Bruce Loh had expected to be a member of the 10,000 strong crowd at ONE FC: Rise of Kings in the Singapore Indoor Stadium next month. Instead, an unfortunate training injury to his compatriot Radeem Rahman will see him go from being part of the audience to fighting inside the cage against Malaysian Gianni Subba on October 6.
It sounds like something of a fairytale story but Loh has been on the scene in Singapore for years competing with success at BJJ, Sanshou, Muay Thai, boxing and, of course, MMA.
He takes a 2-1 pro record into his fight against Subba which promises to be a real grudge match because Loh’s opponent is from neighbouring Malaysia.
Subba had initially been expected to face Rahman until a hand injury suffered in training last week forced him to withdraw from the fight. Loh took the call and despite having been out of action himself with an injury had no hesitation in accepting the fight.
The Singaporean made his MMA debut last year and won a decision over tough Uzbek fighter Shodiyor Jurabekov in the main event at Malaysia Fighting Championship 2. He won his next fight by submission but tore a hamstring early in the first round when he rematched Jurabekov in March.
That injury put Loh out of action for almost six months but he has recovered and is ready for the biggest test of his career when he takes on a Malaysian opponent at ONE FC: Rise of the Kings.
The Singaporean crowd will be behind Loh and he will be fighting for national pride against the Malaysian. It will be a vastly different experience from the one he would have expected attending as a ticket holder but he has an incredible opportunity to fight and win in front of a stadium full of his countrymen.
The card is set to be headlined by a bout between Zorobabel Moreira and Kotetsu Boku and also features Shinya Aoki as well as Melvin Manhoef. The online stream will be $10 USD and it will also be available on pay-per-view (PPV) in the US for the first time.
