Former UFC and Bellator Fighter Sherman Pendergarst Loses Cancer Battle

Former UFC and Bellator heavyweight Sherman Pendergarst has passed away after a two-year battle with colon and rectal cancer. He was 45.

Pendergarst’s condition took a turn for the worse over the last few months with his coach, Pat Miletich, tweeting that Pendergarst was being moved into hospice on Thursday. Miletich tweeted on Friday that Pendergarst had succumbed to his illness, stating:

“Sherman Pendergarst passed away from his battle with cancer. Anyone who knew his spirit knows it’s traveling north now. Love ya buddy. The world judges us on accomplishements, but God judges us on love. Sherman was right with the man.”

While never a champion or household name, Pendergarst was a man who truly loved MMA and was willing to take on anyone.

Pendergarst refused to let his cancer battle stop his career, as he fought during treatment. He would continue training until his body as simply unable to go any more due to the toll of chemotherapy. While this angered his teammates and coaches, he fought on. The MFS-based fighter apparently hid his condition from the last state he fought in (North Dakota) in order to fight.

Pendergarst was always well-regarded by his peers, despite being stubborn, and will be missed greatly by those who had the pleasure of meeting him.
