Chris Weidman Undergoes Surgery, Expects to Be 100% by Spring

weidman-e1288659248542

Middleweight contender Chris Weidman’s withdrawal from a December 29 tilt with Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 was disappointing to say the least. The 28-year old was forced out of the fight when he injured his shoulder while training to the point surgery was required.

Luckily, it sounds like Weidman won’t be out of commission for too long, as he’s already gone under the knife to repair the damage and has been told he should be back in action by March.

“Surgery went perfect. On my way back to Long Island now. Had a torn labrum and rotator cuff, AC joint separation and slight tear in the ligament. I will be 90-percent in three months and 100 in four!”

“Gonna make it my life mission to come back better than ever.”

UFC Champ Ben Henderson says Anthony Pettis loss still drives him into UFC on Fox 5 defense

HendersonBen_Wide_1.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I'm not over that. It's not about compartmentalizing. It's about embracing all of it, accepting all of it. That moment, losing, happened once in the past six years. That moment happened to me like it was yesterday. The work I'm doing now, that's what makes me win my next fight... I don't take it and forget about it. You have to take it, let it fuel you, and make you a better fighter and person."

-UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson talks to MMAJunkie.com about the loss to Anthony Pettis that still burns in his mind and drives him forward.

Penick's Analysis: Everyone needs something to latch onto, something that can motivate them to get whatever it is they need to get in life. For Henderson right now, that WEC loss to Pettis - complete with the insult-to-injury "Showtime Kick" that will never stop being a highlight - is one of those nagging things that he can't necessarily live down, but that he can turn to a positive. By not letting that consume him, but instead drive him to improve, he's gone on a hell of a run in the UFC. He hopes to continue that next weekend at UFC on Fox 5, and if he does that, along with a Pettis win over Donald Cerrone in January, he'll likely have a chance to avenge that defeat.

10 things every MMA fan needs to know about judging

There are hundreds of MMA fights around the country every weekend. Each fight needs qualified judges to score the action, but the growth of MMA means there aren't enough judges to go around.

Over the weekend, I sat in on an MMA judging clinic by Association of Boxing Commissions-certified trainer Robert Hinds of Combat Consulting. (The ABC is the group that oversees the state commissions that administer MMA across the United States.) The clinic gives prospective judges to be a place to start their judging career, and several state commissions require certification from an event like the one I attended. Whether you want to be a judge or not, every MMA fan should know something about how winners and losers are chosen when fights go to decisions. Here is what you need to know:

1. Judges look at result of the move, not the move itself. It's not about the takedown. It's about what happens from the takedown. It's not about the punch. It's about if the punch lands, and if it has an impact.

2. Judges are not fans. If they are scoring as fans, they should be fired. Judges have to be dispassionate and objective in every fight they judge. If they are a fan of one fighter or another, they need to reconsider their job.

3.Media, fans and promoters have no business comparing their score cards to those of judges. When I'm covering fights, I'm watching the fights, taking notes, tweeting and answering emails, text messages and instant messages. When fans watch the fights, they watch the fights, order beers, talk with friends, and check out the waitress who just delivered another plate of wings. When a promoter watches the fights, he or she is watching the fights, keeping an eye on the broadcast, dealing with inevitable problems on every fight card, and talking with fans and staff.

When a good judge is watching a fight, he or she is watching the fight. That's it. He or she has been trained on how to focus on the fight and see what has affected the round. Every bit of their brain power is focused on the fight. I've never had a judge tell me how to cover a story. I shouldn't try to do their job, and neither should you.

4. Positioning  matters. With three judges around the cage, each one will not see the same thing. Sometimes a judge will not see a punch because only a fighter's back is visible. While monitors help in this situation, they're not everywhere yet and they are not a cure all. The judge is then limited to the view decided by the director of the show. If you're wondering what fight a judge watched, realize that it may not be the exact same one you saw on television.

5. Judges score rounds, not fights. When a round ends, the judge should score it and forget it. What happened in round one should not affect what score a judge gives in round three. In fact, Hinds recommended the use of individual score cards for each round so that judges are not influenced by their previous score.

6. 10-10 rounds are rare. Hinds described 10-10 rounds as a "unicorn." In a five-minute round, or even a three-minute round, something should happen that will give one fighter the edge over another. An observant judge should be able to catch it. 10-8 rounds have a specific definition: complete domination and significant impact for the entire round. If you don't see both, it's not a 10-8.

7. Judges can do nothing but judge. If a foul is not called by a ref, the judge cannot deduct a point. If a fighter's corner is giving the fighter terrible advice, the judge cannot give the fighter the benefit of the doubt. If the matchmaker came up with a terrible fight, the judge cannot take a round off and expect the knockout. The judge can judge the round. That's it.

