Shane Carwin out of TUF 16 Finale fight with Roy Nelson due to knee injury

The curse seemingly surrounding coaches of the Ultimate Fighter has struck again, as heavyweight Shane Carwin has been yanked from a headlining match-up with Roy Nelson at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale after a knee injury he suffered in late September failed to heal as expected. Counting TUF Brasil, the situation marks the third consecutive season of the reality franchise where a rumble between the respective team-heads was scratched for health-related reasons.

UFC President Dana White confirmed Carwin’s condition on Twitter, saying a replacement was currently being sought. Though specifics weren’t offered, Carwin’s manager told Fighters.com that his client wasn’t expected to undergo surgery but had partially torn his “PCL, LCL and popliteus.”

“The gut feeling is that he can recover without surgery if he rehabs it,” explained representative Jason Genet. “The initial steps are that Shane will start to rehab the knee tomorrow, and see a specialist later in the week. That’s all we really know, and we just have to see how it goes from there.”

Carwin is expecting to make his return to the ring by February.
