Cesar Gracie nixes idea of potential fight between teammates Nate Diaz-Gilbert Melendez

Lightweights Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez might be two of the most talented 155ers in MMA but they’re also longtime friends and training partners. The duo cut their teeth together in California under the tutelage of Cesar Gracie and has been inseparable since, showing up with consistency to corner one another while providing a perfect example of true team unity.

However, Melendez is currently Strikeforce champion, while Diaz is set to compete for the UFC title in December. As such, a situation could eventually surface where Diaz and Melendez are expected to fight in order to determine the sport’s top lightweight. Then again, according to Gracie, such a match-up will never materialize no matter how much pressure there is to put it together.

“If Nate’s champ Gilbert won’t fight him. If Gilbert is champ Nate won’t fight him,” said Gracie in an interview with FightHub TV. “It’s like as long as you can hold on to that championship, it’s yours.”

“They’re not going to fight and that’s how we are,” concluded Gracie on his team’s approach to competition.

Melendez’s Manager Offers Update on Health

Diaz’s bout with UFC champ Benson Henderson is slated for December 8 at UFC on FOX 5. Meanwhile, Melendez is currently in the process of healing up from a shoulder injury but could be back in action by January.
