Fabricio Werdum: “A Daniel Cormier Fight Was Never Offered”

Remember when Frank Mir was forced to  pull out of a Strikeforce bout with Daniel Cormier?  Although many rumors circulated that Fabricio Werdum would be stepping in to save the November 3 event for some time, the ill-fated card would be cancelled, the second cancellation by the promotion in the span of a month.

Werdum, who will be lending his coaching skills to the second season of The Ultimate Fighter’s Brazilian expansion, spoke to MMA Junkie today, clearing up the rumors about the fight that never was. ”It was a fight that was never offered,” Werdum said. “I went to the media and said that I would step up and save the event and go back to Strikeforce, but it wasn’t offered.”

The argument that Werdum was slated to coach on TUF would be completely invalid at this juncture as the former Strikeforce fighter had yet to be pegged for the position. The fact that “Vai Cavalo” very publicly offered to take the fight and yet Zuffa was unable to find a suitable replacement for Mir shows the very nature of their tenuous relationship with Strikeforce. Many feel that the cancellation of a second event in such a close proximity to the fallout of the Melendez vs. Healy lightweight bout served as a death knell for San Jose-based promotion. While Strikeforce has promised to make a gigantic return in 2013, the utter disregard shown for the promotion does not bode well for its future.
