UFC to announce changes to drug testing policies before 2013

For a long time the UFC took a ‘hands off’ approach to drug testing their athletes, and would routinely spit our rhetoric like ‘the commissions already do drug tests.’ In 2012, the UFC has come a long way. The UFC has instituted policies testing anyone who signs with the promotion and anyone who appears on The Ultimate Fighter, but critics scoffed at these policies because the fighter would always know when the test was coming. According to Marc Ratner, UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, the UFC is not done developing their drug testing policies, and they will be making announcements about them before the end of the year.

Ratner told MMAJunkie:

“We’re going to have a statement about random testing and more testing very soon,” he said. “We’re forming new policies. I’d say before (the) new year, we’ll have some more policies about drug testing.”

“We have to be more vigilant and the commissions have to be more vigilant,” Ratner said. “We want a level playing field, and we really do care about having the sport clean. We want the message out there that no matter where (fighters compete), there’s going to be testing.”
