UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz just can’t seem to catch a break. After being forced out of a UFC 149 grudge match with Urijah Faber, having to undergo an ACL transplant, “The Dominator” was gunning for an early 2013 return. Unfortunately for the champ, his body rejected the cadaver transplant from the initial surgery, and he was forced to undergo yet another surgery, delaying his return for another 6-9 months.
Cruz has not defended his title since October of 2011, where he took a unanimous decision over Demetrious Johnson, who has since won the UFC Flyweight tournament to be crowned champion of that division.
Upon his eventual return, The Alliance product is slated to meet interim champion Renan “Barao” in a title unification bout, however, Pegado’s prerogative to to sit out and wait for Cruz’s return now seems much more unlikely. UFC President Dana White has been angling for the Brazilian to defend the interim title against the rising star Michael McDonald. Assuming the bout does take place, Cruz will likely be welcomed back to action by the winner.
