Urijah Faber was unsuccessful in attempting to claim a UFC championship Saturday night, falling in a bout for the interim bantamweight title to Renan Barao at UFC 149. Faber, a former champion in the now-defunct WEC, was also denied the belt last year when he lost to current champion Dominick Cruz.
With Barao and Cruz expected to face off and unify the titles next year, some fans are wondering if “The California Kid” is looking at changing weight-classes in hopes of another run at a UFC belt.
“No way,” said Faber during the post-fight press conference. “I put on 18 pounds (Friday after weigh-ins), and I would probably not be here if I was trying to get to 125. No, 135 is where I’ll be.”
Part of that likely has to do with the fact that fellow Team Alpha Male fighter Joseph Benavidez is set to compete for the first-ever UFC flyweight title at UFC 152 against Demetrious Johnson.
Faber has lost each of his last five championship matches, losing to Barao, Cruz, Jose Aldo and Mike Brown (twice).
