Brian Ebersole is on an 11-fight win streak, and took his bout with James Head just a month after beating T.J. Waldburger. Helping out the UFC by taking a fight on short notice will usually land a fighter on UFC president Dana White's good side. However, White is not a fan of Ebersole's manscaping, which usually has his chest hair shaved into a "hairrow" pointing up.
MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani tweeted the bad news during the UFC 149 press conference.
Ouch. For some reason, White is not a fan of fighters expressing themselves in the cage. Jason Miller and Tom Lawlor's entrances also drew his ire. It's a shame, because with more than 400 fighters on the roster, little touches of personality make a fighter stand out. Ebersole hasn't lost with the hairrow, so why would he stop now? Rock that hairrow, Brian.

In Monday's discussion of middleweights looking to inch closer to a shot at Anderson Silva and the championship, two names were not discussed: Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman. Since they already have a fight, they don't need to lobby for the right fight, like Michael Bisping, Alan Belcher and Brian Stann do.
They'll face each other on Wednesday night at UFC on Fuel 4. For Munoz, a win means a shot at Silva.
"With a win over Chris Weidman, I'm going to prove that I should have the title shot," Munoz told MMAjunkie.com Radio.
Weidman told MMA Fighting he is also seeking a title shot. After a lackluster win over Demian Maia in January, he wants to make it crystal clear he deserves the next shot at the belt.
"I'm fighting to make a statement in this fight," he said. "It would be my fifth win in the UFC in a row, I've fought a lot of tough guys, veterans in this sport. I really didn't have any easy fights, so I want to make a statement. I would love a chance against Anderson Silva, I think I really match up good against him, and I mean, I would love a shot, so we'll see. I really just want to make a statement in this fight. I want to make it blatantly obvious that I should be the one fighting Anderson Silva. That's the goal."
Both men have NCAA Division I wrestling backgrounds, though Munoz was a national champion for Oklahoma State while Weidman wrestled for less-acclaimed Hofstra. They are also coming in riding win streaks: four in a row for Munoz and five in a row for Weidman.

UFC President Dana White checks in with the first video blog for Saturday’s UFC on FOX 4 Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Brandon Vera.
The first order of business is to clarify who will get the next title shot at the light heavyweight championship. Earlier in the week it was announced that the winner of the main event between Rua and Vera would get the title shot. Needless to say, that did not go over very well with MMA fans. Now the competitors in the co-main event, Ryan Bader and Lyoto Machida, are also in the running for the title shot. Whoever has the most impressive win among the four light heavyweights will become the number one contender.
Also highlighted in the video blog is Dana’s birthday trip to Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, as well as, a behind the scenes look at UFC 149.

UFC welterweight Nick Diaz recently turned heads when his manager/coach, Cesar Gracie, announced the Stockton scrapper had expressed his interest in returning to the ring after a brief retirement and wanted to mix it up with middleweight champion Anderson Silva. However, many fans felt as though Diaz was simply motivated to take the match-up in hopes of obtaining the gold strapped around Silva’s waist rather than truly interested in taking on “The Spider”.
Gracie has since addressed the issue, explaining Diaz could care less about the belt and only wants to solidify his position as one of MMA’s best by fighting someone with Silva’s reputation.
Diaz’s Desire to Fight Silva a Superb Plan
“Why Anderson? Because Anderson is a huge a name, and he’s talking the talk that we’re talking about. He’s talking about doing super-fights. He’s talking about fighting outside of his weight. He’s talking about the things that Nick’s been talking about, that Nick did when he was with Strikeforce, that Nick is into…that’s why,” stated Gracie in an interview with MiddleEasy, adding, “And he’s exciting, he’s a great fighter.”
“It’s not about the title. We don’t want a title. It could be at 185 and we don’t want the title. Nick isn’t trying to be disrespectful to other great middleweights out there…this is about fighting, a super-fight,” he concluded.
Diaz is currently suspended until February after testing positive for marijuana metabolites earlier this year but is in the process of appealing the NAC’s findings in hopes of fighting against before the end of 2012.

