at the end by covering his head and waiting for Herb Dean to stop the fight. Okami needed that win for his confidence, but it doesn't mean much more than that.
FIGHT SEVEN: JAKE SHIELDS VS. ED HERMAN (MIDDLEWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Shields threw a high kick early but it hit Herman's shoulder. He landed a couple more body strikes. Herman closed the distance and clinched, but Shields threw him and then sprawled as they got back up. They traded body shots in the clinch as they battled for position. Shields tried briefly to set up a guillotine but lost his spot. They went back to knees in the clinch, and then Shields pulled off another trip takedown. Shields tried to take his back, but Herman got to his feet in a nice escape. They went back to the clinch battle, jockeying for position. Shields landed a nice knee to the head. Herman landed some body punches. Shields landed a few knees before eating an elbow. Shields dropped down and nearly scored another takedown, but Herman fought him off. They continued in the clinch. They should have been separated minutes ago, and Dana White's got to be unhappy with it thus far as the boos begin. They traded knees to the body and ended the round in the clinch.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Shields. He landed a couple of nice throws and some good body shots. Herman did a little damage in the clinch but otherwise didn't do much.
ROUND TWO: Shields scored an early takedown into half guard. He passed to side control. He went for a kimura from side control with Herman trapped against the cage, but he lost it. Shields looked to pass to mount, but Herman held him at bay in side control. Shields landed some elbows from side control. Shields pulled Herman away from the cage and kept himself in side control as he looked to pass. The crowd booed. Shields tried to pass to mount, and avoided the sweep to get back into Herman's guard. Shields landed a few elbows from the top. Herman got in a few from the bottom. Shields kept busy from the top. They traded strikes in Herman's guard, and the crowd let out some more boos. Shields landed some more offense from the top. Shields passed to half guard. He landed some more strikes. Herman got him back to guard, but Shields ended the round on top to more boos.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Shields. That round was all him, but he didn't do much damage overall to take more than a 10-9 frame. Herman can't play the grappling game with someone on Shields' level here.
ROUND THREE: Shields shot in and Herman held him off. He landed an uppercut as he pressed Shields to the cage. Shields landed a couple of knees to the body, and Herman added a couple of his own. Herman backed off and Shields looked pretty tired. He landed a kick to the body. Herman missed a big uppercut attempt. Herman then pulled off a throw, but backed away immediately. Herman landed a good strike, then Shields landed one as he shot in and scored another takedown, right into side control. Shields landed a couple of elbows from side control. Herman again avoided the mount pass, and actually pulled him into half guard. Shields then finally got to mount in a nice scramble. Herman tried to throw strikes from the back as Shields tried to set Herman up for an arm triangle. He postured up with an elbow, but Herman escaped and got him back to guard. Shields landed a few strikes in the guard, and Herman tried to land a few elbows and throw his legs up for some offense. Shields landed some short strikes. Shields began bleeding from the nose, but the round came to an end with him on top, and he was exhausted after the fight.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Shields. The altitude definitely had an effect on him in the fight, but he still dominated from the top even though he couldn't do a ton of damage. Not a good fight, but a solid and needed win for Shields in his return to middleweight.
WINNER: Shields via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)
STAR RATING: (*) Some solid grappling from Shields, and he's supremely talented from top position, but that wasn't much of a fight. Too much clinch work in the first round that went nowhere, and there wasn't a ton of action once the fight hit the ground. The crowd didn't like it much, but it was enough to get the win for Shields, and he's now won two straight.
FIGHT EIGHT: DONALD CERRONE VS. MELVIN GUILLARD (LIGHTWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Cerrone came straight forward and threw a head kick early. Guillard dropped him with a counter left and went on the attack. Cerrone tried to recover as Guillard rushed him. He landed some strikes against the cage as Cerrone backed away. Guillard slowed down and Cerrone seemed to recover a bit. Guillard missed a combo. Cerrone landed a hard leg kick. He landed a head kick that rocked Guillard, and then knocked him out with a huge running follow up right! Guillard faceplanted, and Cerrone held up on any follow up as Guillard was out and the referee came in. What a freaking round!
WINNER: Cerrone via KO at 1:16 of the first round
STAR RATING: (***+) That was as exciting as you can get in that short amount of time in a fight. Guillard's huge counter-left came out of nowhere, and then Cerrone comes back just 30 seconds later with that head kick and a running knockout punch. Crazy finish, and Cerrone just bought himself a winter date with Anthony Pettis, likely with a title shot on the line.
