UFC Interim Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao originally said he was going to wait to unify the belts with current champion Dominick Cruz, but now that Cruz is sidelined Barao will defend his title. As expected, Barao will face off against Michael McDonald for the interim title.
The UFC made the official announcement on UFC tonight. Barao won his interim title when Cruz pulled out of his fight with Urijah Faber, and the two fought to a unanimous decision at UFC 149. McDonald is coming off of the biggest win in his career as well. At UFC 145, McDonald knocked out former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres in just over three minutes, and put the whole division on notice. If McDonald wins his fight with Barao, he will become the youngest champion in UFC history.
No date or location has been announced for the fight.