After losing a unanimous decision to Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold earlier this month, Tim Kennedy ended much speculation as to what his next move would be by calling out grappling ace Roger Gracie on twitter last week. The former US Army sniper said “ I heard Scott Coker say Roger Gracie was the best grappler in Strikeforce. I would love to prove that is not the case.”
A week to the day, the Brazilian has responded to the challenge. The Grappling ace, who took a lopsided decision victory over former title challenger Keith Jardine at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs Kennedy, responded to the challenge, telling Tatame:
He can say whatever he wants. He can be good on the ground, but technically I’m much better. In a Jiu-Jitsu match, he probably wouldn’t have a chance against me. In a MMA fight, we can’t say. In my last fight, Jardine was far away from being a black belt and I couldn’t submit him.
I guess it can be an interesting fight. Anyone in Strikeforce would do an interesting fight with me.
While the bout has yet to made official, the current state of the promotion indicates that the middleweight bout is likely go for a future Strikeforce event. A win for the Gracie could secure a title shot for the BJJ legend.

With family matters on his mind, Matthew Riddle earned a win at UFC 149 with an arm triangle choke of Chris Clements.
After a bruising two and a half rounds, Clements tried a spinning back fist. Riddle grabbed Clements' arm, and maneuvered him into an arm triangle while the pair was still standing. They fell to the ground, but Riddle held on. Clements tapped at 2:02 in the third round, giving Riddle the win.
After telling UFC commentator Joe Rogan he loved him, Riddle turned his focus to his wife and kids.
"I wanna say I love my wife Lisa. We have a kid on the way, and we already have twins. I love you all," Riddle said after his win.

Riddle's devotion went beyond mentioning his wife to the crowd in Calgary and the pay-per-view audience. Instead of flying from Texas to Calgary for the fights, Dave Farra reports Riddle drove 20 hours because he wanted her at the fights with him. Pregnant women are often advised not to fly during certain parts of their pregnancies, so he made the sacrifice so she could be there to support him.
Riddle won a $65,000 Submission of the Night bonus, which should help with the baby on the way.

