After former middleweight champion Rich Franklin’s catchweight bout with Wanderlei Silva went so well, Franklin announced he would be returning to the division he once reigned over. Franklin is now slated to face Cung Le in the main event of the UFC’s first foray into China, but “Ace” isn’t sure he will ever be in the cage with title-holder Anderson Silva ever again despite hoping to eventually challenge for the belt again. For now, the only future fight Franklin is concerned with right now is his UFC on Fuel 6 main event bout with Le.
Franklin (29–6, 1nc) told MMAWeekly:
“I don’t believe the UFC, I don’t believe they’re going to give me a title fight after this. I believe there’s going to be another step in that process, and I don’t know who that would be, if it would be somebody like a (Michael) Bisping, or something like that, but winning a fight always puts you in the right direction…I still don’t think the UFC is interested in doing a Franklin/Silva 3.”
“I have to be motivated to beat Cung and that’s it. I have Cung on November 10th, and it doesn’t matter what comes after that, and it’s not important. What’s important right now is winning that fight because if I didn’t win that fight those opportunities aren’t going to come anyways. It doesn’t matter whether I’d be motivated by them or not.”
Franklin also said he could see a possible a fight happening with Michael Bisping. Bisping told ESPN that Franklin would be a fight he would love to have.
“I’ve always looked up to Rich Franklin, he’s an incredible fighter, he’s got incredible passion for the sport, we match up well in terms of a fight, and he’d be a tough fight. I’d like to fight him out of respect – he’s one of the all-time greats. I’ve got nothing but respect for Rich, he’s a fantastic fighter.”
