With all the attention being paid to UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones’ recent actions and upcoming defense against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 it seems to have been forgotten that another title-fight will also be taking place on the same card. It also happens to be a match-up with historic implications, as flyweights Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez will face off for the right to be named the organization’s inaugural 125-pound champion.
Johnson recently offered up an assessment of Benavidez in an interview with the UFC where he made it clear he respects the Team Alpha Male staple but plans to take him to places he’s yet to see inside the cage.
“He’s a great fighter. He’s a killer. He goes out there to try and he tries finish opponents. He’s very methodical,” began Johnson before adding, “I’m gonna test everything about him – his heart, his chin, his cardio. How bad does he want it? I’m gonna find out.”
Johnson’s Flyweight Diet Not So Bad After All
The 16-2 Benavidez will enter the fight on a four-fight winning streak with his only career losses coming to bantamweight king Dominick Cruz. Likewise, Johnson’s most recent stumble came to Cruz as well, though he holds an overall record of 15-2-1 including victories over Miguel Torres and most recently Ian McCall.
