"This is a good or bad news. I just got a check in the mail from UFC, and I would like to share with friends and fans that for the fourth time, even getting my ass whooped like I had last fight, the UFC sent me more money than I would get if I had won the fights. Thanks Dana [White], Lorenzo [Fertitta], Joe Silva."

-Fabio Maldonado took to his Facebook page this weekend, revealing that the UFC has paid him above and beyond what he's been contracted to be paid.

Penick's Analysis: When Dana White says that we don't know how much the fighters are being paid, for the most part it's a correct statement. They do often go above and beyond what they're contractually obligated to pay, but that's not always the case. If you're not in their favor, if you have a poor fight, or if you simply don't perform the way they expect, that bonus check may not be coming. It's a very uncertain environment when it comes to pay, but when it happens the way Maldonado has experienced, it's certainly a pleasant surprise. Ultimately, the fighters are responsible for signing the contracts that they sign, so if they agree to a certain amount that's all they can expect, and if the UFC goes above that, great for them. But it doesn't happen with every fighter in every fight.