TUF 14 winner Diego Brandao will head home to his native country of Brazil for his next fight in the Octagon against Joey Gambino. UFC 153 takes place October 13 live from the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Brandao tweeted the bout announcement earlier today.
Both fighters will be looking to bounce back from losses in their last bouts. Brandao dropped a decision to Darren Elkins at UF 146 after looking strong early. Gambino was dominated by Steven Siler in his UFC debut at UFC on FX 4.
UFC 153 takes place October 13 at the HSBC Arena. The bout will be headlined by a featherweight title fight between the champion Jose Aldo and Erik Koch. Roy Nelson was excited to get the news that he would be a coach on the newest installment of The Ultimate Fighter, but now it’s all about getting his assistant coaches approved. According to the former Ultimate Fighter winner, there appears to be a hold-up in approving some of his chosen coaches, and he’s not sure what’s happening exactly. “I’m excited. I’m just over here hoping that I can actually bring all my coaches that I want to be my assistant coaches and bring on. I might just have to do it myself. You never know. I don’t (think) they approve of half the people I hang out with,” Nelson told MMAWeekly Radio. The choices of Nelson’s coaches include former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, who is now signed to Bellator Fighting Championships as well as TNA wrestling. “Right now I got Mo Lawal cause he’s a great wrestling coach and he helped me out the last time. Then I got Jeff Mayweather, James Johnson, those are just the three main ones that I have so far, and then I’m working on Anthony Brown,” Nelson revealed. Anthony Brown is a Muay Thai and Krav Maga instructor out of Las Vegas, while Jeff Mayweather is a famed boxing trainer coming from the long line of Mayweather brothers including Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Roger Mayweather. The problem now is getting them all approved, and Nelson isn’t sure why there is a hold up in the process. Is it because of Lawal’s newly signed contact with Bellator, where he will appear on Spike TV, the former home of UFC programming? “I don’t know,” answered Nelson. “It’s about coaching and it’s about these kids. I think I even asked Victor Conte and I think he probably wouldn’t get approved because it’s about cleaning up the sport, and he’s one of those guys that wants to clean it up.” Victor Conte is infamous in the world of performance enhancing drugs as the former head of BALCO, the lab that was connected to designer steroids and many famous pro athletes including Barry Bonds, Shane Mosley and Bill Romanowski. After doing a stint in prison for his part in the illegal distribution of the drugs, Conte states he’s cleaned up his act and is now an advocate for ridding the sports world of performance enhancing drugs. Nelson is still trying to put together his coaching staff as the new season of the Ultimate Fighter begins filming in just a few days before it debuts in early September. He’s unsure what the final call of coaches will look like, but warns that he may be a one man wolfpack when The Ultimate Fighter season 16 begins. “The thing is I’m just hoping they get approved because they tend to all stick together, because they know how it works. I don’t want them to be treated like Rosa Parks,” Nelson stated. “All I know is they’re the ones that do the casting calls. If this year’s Ultimate Fighter sucks, I’m going to blame them.” |
UPDATE: Roy Nelson has now released the final list of coaches and guest coaches that will be appearing on the Ultimate Fighter this season. Nelson released the list via his official Facebook page on Saturday. “Here are my assistant/guest coaches the non-UFC coaches will be helping but not on the set because they are black, criminals, white, Olympian, great TV … (disclaimer I have no idea, just opinion)” Nelson stated. “Non-UFC allowed: Muhammed Lawal, Kurt Angle, Victor Conte.” The list of ‘allowed’ coaches according to Nelson include: Royce Gracie, James Johnson, Jeff Mayweather, George St. Pierre, Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, Rashad Evans, Forrest Griffin, Chael Sonnen, Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez, Martin Kampmann, Amir Sadollah, Mike Pyle, Gray Maynard, Ron Frazier, and Anthony Brown. “I am a student first, teacher second. Let give these kids an opportunity of a lifetime,” Nelson wrote. “A UFC super camp.” |

Many of MMA’s top female fighters were in Kansas City tonight for Invicta FC’s second offering and to the delight of many put together an excellent event from start to finish (minus a few technical issues at the start). With Invicta FC 2, the promotion built on the success of their first show with a card featuring unbeaten Olympian Sara McMann taking on crafty submission-specialist Shayna Baszler and peppered with veteran competitors.
McMann got the toughest test of her career as expected against Baszler, getting all she could handle on the grappling front and some stand-up to boot. However, in the end it was the silver medalist who rose to the occasion and pulled out a Unanimous Decision win to maintain her perfect record at 6-0.
Other notable fighters scheduled to scrap on tonight’s lineup included Alexis Davis-Hitomi Akano and Liz Carmouche-Kaitlin Young, plus the lineup featured from Amanda Nunes, Julia Budd, and Carla Esparza.
As a whole, the show was full of finishes including a number of submissions including those from Carmouche and Davis who both locked in Rear-Naked Chokes to seal the deal.

Last night marked an evening filled with as many awesome memories as fans might have hoped for with WWE delivering one of the greatest RAWs in the brand’s decade-plus history. Long-abandoned storylines came into play on the show’s historic 1000th episode, including the appearance of a fully grown hand, and more than a few major plot points unfolded such as Daniel Bryan being left at the later and John Cena’s failure to win CM Punk’s title.
Two of the show’s key players, Cena and Bryan, were among the group of WWE Superstars addressing a backstage camera for the organization’s weekly Fallout segment and their reactions, as expected, were less than cordial.
A Look Back at Last Night’s Complete Episode
Cena maintained more composure in defeat, chalking it up to a bad decision and a lack of respect on the part of Punk. Meanwhile, Bryan was still fuming thanks to AJ deciding to take a job as RAW/Smackdown GM rather than his hand in marriage.

