UFC welterweight Johny Hendricks knows he’s nowhere near the top of MMA’s “pound-for-pound” list. He also understands he would be an underdog if matched up against 170 pound champion Georges St-Pierre. However, regardless of what others may think, Hendricks is confident he is just as likely to defeat St-Pierre as middleweight Anderson Silva and is ready to prove it.
“I’m not as good as Anderson Silva, but I believe I have what it takes to beat GSP,” said Hendricks to MMAFightCorner. “I’ve been wrestling since I was five, and they say that’s what GSP is the strongest at. And, also I have knockout power. I can lay anybody out at any given moment.”
“I’ve wrestled all my life and if I really wanted to I could go into a fight and take him down,” he continued, again touching on his ,mat-based prowess in comparison to St-Pierre’s. “I just haven’t had the thrill of wanting to take somebody down. For some reason, just hitting someone in the face is a lot more exciting to me, and also to the crowd.”
The UFC has been intent on booking St-Pierre against Silva, the organization’s middleweight champ and one of the greatest fighters the sport has ever seen. GSP has remained non-committal about the clash, possibly opening the door for Hendricks to slide in and get the title-shot he definitely deserves.
The 14-1 Hendricks has won five fights in a row including victories over Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and most recently Martin Kampmann.
