The UFC took over the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California for UFC on Fuel TV 4 on Wednesday night. After a night filled with the action and violence that fans crave, seven fighters who competed at the event now find themselves forced to the sidelines with medical suspensions, the worst of which were received by Mark Munoz and James Te Huna.
Munoz, who competed in the evening’s main event against Chris Weidman, found himself on the wrong end of a breakthrough performance by the Serra-Longo protege. After being dominated by the Hofstra alumni in the opening round of their middleweight bout, “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” was clipped with a vicious elbow early in the second, knocking him out cold. Unfortunately for Munoz, referee Josh Rosenthal was not in a generous mood, allowing Weidman to continually pound the Reign MMA product long after he was unconscious. Munoz now finds himself on the shelf for 180 days due to left scalp and right eyebrow lacerations as well as a possibly fractured jaw, unless cleared by a physician first.
Te Huna took home a unanimous decision victory over Joey Beltran in their light heavyweight bout. Both men traded for the better part of 15 minutes with the Kiwi getting the better of the exchanges. While the heavy-handed New Zealander had his hand raised after the all out war, it came at a cost. Te Huna is now suspended for 180 days with possible fractures to both his left elbow and left foot. The Elite Fight Gym product must also undergo an MRI before September 11 to be cleared to compete once again.