MAIN EVENT FIGHT NINE: BENSON HENDERSON VS. FRANKIE EDGAR (LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)
ROUND ONE: Edgar ran across the cage and they both circled each other early on. Edgar missed a high kick as Henderson backed away. Edgar landed an inside leg kick but it rode up the leg. Henderson landed a left. The opening was really tentative, with neither looking to over-commit. Henderson landed a hard leg kick. Henderson landed another hard leg kick from the outside. He missed an overhand right and Edgar countered nicely with one of his own. Henderson dropped Edgar with another leg kick, and the scrambled as Edgar grabbed a foot. Henderson worked his way back to his feet and they separated. Edgar returned a leg kick of his own. Henderson missed one. Edgar went high with a kick but it was blocked. Henderson landed a short punch. Henderson landed a nice right. He switched stances a few times. He landed a knee to the body, Edgar caught it and landed a right. Edgar landed a solid kick. Henderson landed a short jab. He landed another hard leg kick. Edgar took him down, but Henderson locked up a hard guillotine choke. Edgar survived to the horn, however.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Henderson. He landed those vicious leg kicks, got in a couple of other exchanges, and countered the late takedown with a very close submission attempt. Solid, if slow, start to the fight.
ROUND TWO: Henderson swung a big overhand right but it was blocked. He tripped Edgar up with the low kick to the leg again. He tried to engage but Edgar popped back up. Henderson landed a body kick, but Edgar caught it and landed a good kick to the body himself. Henderson set up for an axe kick, but Edgar was well out of range. He landed another hard leg kick, but Edgar caught it and he backed off. Edgar dropped Henderson with a big right in an exchange! He grabbed a front choke and tried to set it up against the cage. Henderson popped out of it, but Edgar stayed on him against the cage. Edgar landed a knee to the head as Henderson's hand came up. Edgar's nose got busted open somehow. Henderson finally worked back to his feet. Henderson landed a right. Henderson shot in, but Edgar stuffed it with a nice sprawl. He backed off and landed a right before letting Henderson up. Henderson landed a body kick as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Edgar. The knockdown was the most significant blow of the round, but Edgar's going to have to do more, as he can't count on landing that type of blow every round.
ROUND THREE: Henderson came out a bit more aggressive, landing a couple of shots. He landed a good knee to the body, and a couple of strikes as Edgar caught it. Henderson landed a nice straight jab. They each connected on a couple in a decent exchange. Edgar landed a body kick. Edgar landed a body punch. Henderson landed a jab. Edgar landed a hard inside leg kick. Edgar connected on a couple more leg kicks. Henderson landed a hard one that was caught. Again it was caught and Henderson landed a couple of strikes. The crowd booed as the action was still a bit tentative. Henderson landed a hard leg kick. Edgar got in another body kick. Henderson grazed a right hand late and Edgar ended the round with a side kick.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-10. Nothing really significant happened that round, and the striking was almost even. Someone's going to need to pull away in the championship rounds, because this is as even a fight as you can see at this stage.
ROUND FOUR: Edgar caught a kick but got a takedown stuffed. Henderson landed a big knee to the body. Henderson landed a good leg kick. Henderson landed a right. Edgar landed a solid leg kick. He caught another leg kick and scored a takedown. Henderson threw a leaping head kick from the ground, but Edgar dropped and grabbed a head lock against the cage. He tried to set the choke up against the cage. Henderson fought it off and got to his feet. He needs to do something here. Henderson landed a body punch but ate a counter strike. Edgar pawed in with a few short strikes. He landed a good body shot, but ate a couple of jabs. Edgar needed to put his mouthpiece back in. He landed a hard right, then Henderson countered with one of his own. They traded strikes in a good exchange, but Edgar again got the better of it. Edgar landed a leg kick. He avoided one and landed a counter right. Henderson landed a hard right. Edgar landed a good combo himself. Edgar caught another kick and Henderson landed a few strikes. Henderson tried to goad a brawl and got hit with a right. Edgar caught another body kick and landed one more as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Edgar. The takedown and choke attempt, along with better strikes on the feet give the former champ the edge here. I think Henderson needs to finish in this final round.
ROUND FIVE: Henderson landed an early right. Edgar got in a right. Edgar tripped Henderson up and pressed him down. He landed a good body shot as Henderson got in a knee. Edgar landed a body punch and a right to the jaw. Edgar landed a couple of kicks to the legs. Henderson landed a jab. No sense of urgency on Henderson's part. Henderson landed a solid combination. Edgar caught another kick. Henderson missed an elbow. Henderson landed a good left. He landed another another left. Edgar landed a good counter. Edgar connected on another hard right after separating from a brief clinch. He landed a couple of hard leg kicks. Henderson landed another knee, but it was caught again. Edgar landed a few more punches to the body. Henderson landed a good left. Edgar landed a couple more right hand strikes. He went high with a head kick and slipped. Henderson landed one to the face. Edgar shrugged it off and the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Edgar. Henderson raised his hand as if he won this, but the only round he took clearly tonight was the first. This could be four rounds to one Edgar, but either way I think Frankie's regaining the title. Henderson had no sense of urgency down the stretch.
WINNER: Henderson via split decision (46-49, 48-47, 48-47)
STAR RATING: (**) It wasn't anywhere near as action-packed as their first fight, and the decision is just absolutely atrocious. There's not a chance Henderson won three of those rounds. That just doesn't make any sense. At worst it was 48-47 for Edgar. That's just an absolute travesty of a decision.
