A pair of fights have been made official for Strikeforce’s January 12 card. A previously reported bout between Gegard Mousasi and Mike Kyle has now been confirmed by the promotion, with a lightweight tilt between KJ Noons and Ryan Couture being added to the card. Strikeforce added the bouts to the card on Wednesday.
Strikeforce also confirmed the rumored removal of lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and middleweight champion Luke Rockhold after removing them from their official lineup.
Ryan Couture – son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture – has quietly become a solid prospect in the lightweight division. Couture (6-1 MMA, 5-1 SF) has won his last three fights, last defeating Joe Duarte at “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy.” KJ Noons (11-5 MMA, 3-3 SF) is likely battling for a slot in the UFC after dropping three of his last four fights.
The January event will take place at the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The arena was the original site for “Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir” before the event was canceled prior to the November show. The card will be headlined by welterweight champion Nate Marquardt facing Tarec Saffiedine and Strikeforce Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier taking on Dion Staring.
