Former Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez will be making what may be his final appearance in the promotion’s cage as he takes on former lightweight tournament finalist Patricky “Pitbull” Freire at Bellator 76.
Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney took to twitter to announce what is, on paper, a fight of the year contender between two of the promotion’s premier lightweights.
Alvarez (23-3) lost the title to Michael Chandler in a thriller last November, but was able to bounce back this passed April with a knockout victory over the only other lightweight to hold a victory over him, Shinya Aoki, knocking out the Japanese superstar at 2:41. The Philadelphia will be rounding out his Bellator contract, and many feel he will be UFC-bound immediately after a three-month matching period ends. While the former champion has not stated his intentions, UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta has been putting a full-court press on Alvarez to join the Zuffa ranks.
Freire (10-3) looks to rebound from a March loss to Lloyd Woodard in the opening round of the Bellator Season 6 Tournament, a back-and-forth bout which saw both men in danger in the opening period. “Pitbull” eventually fell victim to injury, courtesy of a kimura from Woodard. Prior to that bout, the Brazilian needed only 50 seconds to dispose of UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino with a violent knockout.
Bellator 76 takes place October 12 at Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino in Ontario, Canada.
