When heavyweight Junior dos Santos puts his UFC title on the line later this year against Cain Velasquez he’ll be facing a familiar foe, as the two fought in November 2011 where “Cigano” laid claim to the championship by stopping Velasquez with strikes in the opening round of action. Though Dos Santos doesn’t necessarily expect success to come so easily in the rematch, he is definitely aiming to finish Velasquez again even if it means tapping him out rather than scoring a TKO.
Dos Santos Praises Velasquez as the Division’s Most Challenging Opponent
“It’s a good fight and everybody expects a war even because when it comes to conditioning and preparation Cain Velasquez is one to look up to. I’m sure it’s going to be a good fight for all MMA fans. I hope I get (out of) there with the knockout again. That’s my main goal when I fight: knock my opponent out,” said Dos Santos in an interview with TATAME. “I guess he’s trying to take me down anyway he can and, since I prefer to stand-up, I’ll try to keep actions up and go for the knockout again. I’m very well prepared, training a lot of ground game too and who knows. If he takes me down maybe I can submit him. After all, I train jiu-jitsu a lot and, as a Brazilian, someday I’ll submit someone.”
Dos Santos holds an overall record of 15-1 with thirteen stoppages including two by way of submission. However, one of the two tap-outs involved strikes while the other came in the 27-year old’s second professional fight more than five years ago.
The bout between Velasquez and Dos Santos is expected to serve as the headliner on December 29 at UFC 155 in Las Vegas.