8. What makes a bad judges is not the results they give, but their methods in judging and not using the criteria. Judges have a criteria and professional standards to follow. They need to carefully judge rounds, staying focused the entire time on using the criteria to call a winner in each round. If they are looking away, talking to someone, or eating or drinking during a round, that's a problem. If they can't say how the criteria applied to their judgment, that's a problem.

9. Not everyone can be a judge. During the clinic, we watched several fights to practice judging. Five minutes at a time, we practiced focusing on the fight and nothing else. It took me about a minute before my mind wandered. On Saturday night, we sat cageside for amateur fights so we could practice what we learned during the day. MMA's brutality is in your face from that distance. One man from the clinic confessed  being so close to the action was emotional.

Judges have to be focused, and they cannot be squeamish. If you're not OK with listening to fighters get hit in the head, or hearing their bones crunch throughout their fights, or having blood and sweat fly onto your face, don't be a judge.

10. Judging ain't easy. Much like any profession, judges don't wake up one day and decide it's time to start judging UFC fights. Someone hoping to be a qualified judge has to practice by judging fights on television and judging sparring sessions at nearby gyms. They attend clinics and shadow judges in amateur fights before trying it themselves, then do the same routine before trying a professional fight.

With the growth of MMA from the amateurs on up the UFC, the sport needs good judges. If you think you can contribute to the sport in this way, contact your state commission.

Luke Rockhold Off of January 12 Strikeforce Card

SF7_05_Rockhold_vs_Jardine_001

Strikeforce can go ahead and edit the “s” out of the word champions in the title of the organization’s upcoming January 12 card, to just “Strikeforce: Champion(-s).” The card was once to feature three title tilts, but Gilbert Melendez pulled out of his fight with Pat Healy last week. Now Luke Rockhold (10-1) has withdrawn from his championship clashwith Lorenz Larkin and will not be fighting on the card. This is basically the exact same thing that happened to the November 3 card that was cancelled, and according to reports its the same wrist injury that kept him out of the previous fight.

Rumors are spreading that the whole card might be scrapped, but Fighters.com has only been able to confirm the injury to Rockhold’s wrist.  Many fans were also wondering why Rockhold wasn’t named in the Strikeforce preview that aired during a boxing match on the network Saturday night. If you are keeping a tally at home, the only championship fight on the card now is a welterweight title fight between Nate Marquardt and Tarec Saffiedine.

The MMA Corner broke the story,

We learned from sources close to the camp of Rockhold that the middleweight champion has suffered a wrist injury and has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled Jan. 12 title defense against Lorenz Larkin. Rockhold and Larkin were previously slated to meet on Strikeforce’s Nov. 3 card, but Rockhold was forced out of that contest with an injury to the same wrist and the entire card was subsequently canceled.

WWE Monday Night Raw TV report (airdate July 23, 2012)

