Thiago Silva survives second round to submit Stanislav Nedkov in the third

Thiago Silva and Stanislav Nedkov squared off in the co-main event at UFC Macao on Saturday morning and it produced the first finish of the night.  The two went back and forth for three rounds before Silva was able to get the submission win.

In the first frame, it was apparent that Nedkov didn’t want to stand on the outside and exchange with Silva, and he utilized the clinch to slow him down. From the clinch, Nedkov used knees to punish the legs of Silva, but it did little to slow down the brazilian. Silva was still the more active fighter, and did enough to win the round on 2 of the judges score cards.

The second round looked a lot like the first round, but in the closing minute of the round Nedkov landed an overhand right that dropped Silva. Nedkov swarmed on Silva, but the round ended before Nedkov could get the finish. In the third, Silva was obviously the fresher fighter, and after he landed a solid combination he shot in for the takedown and went right into mount. From their Silva framed up a head an arm choke, and forced Nedkov to tap.

With the win, Silva gets his first win since 2009 and moves to 15-3 (1nc). He also picked up the submission of the night bonus and $40k. This was Nedkov’s first loss of his career, and the Bulgarian fighter will leave China with a record of 12-1.
