Sonnen will be moving up a weight class to light heavyweight when he meets the former champion Griffin. Sonnen who is friends with Griffin stated that this the first step to earning a title shot for the light heavyweight championship.
This, however, will not be the first time that Sonnen has faced Griffin. They fought under the International Fighting Championship banner in 2003 during which Griffin submitted Sonnen by triangle choke in the first round.
Sonnen has gone 5-3 while competing at middleweight since his return to the UFC in 2009. Two losses were in title fights to champion Anderson Silva. He recorded wins over several of the top 185-pounders including Michael Bisping, Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt.
Griffin is coming off a unanimous decision win in his rubber match with Tito Ortiz at UFC 148. This fight was recognized as the “Fight of the Night” on the card.
UFC 155 will be headlined with heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos defending his title against former champion Cain Velasquez.