The Big News: Raw celebrated its 1000th episode with a star studded collection of returning wrestlers and a memorable CM Punk heel turn.
Show Analysis:
They premiered a new WWE logo video to start, reading “then,” “now,” and “forever.” The show then featured video of Raw moments throughout the years. There was plenty of good stuff in there, but also a heavy emphasis on the ridiculous and on celebrity guest hosts. They have a new set on the stage too. It looks good and is basically the same as before.
Vince McMahon came out next and thanked the fans for 1,000 episodes of Raw. The crowd chanted “thank you Vince” back. Vince then did the old “Welcome to Monday Night Raw” line that he used at the start of all the early episodes of the program. It was an appropriate start as I always liked that intro. He introduced DX.
Shawn Michaels and Triple H came out, doing the more recent version of DX with the glow sticks and merchandise. Michaels said it felt like they were missing something. HHH pointed out there used to be more of them. That got a big crowd reaction. HHH and Michaels pointed to the entrance way and X-Pac, Road Dogg and Billy Gunn came out in a jeep like the Norfolk WCW invasion. They all looked good.
Road Dogg did the old New Age Outlaws intro but wouldn’t say ass. HHH then did the old Are you Ready routine. HHH made a crack about being the only one left with a full head of hair, which broke up X-Pac. HHH said he’d see everyone for Raw 2,000. Billy Gunn and Shawn Michaels disagreed about who would get to get their spot in next. HHH said they didn’t want Shawn to lose his smile and pose in Playgirl. Michaels responded that he needed the money. Gunn and Michaels were about to do it again when Damien Sandow interrupted.
Sandow belittled DX. Michaels said he would go to a church and beg for forgiveness. Sandow said he knew DX could kick his ass, but that would make him a martyr for everyone who appreciated a sophisticated mind. DX huddled to decide what to do. Michaels then gave Sandow sweet chin music and HHH gave him the pedigree. Gunn said if you’re not down with that, they have two words for you. This was a very fun segment. It was funny and you could tell everyone was having a blast.
Sheamus, Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio beat Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler and Chris Jericho. Jim Ross came out commentate for this match but then unfortunately left. The heels worked over Cara, who tagged Sheamus. Sheamus avoided attempts at the Walls and code breaker but Jericho avoided the Brogue kick. Ziggler then took a cheap shot on Jericho and Sheamus hit the Brogue kick on Jericho for the pin. Clearly, Chris Jericho vs. Dolph Ziggler is the next program and hopefully it helps take Ziggler to a higher level.
After the match, the announcers spoke with Charlie Sheen via Skype. He appeared a few times during the show, putting over the things that happened. Backstage, A.J. told Layla she doesn’t know why people call her mentally unstable when the whole place is nuts. She opened a door to Jim Duggan, Roddy Piper and R. Truth jumping rope with Truth’s imaginary friend, and Mae Young with a guy in a hand suit claiming to be Young’s grown up son. Michael Cole did the exaggerated fake laugh for the lame comedy.
Brodus Clay beat Jack Swagger immediately with a splash. Dude Love cornered Clay and danced with him after the match. They cut to backstage, where Trish Stratus was trying to talk HHH into yoga. HHH was bending over with Stratus behind him when DX came in. This appeared to be playing off a similar gag HHH and Stratus did years back, but they seemed reluctant to be overt with the gag.
The 9PM hour featured the A.J.-Daniel Bryan wedding. Slick was the reverend for the ceremony but didn’t get much of a reaction. The crowd chanted what at him and then no at Bryan and A.J. They both said yes, but A.J. said she wasn’t saying yes to Bryan but to someone else who made a proposal to her earlier in the night. Vince McMahon’s music hit but Vince said it wasn’t that kind of proposal. Vince said he made A.J. a business proposal and she is the new permanent GM of Raw. A.J. skipped around and left. This wasn’t the best of payoffs.
After a commercial break, Bryan was flipping out in the ring. CM Punk came out to make fun of Bryan and say that he’s still the best in the world. Bryan said not only is he better than Punk, but he is the greatest WWE superstar of all time. That brought out Rock. Rock said Bryan doesn’t get to say who the greatest of all time is because the people do. Bryan started to interrupt Rock. Rock stopped him and pointed out he won his first WWE title in St. Louis.
Rock said he wasn’t there to talk about Frodo (Bryan) but the title. Rock announced that he will challenge the WWE champion for the title at the Royal Rumble. This got a shockingly non-existent reaction and I don’t really have any explanation why. It’s smart that they announced this on a heavily viewed show to get people thinking about ordering the Rumble next year. Punk vowed to be champion at that point and beat Rock at the Rumble.
Bryan flipped out again and said this was supposed to be the greatest night of his life. He said he will be champion at Rumble and the face of WWE. Rock made fun of Bryan’s height some more, calling him an Oompa Loompa and Hobbit. Rock said he got Bryan a wedding gift and gave Bryan the rock bottom.
On the one hand, you could argue this segment elevated Bryan by having him interact with Rock and thus presenting him as someone important. On the other, you could argue Bryan was presented as a joke and mocked for his height. I guess I’m somewhere in between. I think they could build on this in a way to make Bryan more important but it also could end up more of a negative than a positive.
Bret Hart came out to introduce the Intercontinental title match. He mentioned that one of his greatest moments was winning the IC title from the great Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig. Miz then beat Christian to win the IC title. Miz avoided the kill switch but Christian hit a sunset flip off the second rope for two. Miz went after Christian’s leg. Christian went for the kill switch but Miz avoided it again. Miz went for the skull crushing finale but Christian avoided that and tried the kill switch a third title. Miz avoided it yet again and Christian landed gingerly on his leg. Miz then hit the skull crushing finale for the pin. Miz sold winning the title big, which was a nice touch.
The 10PM hour break featured the HHH-Brock Lesnar angle. HHH came to the ring. He said he wants to fight Lesnar at SummerSlam and wants his answer. Paul Heyman came out. HHH said he wanted to speak to the horse’s head, not the horse’s ass. Heyman said Lesnar’s answer is no. HHH threatened to go find Lesnar. Heyman said that would mean a third lawsuit against WWE. HHH suggested Lesnar is a coward. Heyman mocked HHH for name calling and asked if he teaches his kids to do that.
HHH knocked the microphone from Heyman’s hand and told Heyman not to talk about his kids. Heyman said he shouldn’t talk about them because the sins of the father will be visited upon the children. That brought out Stephanie McMahon. They openly acknowledged her as HHH’s wife and the mother of his children. Stephanie told Heyman not to speak about her kids. Stephanie said the lawsuits aren’t about Lesnar but Heyman’s business failings in WCW, ECW and WWE. Stephanie said compared to Vince, Heyman is in the rearview mirror. Where does that leave Stephanie? Stephanie added that at least Vince had the guts to wrestle HHH, which isn’t true of Lesnar.
