“Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman” Recap: Rousey Armbars Kaufman, Jacaré Chomps Brunson

“Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman” took to San Diego, California for an explosive night of action. Live from the Valley View Casino Center, Strikeforce brought some of its best fighters to the cage tonight. In the main event, Ronda Rousey submitted Sarah Kaufman via armbar to retain the women’s bantamweight crown. In the co-main event, BJJ phenom Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza scored the first knockout victory of his career over Derek Brunson.

In other action, Tarec Saffiedine, Anthony Smith, and Ovince St. Preux all notched victories on the Showtime main card.

Rousey Submits Kaufman, Calls out “Cyborg”

Ronda Rousey wasted little time in submitting Sarah Kaufman in tonight’s main event. Rousey rushed Kaufman and landed a few shots before clinching and  foot sweeping to mount. Rousey landed a few shots before locking in an armbar finish. Kaufman tried her best to escape but there was little chance of victory with the armbar applied.

Rousey called out former featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and told her to drop to 135 for the “first fair fight of her life.” Santos is currently under suspension until December.

“Jacaré” Chomps Brunson

Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza wanted everyone to know he had been working on his striking game and unfortunately for Derek Brunson, he found out in a hurry. Brunson tried to rush forward against “Jacaré” and ate a wicked right hook that felled Brunson. Brunson valiantly tried to recover but “Jacaré” pounced for the kill and finished the bout with strikes.

The big win puts Souza back in the title picture as he looks to regain his title from Luke Rockhold.

Saffiedine Edges Bowling

It was the power of Roger Bowling versus the technique of Tarec Saffiedine. The Belgian fighter utilized his striking experience and Team Quest wrestling training to control the fight for three rounds. While Bowling had chances to do damage, he was unable to put enough strikes together to stop Saffiedine. Saffiedine pressed the action for three rounds and wore out Bowling to the point that he was nearly able to finish the fight in the third by choke.

After the bout, Tarec was persuaded to lobby for a welterweight title shot versus Nate Marquardt.

Smith Out Scrambles Sayers

Anthony Smith won an ugly but fun fight against Lumumba Sayers tonight. Smith utilized superior scrambling to get to several advantageous positions early. Sayers was game though and fought back up to his feet. Smith then had an accidental slip that Sayers thought was a knockdown. That assumption proved fatal for Sayers as he charged right into a triangle choke.

OSP Smashes Cook Late

It was fight that was not for the feint of heart as both Ovince St. Preux and T.J. Cook were determined to knock the other out. The first round resembled “Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry” at one point as OSP swamred to finish a wounded Cook, only to get rocked himself. The second round saw the pace slow considerably but OSP utilized strong grappling to win the round. OSP wasted no time in the third as he fired an overhand right that Cook’s coaches were ironically asking their fighter to do. The result was a violent knockout that saw the former University of Tennessee linebacker simply walk away from his downed opponent after one punch.
