When Sarah Kaufman takes to the cage on August 18 to face unbeaten grappler Ronda Rousey for the Strikeforce bantamweight title she’ll know what to expect against the unbeaten champion. All of Rousey’s victories have involved a first-frame Armbar resulting from the ground skills she honed as an Olympic medaling Judoka.
As such, Kaufman will be looking to make Rousey extremely uncomfortable and plans to do so by putting her under more pressure while standing than has been the case in any of Rousey’s other outings.
“Ronda hasn’t been in the sport very long, so she hasn’t developed that side of her game yet and is really relying solely on her judo at this point,” explained Kaufman in an interview with MMAJunkie. “She’s a good athlete; you can look at her and see that. She moves well, and with her judo she’s done well. I think it’s going to take a while before she has any ground to stand on as far as the striking.”
Kaufman Wants to Be Known for Fighting, Nothing Else
“Ronda hasn’t fought someone like me yet. It’s going to be a shock for her,” the 15-1 Canadian continued. “I definitely want to test her chin, for sure.”
Kaufman’s only loss, ironically, involved an Armbar though ten of her wins have come by way of a strike-based stoppage.