Stephanie went further, saying that Heyman’s children are ashamed of him because their father is a professional parasite. She slapped Heyman. Heyman got mad and said Lesnar-HHH is on. Heyman realized he had been baited and said Stephanie always gets what she wants, just like Vince taught her and she teaches her children. Stephanie attacked Heyman. Brock Lesnar finally came out and fought HHH. HHH knocked Lesnar from the ring. I didn’t care for this angle. To me, HHH and Lesnar fighting is a perfectly effective direction and instead they’re building it through Stephanie vs. Heyman and lawsuits. Lesnar-HHH at SummerSlam just doesn’t seem like a big deal at all. Heyman was really great, though.
Lita beat Heath Slater. Howard Finkel introduced Slater. Slater challenged anyone to a no-DQ, no-COR match. Lita came out but said she brought protection. The APA joined her. Slater went to leave but all the legends Slater has fought brought him back to the ring. Lita hit a twist of fate on Slater. Bradshaw gave him a nasty clothesline from hell. Lita then gave him the moonsault for the win. Ron Simmons said damn. This was fun. Slater is perfect for this sort of foil role. There’s something annoying about him that makes it fun to see him get beat up and it isn’t like he has upper card potential.
Sean Mooney of all people interviewed Daniel Bryan backstage. Bryan was angry about the night’s events and complained. He was particularly angry at Charlie Sheen for making fun of him via Skype and said if Sheen were there he would put Sheen in the yes lock. Later, Sheen said he’d be happy to confront Bryan any time in Los Angeles. They teased an appearance by Sheen at SummerSlam, but it didn’t seem like they had a deal for that. I guess we’ll see.
John Cena, Zack Ryder and Gene Okerlund were talking backstage. Ryder thought Okerlund was behind GTV. Rock showed up and Okerlund left. Rock wished Cena good luck. Cena said he wanted another shot at Rock at the Rumble. Rock said he looks forward to that.
Kane came to the ring. He was interrupted by Jinder Mahal, Hunico, Camacho, Curt Hawkins, Tyler Reks and Drew McIntyre. Memo to WWE prelim guys: don’t band together to rise up against main event talent. I’ve seen this one before and it always ends so poorly for you. Mahal said they haven’t been given chances and now they are taking one. They surrounded the ring to attack Kane when Undertaker’s music hit. Undertaker and Kane laid out the other six. They did a double throat slash and double tombstone on Hawkins and Hunico. There was a weird delay for a while, they finally rolled Hawkins and Hunico out of the ring, and they posed together.
In an interesting bit, they asked people on Twitter whether they’d rather see Rock-Cena, Rock-Punk or Rock-Big Show at Rumble. Rock-Punk won handily. I don’t take a Twitter survey to mean much of anything, but I would have expected Rock-Cena to win big and it lost decisively 55-35 (with 10 percent for Show). Rock-Punk interests me more too but Rock-Cena is probably a bigger PPV draw. They’ll probably do one at Mania and the other at the Rumble anyway. Maybe Rock-Punk at Rumble and Rock-Cena plus Punk-Austin at Mania.
John Cena beat CM Punk via DQ. There was a long mat wrestling sequence early. Punk set up for the GTS but Cena shoved Punk into the referee. Cena hit the FU and covered, but there was no referee. Big Show came out and speared Cena. Show then set up for the KO punch with Punk sitting in the corner watching. This was subtle at first, as you could see Punk was conscious and aware of what was going on but wasn’t doing anything. But he was just sort of watching without any facial expression selling what was going on. He let Show hit the KO punch on Cena and Show then left.
At this point, Punk got up and was left with the decision of what to do. He seemed conflicted and seemed to be going back and forth in his head about whether to take advantage of the situation. Punk revived the referee while still seeming torn. Finally, Punk made the decision to go for the pin. He covered Cena, but Cena kicked out. Punk then went for the GTS but Cena reversed into the STF. Show came out and attacked Cena for the DQ.
Show continued beating up Cena after the bell as Punk just watched. Punk finally decided to turn his back and leave. At that point, Rock ran out for the save. Rock went after Show and hit a spine buster. He went for the people’s elbow but Punk ran back in and cut off Rock with a clothesline. Punk looked at his hands intently and then gave Rock the GTS to close the show.
This was a phenomenal heel turn. I’m not sure yet whether this story is a money direction, but Punk was so awesome doing this. Even more so, the writers really deserve credit here. This was just a wonderfully told story, with a man confronted with a tricky moral decision and showing his true character by making the easy wrong move rather than the more difficult right move. He wasn’t a cartoonish villain just being bad for the sake of bad either; he recognized that he was doing the wrong thing but retaining the title meant too much to him to resist. That story is enhanced by the fact Punk has often sermonized over the years in a self-righteous manner, only to have done the wrong thing when the chips were down. It’s one of the better heel turns WWE has ever done, and Punk is better as a heel than a face anyway.
Final Thoughts:
As expected, this was a fun show. It’s hard to bring back all the stars they did and not have it be entertaining. I thought the show was good but kind of underwhelming going into the final segment, but the CM Punk heel turn was a memorable and very well executed finale that elevated the rest of the show.
And that will do it for these reports. It’s really amazing to me how many doors opened up on the writing front since Dave asked me to write more for the Observer website so many years ago. Thanks first and foremost to Dave for the opportunity and more so just for putting out such a phenomenal product that I’ve been reading well over half my life now. My primary motivation for starting to write about wrestling was a simple desire to be associated in some way with Dave.
Thanks also to Bryan for bringing me on board and being so supportive over the years. If it hadn’t been for that support, I would have stopped a long time ago. He’s one of the most genuinely good people I’ve ever known.
Special thanks to Houston Mitchell, who was more supportive than anyone and so important in opening doors for me.
Thanks very much to everyone for reading over the last decade or so and to everyone who has written over the years to say positive things. I appreciate the support.
And finally, thanks to WWE for producing a show that has presented so many great moments over the years. It’s no secret that I have a lot of problems with the current direction of WWE. The years I’ve been writing about the show have coincided with what in my opinion has been a downturn in the quality of the show. But nobody would care about that downturn if it weren’t for the years of goodwill WWE had built with its core audience. Long term fans that have stuck around to this point badly want to like the product and there’s another large group of people that monitor the product on the outside, hoping to hear things have gotten better and it’s worth diving back in. Hopefully sooner rather than later WWE can reengage those fans with an exciting and improved product.