Hector Lombard came into UFC 149 riding a long win streak and an unstoppable hype train. He walked out of UFC 149 with a decision loss and a disappointed boss.
"It wasn't the fight I was expecting," UFC president Dana White admitted. "It just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Whether it was Boetsch or Lombard winning, I was expecting a real war. I thought this thing was going to be a war."
It was far from an exciting bout, as Lombard, known for his aggression and knockouts, showed little aggressiveness in the bout. White wondered if Octagon jitters got the best of Lombard, and also threw out the idea that middleweight is too big of a weight class.
"Lombard maybe should fight at 170," White said. "He made 185 easily. He's short and wide, but I think he could make 170."
In a Q and A before the UFC 149 weigh-ins, middleweight Michael Bisping made jokes about Lombard's height.
"I bumped into Hector Lombard in the elevator, and I thought someone was playing a practical joke. I was like, 'Who is this dwarf?' I think he's in the wrong weight class. I think he's in the 125 weight class."
At 5-foot-9, Lombard is one of the shortest middleweights in the division. Most 185ers in the UFC are at least six-foot. Champion Anderson Silva is 6-foot-2. Though fighters have overcome height and reach differences in bouts -- think Travis Browne knocking out Stefan Struve -- there is no reason for Lombard to come into the fight at a disadvantage if he is comfortable dropping down.
Should he drop down? Tell us your thoughts in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Jul 28, 2012 - If there is one thing we know about combat sports athletes, it is that time tends to catch up with them quickly. The wear and tear on muscles and joints, the nagging injuries, the grueling training camps, they all take their toll on the body and combine to rob fighters of their explosiveness, their speed and sometimes, their desire. And in a game of milliseconds, that is sometimes enough to make all the difference between victory and defeat. In 2011, mixed martial arts writer David Williams did an extensive study aimed at examining fighters' careers and their performance drop-offs. And what he found after examing the career spans of over 300 of them was that the steepest drop in performance comes after nine years of professional action. His theory -- dubbed "The 9-Year Rule" -- noted major fighters including Chuck Liddell, Fedor Emelianenko and Takanori Gomi as examples, but reported that across the board, the 9-Year Rule seems to apply with a handful of exceptions. One of those is Anderson Silva. His most recent win over Chael Sonnen was just days after the 15th anniversary of his MMA debut. Now 37 years old, he is one of MMA's elder statesmen, and he is also an anomaly. In a young man's game, Silva is the second-oldest fighter ranked among the top 10 in any division (only 41-year-old Dan Henderson is older). And each time he fights, his unmatched record of success continues to grow. Here is a look at his memorable UFC streak. The Records Most Consecutive Wins 1. Anderson Silva - 15 2. Royce Gracie - 11 Gracie's streak started at UFC 1 when Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was practically a family secret, giving him a sort of built-in advantage in fight competition. Still, he had to win 11 fights over four events to set the record, one that would last for nearly 16 years. Ironically, the match in which Silva broke the record is undoubtedly his all-time legacy bout: his August 2010 fifth-round submission win over Sonnen. Most Wins In Title Fights 1. Anderson Silva 11-0 2. Georges St-Pierre 9-2 When you argue the places of Silva and St-Pierre in the pound-for-pound debate, this is where Silva gets a leg up. Not only because he's unbeaten, but also because both of St-Pierre's losses are via first-round stoppage. Silva's never been afraid of the big moments, and it's shown in his performance. It's also interesting to note that St-Pierre's last fight against Jake Shields was his first after his nine-year anniversary, and since then, he's been set back by injuries. Consecutive Title Defenses 1. Anderson Silva - 10 2. Georges St-Pierre - 6 St-Pierre's streak is still active, so it's possible that one day he breaks Silva's record, but as noted, he's had trouble staying healthy. Silva's total of 11 straight defenses is just one less than the second and third longest streaks put together, as Matt Hughes is just behind St-Pierre with five. Longest Title Reign 1. Anderson Silva - 2,114 days 2. Georges St-Pierre - 1,561 days Of note, Silva has