Eddie Alvarez: “I want to test myself against anyone who is (ranked) ahead of me.”

Lightweight Eddie Alvarez has beaten a number of notable opponents in his career including the likes of Josh Neer, Roger Huerta, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Shinya Aoki. However, he has never had an opportunity to prove how great he truly is based on the bulk of the division’s elite competitors residing in the UFC.

The longtime Bellator star will have a chance to change that in the immediate future now that his contract with the organization has ended. Alvarez was recently asked about his current status where he confirmed Bellator had granted him an early release from a stipulation preventing him from exploring free agency for a few months, as well as made his position clear in terms of what he’s looking for in a new promotional home.

“We’re going to try and move it along as fast as possible for myself and for Bellator. So we’ll see. Nothing’s set in stone. I’m just waiting to see what happens,” said Alvarez in a conversation with MMAInterviews.

Alvarez Says Staying with Bellator is Still an Option

Alvarez remained tight-lipped when pressed on whether or not he was meeting with the UFC while in Las Vegas supporting teammates at WSOF 1, offering a nervous laugh in response and saying, “Maybe.”

The 24-3 Alvarez was much more vocal in terms of his goal as a fighter, perhaps hinting as to whether he was leaning towards re-signing with Bellator or joining the UFC.

“I want to test myself against anyone who is ahead of me. I don’t know what I’m ranked in the rankings right now but I know there are guys ahead of me, and whoever I can fight that’s ahead of me – to up my stock and prove my ability – they are the guys I’m looking to get after,” he stated.

Alvarez was last seen taking out Patricky Freire with a beautiful head-kick last month. The win was his second straight since falling to unbeaten Bellator champion Michael Chandler a little more than a year ago.