Jorge Masvidal tabbed to take on Pat Healy at Strikeforce event in January

http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2012/11/...nt-in-january/

When Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez pulled out of a January 12 bout with Pat Healy due to injury, questions began springing up regarding whether the organization planned to find a replacement for “El Nino” or would instead look at cancelling the card as they did in September under similar circumstances. Fortunately, it appears Strikeforce is going with the first option.

Though not officially announced, MMAJunkie is reporting that Jorge Masvidal will slide into the vacancy created by Melendez’s withdrawal, citing “sources close to the event”. It is unknown where the bout will be placed on the show’s lineup though it seems likely to make the main broadcast.

The 23-7 Masvidal has won three of his last four fights including victories over Justin Wilcox and K.J. Noons. He has also notched past success against the likes of Billy Evangelista, Yves Edwards, and Joe Lauzon.

Healy (28-16) has come out with his hand raised in five straight fights. He was last seen outpointing Mizuto Hirota in July.

A previously reported bout between Gegard Mousasi and Mike Kyle has now been confirmed by the promotion, with a lightweight tilt between KJ Noons and Ryan Couture being added to the card. Strikeforce added the bouts to the card on Wednesday.

Strikeforce also confirmed the rumored removal of lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and middleweight champion Luke Rockhold after removing them from their official lineup.

Ryan Couture – son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture – has quietly become a solid prospect in the lightweight division. Couture (6-1 MMA, 5-1 SF) has won his last three fights, last defeating Joe Duarte at “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy.” KJ Noons (11-5 MMA, 3-3 SF) is likely battling for a slot in the UFC after dropping three of his last four fights.

The January event will take place at the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The arena was the original site for “Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir” before the event was canceled prior to the November show. The card will be headlined by welterweight champion Nate Marquardt facing Tarec Saffiedine and Strikeforce Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier taking on Dion Staring.

Fight Card:

  • Strikeforce Welterweight Title Fight: Nate Marquardt (c) vs. Tarec Saffiedine
  • Danial Cormier vs. Dion Staring
  • Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle
  • Pat Healy vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • Ryan Couture vs. KJ Noons

Magnus Cedenblad vs Rafael Natal Added to UFC on Fox 6

A middleweight bout between Michael Cedenblad and Rafael Natal has been booked for UFC on Fox 6, which takes place at the United Center in Chicago on January 26.