had the middleweight championship in his possession more than twice as long as all four of the previous divisional title holders put together. Dave Menne (105 days), Murilo Bustamante (267), Evan Tanner (119) and Rich Franklin (497) held it for a combined 958 days before Silva won the belt from Franklin. In addition, by the time St-Pierre defends his belt in November, he will have been inactive for 568 days, nearly one-third of his reign. By contrast, Silva has fought twice a year every year since he won the belt, though it is currently unknown whether he will get a second fight in 2012. Significant Strike Accuracy 1. Anderson Silva - 67.6% 2. Cain Velasquez - 60.2% There's no greater evidence of Silva's sniper-like striking than this stat, which has him ahead of one of the UFC's great ground-and-pound artists. Silva's pinpoint accuracy is as much responsible for his knockdowns and dominance as his power. Knockdowns Landed 1. Anderson Silva - 16 2. Chuck Liddell - 14 What's amazing about this stat is that Silva averages more than one knockdown per fight. His 16 knockdowns come in 15 fights while Liddell, who is thought of as one of the hardest punchers in UFC history, needed 23 fights to get 14 knockdowns. In UFC history, 25 fighters have competed in the octagon more than Silva, yet he stands alone. The Opponents Even after Silva retires, the debate about whether he reigned over a weak division or was simply that much better than anyone else will probably live on. But the objective evidence showed that he certainly fought worthy opposition most of the time. Most telling of his talent is his record of success against men who held titles in major organizations at some point of their careers. Against those opponents (Franklin twice, Dan Henderson, Forrest Griffin, Vitor Belfort and Nate Marquardt), Silva was 6-0 with 5 knockouts and 1 submission. Four of those fights were finished in the first round, and none of the six made it past the second. Prior to facing Silva, his opponents had a combined record of 283 wins, 68 losses, 4 draws and 3 no contest, for a winning percentage of .803. Given that, there's no question that Silva faced a series of winners. And he largely dominated them. It's not just that he won; it's how he did it. In eight of his 15 fights, he landed more than double the strikes of his opponent. Four times, opponents failed to land even 10 strikes against him. Think about that for a second, the level of supremacy needed to completely shut down an attack. Although James Irvin was far from his toughest opponent, Silva might have had his perfect fight against him. Why? Irvin landed no strikes. Zero. Leben did a little better, hitting Silva a single time. Griffin managed just four landed strikes. Belfort had six. Sonnen has been the only one to out-strike him in a fight, though he did it on two occasions. The Legacy Silva's career is boosted by the fact that he chose to go up in weight twice to fight light-heavyweights. The first fight came against Irvin, a big puncher who proved to be a fairly mediocre divisional talent at the UFC level. But in his second 205-pound fight, he faced Forrest Griffin, who was just coming off losing his title to Rashad Evans. Just prior to that, Griffin had beaten Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua consecutively, so there seemed to be true danger for Silva in the bout. Yet both of his outings at light-heavyweight proved to be whitewashings. Silva needed just 61 seconds to knockout Irvin, and took just 3:23 to embarrass Griffin. For sure, his legacy fight is the first bout with Sonnen, a fight in which he survived a beating for almost four rounds until locking him in a stunning, fight-ending triangle/armbar. Finally, he had his character tested, and his reign in jeopardy, and he still refused to succumb to the moment and his opponent's momentum. While that is the moment that crystallized that his heart was of the same championship-level as his talent, Silva will be remembered for many of the moments he authored. His violent clinch work against Franklin. The way he viciously choked out Henderson. His clowning of Griffin. His dramatic submission against Sonnen. His front kick knockout of hated rival Belfort. MMA is still a young sport, but we know from a small sample size that it is so multi-textured that losing is nearly an inevitability. That it is so physically demanding that primes come and go in a blink. But neither has held true for Silva, an exception to all of the rules. No one has ever done it better in the octagon, and at 37, The Spider may still have webs to weave. |

