At the tail end of what has been a huge week for One FC, who picked up both Bibiano Fernandes and Shinya Aoki, it would appear that there is little sign of slowing down for the young promotion when it comes to bringing new talent to the company cage. Recent reports suggest that ultra-popular Japanese veteran Tatsuya Kawajiri may be headed to One FC.
While pen as not met paper, sources close to the situation insist that Kawajiri is in “very deep negotiations” with the company based out of Singapore and should sign “very soon”.
One of the most prominent figures in Japanese MMA for years, Kawajiri spent much of his career at lightweight, taking on the likes Eddie Alvarez, Shinya Aoki, Takanori Gomi, Josh Thomson, JZ Cavalcante, and Gilbert Melendez.
It was a gut-wrenching loss to Melendez in a Strikeforce Championship bout that would send Kawajiri to the featherweight division, where he currently resides. Now 3-0 as a 145 lb fighter, “Crusher” has shown that his skills match-up very well with the division. Kawajiri’s run has seen him finish his two final DREAM bouts against perennial top competitors Joachim Hansen and Kazuyuki Miyata by arm-triangle choke. His most recent outing was a one-off appearance at One FC 3 in March, where he submitted Donald Sanchez via first round triangle choke.
When and if Kawajiri will join One FC’s featherweight division remains to be seen, but the Japanese fighter brings with him a loyal following which are sure to take note of the young promotion.