Cedenblad (10-4) came into the UFC riding a seven-fight win-streak. Unfortunately for the Swede, his run came to an end when he met Francis Carmont at UFC on Fuel TV 2, as “Limitless” scored a rear-naked choke in the second period, forcing “Jycken” to tap. Cedenblad now looks to get his first victory inside the octagon at the expense of Natal.

“Sapo” (14-4-1) is 2-2-1 inside the UFC, most recently having a two-fight run snapped by Andrew Craig in July. In an all out war, Craig was able to knockout the Brazilian in the second round after handily dropping the first. Natal has taken victories over Michael Kuiper and Paul Bradley during his promotional tenure.

UFC on Fox 6 is headlined by the first defense of the newly minted flyweight championship, as Demetrious Johnson looks to hold on to the strap against the surging John Dodson.

How to help Dennis Hallman’s family after devastating house fire

As we mentioned last week, former UFC fighter Dennis Hallman lost his home the night before Thanksgiving to a fire. Luckily, no one was home and no one was injured in the fire that took six hours to put out. The MMA community has responded to help Hallman and his four children rebuild.

Fighter Benji Radach has put together a fund to help Hallman rebuild. 113 people have already donated to get the total over $10,000. To donate, click here. People have already contributed amounts ranging from $5 to $500.

Hallman has been fighting since 1996, and he told Sports Illustrated that the worst things he lost in the fire were irreplaceable items like pictures of his family and programs from his fights.

"That's the stuff that makes you want to cry when you think about it. At first, I was angry about it, but sitting there with my sons around me, I thought, I can't take any of that stuff with me to the grave," said Hallman.

Bellator to implement a title fight rematch clause in 2013

bellator logo Bellator to implement a title fight rematch clause in 2013There are changes coming to the Bellator Fighting Championships for the new year.

Bellator will not only have a new home on television as they make the move to Spike TV but they will also “implement a championship fight rematch clause” in 2013. On Monday, Bellator Chariman and CEO Bjorn Rebney posted the announcement on the promotion’s website in a letter to MMA fans.

Bellator’s founding philosophy is that they are an MMA organization “Where Title Shots Are Earned, Not Given”. Their eight-man tournaments provide the winner an opportunity to fight for a championship belt. This clearly defined road to a title shot is a welcome change in comparison to other organizations. Now according to Rebney, “When a fighter’s earned a shot at the world title by winning The Toughest Tournament in Sports and competes in a title fight that knocks fans like us back in our seats (win or lose) delivering an incredible fight, when a rematch is called for, we will deliver it.”

This is definitely a win for fight fans. The Bellator Season 7 tournaments will be wrapping up over the next few weeks so we can look forward to some exciting title fights (and rematches) next year.

Dan Hardy Says Fight with Diego Sanchez Would Be Great

10_Hardy_Sadollah_11

Some fighters are nothing but business in the Octagon. From the judges instructions to getting their hands raised, such competitors hardly crack a smile or enjoy the opportunity they’ve been given. However, UFC welterweight Dan Hardy isn’t one of those people. Hardy is typically a focused fighter in the cage during a fight, but he is no stranger to playing along while Bruce Buffer announces his name or catering to the crowd.

And, though the Brit understands he is in no position to be asking for any particular opponent and has to win a few more fights until he can call guys out, Hardy recently said it was a shame Diego Sanchez was moving back down to 155 pounds because he thinks it would feel like a circus to fight him.

He told ESPN:

“Diego Sanchez would be great. The guy’s hilarious, I can’t take him seriously. I think a fight with him would be a lot of fun, why not?!”

When Hardy was asked out Sanchez’s famous ‘YES!’ mantra:

“I’ll be doubled-up from laughter if he’s doing that! Especially if he comes out to the Mariachi music – because that’s just fantastic. It’s like a circus, like a festival!”

As for Hardy’s future:

“I have a rough schedule in my head of when I’m going to fight next, which the UFC usually throw out the window so it doesn’t make a great deal of difference anyway. I’m looking at the end of March, beginning of April. I don’t want to slip back into the habit of taking fights just to fight. I’m making improvements now.”

DREAM 18 – “GLORY 4 NYE” Targeting Phil Baroni vs Hayato Sakurai

Phil BaroniA welterweight battle of UFC and Pride veterans Phil Baorni and Hayato Sakurai has been added to DREAM and Glory’s co-promotional New Year’s Eve event.

