Nick Diaz simply wants to fight Anderson Silva, not take his middleweight title

UFC welterweight Nick Diaz recently turned heads when his manager/coach, Cesar Gracie, announced the Stockton scrapper had expressed his interest in returning to the ring after a brief retirement and wanted to mix it up with middleweight champion Anderson Silva. However, many fans felt as though Diaz was simply motivated to take the match-up in hopes of obtaining the gold strapped around Silva’s waist rather than truly interested in taking on “The Spider”.

Gracie has since addressed the issue, explaining Diaz could care less about the belt and only wants to solidify his position as one of MMA’s best by fighting someone with Silva’s reputation.

Diaz’s Desire to Fight Silva a Superb Plan

“Why Anderson? Because Anderson is a huge a name, and he’s talking the talk that we’re talking about. He’s talking about doing super-fights. He’s talking about fighting outside of his weight. He’s talking about the things that Nick’s been talking about, that Nick did when he was with Strikeforce, that Nick is into…that’s why,” stated Gracie in an interview with MiddleEasy, adding, “And he’s exciting, he’s a great fighter.”

“It’s not about the title. We don’t want a title. It could be at 185 and we don’t want the title. Nick isn’t trying to be disrespectful to other great middleweights out there…this is about fighting, a super-fight,” he concluded.

Diaz is currently suspended until February after testing positive for marijuana metabolites earlier this year but is in the process of appealing the NAC’s findings in hopes of fighting against before the end of 2012.
