After watching Chael Sonnen leapfrog them for a title fight against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones with his gift of gab, it appears former top contenders Dan Henderson (Pictured) and Lyoto Machida will now collide at UFC 156.
Although neither party has put pen to paper, Henderson announced on this week’s edition of Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored Live that his next assignment will likely be “The Dragon” on Super Bowl Saturday.
“I can tell you what I know. I was told that it should be Super Bowl weekend, February 2nd, but who knows? Until it’s a done deal, I’ve been told things before that didn’t necessarily come true,” Henderson stated.
Henderson was slated to challenge Jones for his throne at UFC 151 until a knee injury forced him out at the 11th hour. With time running out and little choices available, the UFC was forced to cancel their first event since taking over the reins in 2001.
Speaking of substitutes not prepared to step up, when the promotion decided to push Jones’ next title defense back to UFC 152, Machida was offered the bout but felt one month wasn’t enough time to prepare for his rematch with “Bones.”
The Brazilian had earned next dibs when he put Ryan Bader to sleep at UFC on FOX 4, though promptly lost his place in line after declining to face Jones in Toronto.
UFC 156 takes place inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 205-pounders will likely serve as the show’s co-featured attraction should this scrap come to fruition.
A featherweight title tile between champ Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar headlines the gig.