As reported earlier, Ben Rothwell has suffered an ankle injury in preparation for his bout with Travis Browne. While a replacement for Rothwell was sought, the UFC decided to instead pull Travis Browne from the card all-together. The UFC decided to fill the void on the main card with a welterweight fight between Demarques Johnson and Mike Swick. UFC officials announced the news Wednesday evening.
Swick will be making his first appearance in over two and a half years when he faces Johnson. The AKA product has dealt with both illness and injury in that time period but is now ready to make his return to the Octagon.
UFC on Fox 4 takes place August 11 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The four-fight main card will be anchored by a light heavyweight fight between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Brandon Vera. The main card will obviously air on Fox with the preliminary card airing on Fuel TV.

Interested listeners can also contribute by submitting questions for guests via Twitter, email (RebellionMMARadio@yahoo.com), or even by calling in!
As one of the organization’s ring-girls, Palmer’s presence at UFC events is always a welcome sight to fans with an appreciation for bombshell beauties. She has also modeled for Playboy, as well as a number of other outlets, and is an aspiring artist with a continually growing collection of works.
Zahabi is also a familiar face at UFC events though for different reasons. The TriStar MMA chief is one of the most respected trainers in the sport and works with some of its best including Kenny Florian, Miguel Torres, Rory MacDonald, and Georges St-Pierre.
Chou is one of a handful of prominent matchmakers in MMA due in large part to his work with Strikeforce and ProElite. Based on his experience he’s sure to provide a ton of insight on the matchmaking process and backstage goings-on in general.
As always, the show kicks off at 6:30 PM EST on Sunday, so make sure to tune in and even get your own voice out there on the airwaves if so inclined!

After the preliminary card, UFC 149 seemed to be headed towards classic status. The momentum from exciting performances early in the night would have to carry over to the main card, right? As we soon found out, wrong. Whether it was injury, short notice or "Octagon jitters," most of the pay-per-view had none of the magic from early in the night.
Who were those fighters who stood out? Here are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Tell yours in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
No. 1 star -- Ryan Jimmo: Two fighters with long careers in other promotions made their UFC debuts at UFC 149. Though Hector Lombard came in a steam-powered locomotive of hype, it was Jimmo who had the memorable fight, knocking out Anthony Perosh in just seven seconds. He tied the UFC record for fastest knockout and won a $65,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.
No. 2 star -- Matthew Riddle: On less than a month notice, Riddle took out Chris Clements with a third round arm-triangle choke after a thrilling bout to kick off the pay-per-view card. (See? Not the entire PPV was terrible.) He pulled off that win after driving from Texas to Calgary so that his pregnant wife could be with him for the fights. Did I mention they also have twins at home? I'm exhausted on his behalf. Hopefully, the $65,000 Submission of the Night bonus will buy Riddle some rest and relaxation.
No. 3 star -- Francisco Rivera: Coming right after Jimmo's knockout, poor Rivera didn't have a chance at the Knockout of the Night bonus. However, he still delivered with a huge left to send Roland Delorme to the canvas with a first-round knockout.
Gabriel Gonzaga Lyman Good Gary Goodridge Gerard Gordeau Jonathan Goulet
UFC 148 ended with another great performance by the world's greatest fighter. Before that, the exciting performances were few and far between. Read on for Cagewriter's Three Stars, and tell us yours in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
No. 1 star -- Anderson Silva: The UFC middleweight champ did two things right to hold onto his belt. First, he kept Chael Sonnen from taking advantage of his top position in the first round. Sonnen was in full mount near the end of the round, and Silva was able to keep Sonnen from taking advantage right then. Secondly, he took advantage when Sonnen made a mistake in the second round, using a precise knee and relentless striking to end the fight.
No. 2 star -- Chad Mendes: After a preliminary card filled with not-so-thrilling decisions, Mendes delivered with a knockout of Cody McKenzie in less than a minute. It was exactly what the card needed.
No. 3 star -- Cung Le: At 40, Le had starred in movies and earned big wins in Strikeforce, but no UFC wins. He fixed that on Saturday night, outkicking Patrick Cote on the way to a decision win.