Baroni (15-15), recently snapped a two-fight skid with a vicious soccer kick knockout victory over Rodrigo Ribeiro at One FC 5 in August. “The New York Badass” was previously slated to meet with Pancrase welterweight champion Takenaroi Sato at Glory 4, but has opted to move to the New Year’s Event, which is traditionally the biggest fight night in Japan.

Sakurai (36-12) has been somewhat inactive over recent years, fighting only three times since the start of 2010. “Mach” last competed at last year’s DREAM NYE event, taking a unanimous decision over Ryo Chonan, snapping a four-fight fall from grace.

Baroni and Sakurai join such fighters as Tatsuya Kawajiri, Hiroyuki Takaya, Satoru Kitaoka, and Shinya Aoki on the evening’s billing. Also slated take place at the Saitama Super Arena on December 31 is the Glory Grand Slam Tournament, which features the likes of heavyweight kickboxers like Semmy Schilt, Remy Bonjasky, and Daniel Ghita.

UFC’s Super Bowl Card May Move to Fox in 2014

UFC on FoxThe UFC may lose their annual Super Bowl weekend pay-per-view in 2014 if their broadcast partner, Fox, gets their wish. The network – which will air Super Bowl XLVIII – would like to connect the two events for next year’s Super Bowl weekend. The move would still pit the UFC on Saturday, just on Fox.

MMAJunkie reported the news earlier today citing comments from Fox President Eric Shanks, who stated he was working hard to convince UFC President Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta to make the move.

Said Shanks:

“We think that Super Bowl week in New York is going to be unlike anything else, and … we’re going to own that week of sports television,” he said. “There’s nothing better than we can think of than a big fight that week.”

The UFC has traditionally planned their bigger match-ups for Super Bowl weekend every year since 2005. This year’s event – UFC 156 – will likely feature the usual Fox programming to start off the evening before the card moves over to PPV.

DraMMA Report: When Joe Rogan Gets it Wrong

joe-rogan

The internet is buzzing over an outdated, homophobic low blow of a joke Joe Rogan made during the UFC 154 broadcast fight between Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks. Did you really want me to reference it? Fine but it’s really lame.

And I quote:

“Martin Kampmann comes from behind more often than Lance Bass.” – Joe Rogan

I get the reference but it’s pure potty humor right? I bet the new age of MMA fans who were born after 1992 wouldn’t even know who Bass is, but hey Rogan’s a comedian so he has to get his jabs in where he can. What impresses me most about the chatter online is that people are disappointed in the seemingly classless comments made on a nationally televised broadcast – where his words could have cost him a piece of the audience by offending gays, modern families and people who believe in civil rights. While this is paces away from bullying it’s really nice to know the online community is stepping up and rallying to let Joe know what he said was not impressive. To top it, Rogan went out of his way to call one ref fat, and that he’s surprised his weight doesn’t get in the way of his job. That seems like a good way to try and win over casual fans.

Here are some of the best comments I’ve found on the internet that blasts Joe for his humor and performance…

“It wasn’t even that it was offensive…

He didn’t say or imply anything negative…It just wasn’t funny. When comedians reach that far for a joke it usually doesn’t work. Does anyone even talk about Lance Bass anymore???”

by Op_of_Faith on Nov 18, 2012 12:33 PM EST

“This seems to have become at theme at recent UFCs.

Happily the commentary wouldn’t play on my stream, so I got crowd noise and ring mics and blissful silence from the commentary booth.

“Sit still. Stop thinking. Shut up. Get out!”

by VenusBlue on Nov 18, 2012 9:40 AM EST

“I just see it as one of those things that simply isn’t good for business. Alienate gay fans / parents of younger children. From a cost-benefit perspective, the joke added very little to broadcast and could have cost viewers and fans.

With all of that being said, I found it to be a funny joke – just not fitting for the moment.”

Chris Weidman Injured, Out Of UFC 155 Bout Against Tim Boetsch, Philippou In

http://www.bjpenn.com/chris-weidman-...+NEWS+BLOGS%29

In a report first released by Long Island’s “Newsday.com”, UFC middleweight contender Chris Weidman has been reported as injured and out of his scheduled UFC 155 bout against Tim Boetsch.

UFC officials later confirmed the news through their official twitter channel.

The report reads:

Long Island’s Chris Weidman, one of the top UFC middleweight fighters, is out of UFC 155 next month with an undisclosed injury, Newsday has learned.

He was scheduled to fight Tim Boetsch on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

“It’s awful,” trainer Ray Longo said.

Instead, Boetsch will fight Costa Philippou, a teammate of Weidman’s with Longo and Matt Serra. Philippou was supposed to fight this past Saturday against Nick Ring at UFC 154 in Montreal, but the bout was canceled that morning when Ring fell ill.

