The internet is buzzing over an outdated, homophobic low blow of a joke Joe Rogan made during the UFC 154 broadcast fight between Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks. Did you really want me to reference it? Fine but it’s really lame.
And I quote:
“Martin Kampmann comes from behind more often than Lance Bass.” – Joe Rogan
I get the reference but it’s pure potty humor right? I bet the new age of MMA fans who were born after 1992 wouldn’t even know who Bass is, but hey Rogan’s a comedian so he has to get his jabs in where he can. What impresses me most about the chatter online is that people are disappointed in the seemingly classless comments made on a nationally televised broadcast – where his words could have cost him a piece of the audience by offending gays, modern families and people who believe in civil rights. While this is paces away from bullying it’s really nice to know the online community is stepping up and rallying to let Joe know what he said was not impressive. To top it, Rogan went out of his way to call one ref fat, and that he’s surprised his weight doesn’t get in the way of his job. That seems like a good way to try and win over casual fans.

He didn’t say or imply anything negative…It just wasn’t funny. When comedians reach that far for a joke it usually doesn’t work. Does anyone even talk about Lance Bass anymore???”

Happily the commentary wouldn’t play on my stream, so I got crowd noise and ring mics and blissful silence from the commentary booth.

“I just see it as one of those things that simply isn’t good for business. Alienate gay fans / parents of younger children. From a cost-benefit perspective, the joke added very little to broadcast and could have cost viewers and fans.
With all of that being said, I found it to be a funny joke – just not fitting for the moment.”