Jorge Masvidal Steps In for Gilbert Melendez Against Pat Healy

jorgemasvidal

It sounds like the rumor/ guessing game is over as too who will be in the cage at the last Strikeforce show against Pat Healy. It was announced late last week that Gilbert Melendez was out of the bout with a shoulder injury, and one of the rumored front runners was Jorge Masvidal. Turns  out the rumors are true, and it will be Masvidal across the canvas from Healy when the bell sounds on January 12th. Masvidal is 23-7 as a pro fighter and is coming off off a split decision win over Justin Wilcox in July of 2012.

MMAWeekly confirmed the bout:

With Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez still sidelined by a shoulder injury, Jorge Masvidal has been tapped to face Pat Healy at Strikeforce: Champions in January. Sources close to the match-up confirmed that verbal agreements are in place for the lightweight contest headed to Oklahoma City on Jan 12.

Greg Valentine Posts Explanation For No-Showing Event

WWE Hall of Famer Greg “The Hammer” Valentine offered an explanation on his Facebook page for no-showing Great North Wrestling’s Randy Savage tribute show on Sept. 3 in Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada after the organization paid $2,000 for his services.

Here is my Official Statement on my Canada Booking. I hope this clears things up.

I was booked for the Macho Man Memorial Show in Canada. That’s true. I told the promoter I was coming. That’s true. I received my deposit from the promoter. That’s true. Now let me clear some things up…

A few days before the scheduled booking, my mother-n-law had to go into the hospital for an emergency surgery. I sent my wife, Julie, to Nashville to be by her side. I stayed back in Tampa to continue with my weekend booking schedule. I called the promoter when I saw my flight itinerary. He had me on a 715 flight to Miami from Tampa, then Miami to Chicago, then Chicago to Ottawa, then a couple hour drive to the show, plus going thru customs when I land…which can take an hour for me to get thru.

When I saw this, I called the promoter and left the message that many of you heard. I asked for the remainder of the money if I was going to be jumping on THREE different airplanes to get to this event. And yes, I promised him I would be there. Now what you need to understand is this… My message to him was stern. I was angry. My wife was a bundle of nerves because she is seeing her mother suffer. I was not with her, and I now have a flight schedule that is beyond crazy. Last time I went there I didn’t need to go on THREE planes to get there. So, with all that being said, I was stressed out, and I do apologize to the fans who heard the voice mail that I left. The pressure got the best of me and I used language I shouldn’t have. We all make mistakes.

This is what then unfolded as the reason I did not show up… The promoter sent me the remainder of the money as I asked. I was going to his booking as I promised him…even though I was under a lot of pressure with what has been going on with my mother-n-law (something that the promoter knew about). The morning of the booking came, I was still going. I then got a call from my wife in Nashville that her mom was given 2 days to live. That did it for me. How can I, as a husband, NOT be with my wife and mother-n-law, and the rest of the family? What would you do? If you were a son or daughter of adult age, and had a vacation scheduled, but your Mom or Dad was given two days to live…would you still go away on your vacation, or put things in priority order, and be with your family?

As I write this to you, I am with the family in Nashville, filling my days with my wife and the rest of the family at my mother-n-law’s bedside. It’s been 2 days already and she is still with us, but I attribute that to the many fans and friends who have been praying for her. I have received numerous emails expressing your concern and support in my situation.

If the promoter is angry, and out to try and hurt my reputation, shame on him. I called him and apologized for not being able to come, and TOLD HIM I was not going to make it because of the news we got from the hospital the morning of the show… that her death was expected. I even went as far to tell him that I would return the money he sent…all of it, and I STILL stand by it. When I return to Tampa, I will be heading to my bank and mailing him the money. This was never the issue, so why he had to go off and try to hurt me at a time where we are having a tragedy in our family, I don’t know.

What tends to hurt me the most, is that I asked him to please tell the fans that I was sorry and that i was not going to be able to make it to the event. I purposely made sure that he would express that to the fans who came out to see me, and to celebrate the life of Randy Savage. Instead, he tells everyone that I pulled a “No show”. He didn’t give any reason for my absence, just told people I didn’t show up. This is not how I operate. However, when push comes to shove with family, family will always win out.

That is the truth. This is what happened. Yes, I did not like the flight itinerary, and I did ask him for the balance of my payoff, but that had nothing to do with me not being there. It was getting the news that my mother-n-law was about to die that caused me to decide not to go the day of. As stated earlier, my mother-n-law seems to be doing better, and I thank you all for praying. I believe that is the only reason why. For those that got offended, I do apologize, and I do hope to see you again one day soon. Thank you for your support throughout this time, and for being such dedicated fans and friends.
